Meet Emma Stark, a trailblazer and inspiration as Vancouver Island's first black teacher. Let's honour her legacy and the countless contributions of black Canadians throughout history.

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy soon to be Valentine's day! This is a great opportunity to remind everyone about Pink Shirt Day coming up on February 28! Warm up your pink shirt on Valentine's Day so we can stand up against bullying together. Check out the short looping video.

Youth Climate Activism Award

The National Youth Climate Activism Award in Canada is now accepting applications from students under 20 years old! This prestigious recognition celebrates the passionate efforts of young Canadians who are making significant strides in the fight against climate change. If you or someone you know is under the age of 20 and has been actively involved in climate activism, please share this information. Applicants from any grade can make up a 5 minute video or write a short story to demonstrate their devotion about protecting the planet.

The award aims to acknowledge young activists' achievements, encourage youth engagement in societal issues, and highlight the importance of youth activism in driving positive change. Applications are accepted from February 14 until Earth Day, April 22, 2024.

Ready, Set, Learn

The next Ready, Set, Learn event in Nanaimo is on Wednesday, February 21 from 5-6:30 pm at Island Connect Ed. This free drop-in program is for families with children ages 3-5 years. Join us for pizza and play-based activities. Registration is not required.

Education Committee Meeting

At the Education Committee meeting on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, the committee received details about the McCreary Report, Functional Skills Intervention as well as the CHEQ Kindergarten survey. Secretary-Treasurer Mark Walsh provided an update on Bill 40 and the committee recommended the Board gather feedback from the Student Voice Circle on issues associated with cell phone limitations. Healthy Start to Learning

Families with children from newborn to eight years old are invited to the Healthy Start to Learning event in Ladysmith on Thursday, February 22, 2024. NLPS’ Early Years Team works with educators, childcare providers, and community partners to provide early learning opportunities for families and young children. Through partnerships, we strengthen the connection between home and school, including supporting the transition to Kindergarten. Drop by to see the many resources and supports available for families.

Nanaimo Minor Softball Registration

Registration is now open for the 2024 Nanaimo Minor Softball Association. Registration closes March 31, 2024 with the season beginning in early April. Nanaimo Softball is also looking for volunteer coaches. Are you interested in being a coach? Find out more.
