Term 2b, week 1

PE: RUGBY
This half term, the class are doing rugby in their PE lessons. We started by practicing running and scoring a try with the ball - it is harder than it looks!
Newcastle Upon Time
This week we continued our project linking back to our class visit to the Discovery Museum. It is connecting music with history and a musician is coming in to work with the class to write a song about the changes of children’s lives over history, focusing on our area. The children had a fantastic time with Bridie and are looking forward to the next session.
Science club week 1!
A group of pupils from year three have had the opportunity to go to science club at the Centre for Life this half term. Your child may have already been or will be going in another year if they have not gone yet. Each school is planting rhubarb seeds under different conditions to see the impact this will have upon the plants as they grow. The group then made some predictions about a rhubarb plant.

Greek week!

This week our learning focused on everything to do with Greece.

English: Fact-file
In English, the class used note taking and highlighting techniques to pick key information from a text. They used this information to create their own fact file all about Greece.
Reading: Postcards
For one of our reading sessions this week, the class had lots of different postcard examples to read. The focus in reading for this half term is to develop a Point Evidence Explain (PEE) paragraphs when analysing a text. You can see them using the different coloured pencils here to identify each part.
English: Postcards
Connecting to our reading session, the class then wrote their own postcard as if they were visiting Greece and they were writing home to a family member. They did this in their English books and then wrote it on a template postcard and got to draw a picture for the front!
Maths: Location and direction
In maths, we learnt about directions, using a compass and locational language. They began by using an atlas and identifying different countries in Europe. Then they compared the location of these countries to Greece. For example, the UK is north west of Greece.
Geography: Modern Day Greece
We ended the week by starting a discussion about the impact of tourism upon Greece. We thought about the positives and negatives that tourism can have on a country. Myself and Mr Gray pretended we were both business owners from a Greek island to provide different points of view. For example, I was a souvenir shop owner and Mr Gray was a fisherman. This helped give the children real world context to understand and develop their own point of view, we will continue this next week.
World Book Day!
Connecting to our Greek week theme, World Book Day in year 3 was all about Greece. You can see the different stations that the children each got to do. We had lots of different books to explore; from books and atlases about modern day Greece, to books about Ancient Greece and about Greek myths and legends. There was also a table with Greek recipes and recipe books as well as the opportunity for children to try some traditional Greek cuisine. Lots of them did and really enjoyed it! We also began to make predictions for our new class reader which is connected to ancient Greece. It was wonderful to have some parents able to attend and join in with our lesson.
