awards and recognition
It was a highly successful year for our School Choir! Supported by Miss MacLean our fabulous singers won the Regent Shopping Centre Christmas Choir Competition. An amazing achievement!
This year our parents and families were treated to two shows. Our first being the whole school Christmas Extravaganza where we were entertained by all things Christmas including jokes, songs and dancing. The second show in June was The Pirates Of The Curry Bean. This was absolutely outstanding and the pupils really showed how talented they all are. Thanks to all our families who supported us and came along to these events.
The Glee Club have also had a very successful year. Glee choir won the Christmas Song competition in December 2024. A brilliant achievement!
Our Eco Work has been recognised again this year and the Eco Committee, alongside Mrs Jones and Room 9, have been extremely busy! In February, we were the first school to participate in SLC’s Waste Warrior project to reduce food waste and promote healthy balanced diets. The pupils made posters, learnt about eating habits across the world and kept records of waste food in the canteen. Room 9 entered the Upstream Battle competition organised by Keep Scotland Beautiful and were shortlisted in the top 9, representatives attended a showcase in Arrochar in March where, despite not winning, were interviewed to be part of the Young Reporter competition, winning 2nd in the Video category. We welcomed representatives from Keep Scotland Beautiful who awarded us with a certificate for having achieved 10 Green Flags. In May, Newfield Primary School welcomed Dr Cherie Taylor-Patel from New Zealand. She had made contact with us through Keep Scotland Beautiful as she was seeking schools with Eco Flags to discuss sustainability. Last week we attended a virtual award ceremony and a celebration of achievements by Eco-Schools where Newfield was featured and praised for our continued efforts in promoting sustainability. A brilliantly successful year, well done!
We received our Reading School Gold Award at the start of the year which is recognition of all the brilliant work that the Reading Committee and Mrs Montgomery have been doing over the last few years to encourage reading for pleasure. They have been recommending books, reading at our assemblies and highlighting new titles to pupils as well as encouraging the local community to get involved in reading. Well done to everyone involved!
Our Attachment Ambassadors and Mrs Johnston have been working really hard this year on our Attachment Pledges and have been successful in achieving Pledge 1 and Pledge 2. A superb achievement and this demonstrates the great work that is going on at Newfield.
We have submitted our evidence to be reaccredited with our Sports Scotland Gold Award this year. Mrs Forsyth and the Sports Committee have been working extremely hard both this year and last year to ensure our high standards of Sporting opportunities are maintained and often exceeded. Last week we were notified that we had been AWARDED OUR GOLD AWARD!! Huge congratulations to everyone involved, a brilliant achievement.
Also this year, one of our P6 pupils won the Stonehouse Arts Trail Competition and was awarded their framed work for display in school. We also had three pupils who were successful in naming three Wind Turbines at Kypemuir Wind Farm, they got to go along and see the Wind turbines and even got to venture inside one!!
Pupils leading learning
Our pupils are the real stars of the school. They are involved in leading so much of the activities that take place at Newfield. P7 led Masterclasses take place on a Friday and provide all our pupils with a chance to learn new skills. Leadership groups allow pupils to make a real difference to the life of the school and these groups have led to positive change. Leadership groups include: Eco, Reading Schools, Attachment Ambassadors, Tech Team, Sports Committee, Outdoor Group and JRSO.
Pupils often lead assemblies, our youngest pupils recently led a Welcome Assembly for our new Primary 1 friends who will be joining us in August. The transition event also allowed our P6 pupils to meet their buddy for the new school session - an exciting time for everyone!
Afterschool and lunchtime clubs
Newfield Primary prides itself in providing a wide range of after school and lunchtime clubs. Run by staff and senior pupils, we ensure there is something for everyone and encourage all of our pupils to take part. This year we have had 16 adult led clubs and 11 children led clubs. This is over 250 sessions across the school year. 78% of all our pupils have taken part in a club, with some children enjoying up to 8 clubs over the year. I have listed them below: Athletics, Boys' Football, Girls' Football, Dance, Netball, P3 Multisports, Running, Badminton, STEM, A Book and A Biscuit, Art, Chess, Glee, Choir, School Show, Read with Parents, Dodgeball, Just Dance, Lego, P4 Athletics, P3 Football, P1 Multisport, Friendship Club, Coding and P1/2 Ball Games.
sports festivals and events
Girls' Football
Alongside weekly training, the girls have attended festivals across this year as well as the Davie Cooper Football Tournament in May. They have had good success this year and are showing good progress and almost made it to the Semi Final at the Davie Cooper. Miss Corke is really pleased with the attitude and sportsmanship. Well done everyone! Thank you to Miss McLaren who has also assisted in the both the girls' and boys' football.
Boys' Football
The boys team have also been working hard this year, with weekly training and festival participation. They also took part in the Davie Cooper Football Tournament in May and were very unlucky to not get through to the knockout section. At the recent Robert Wilson Tournament our team were placed fourth - a great achievement against some much bigger Primary Schools. A special mention to former pupil, Aaron Weir who has helped at the Friday training sessions. As well as Friday training, there has been some additional football sessions on a Tuesday this has allowed a large number of pupils to take part in football training this year. By Mr Rae's calculation he has taken 40 training sessions across the school year - a great achievement!
Sportshall Athletics/Track and Field
Our P6/7 pupils have attended the four Sportshall Athletic events at Larkhall Leisure Centre with the last event being the scoring final. Mrs Forsyth has been training the pupils hard this session and was very impressed with the effort and dedication shown at all the events. Three of our pupils managed to get through to the Track and Field final, with Oliver successfully winning a silver medal in the Javelin - well done!
Netball
Mrs Johnston has been leading the Netball training this year with a dedicated group of senior pupils. They have shown great sportsmanship and effort during the festivals and have been complimented on their behaviour and conduct - well done everyone!
We also have some great swimmers in our P7 class and they have had a successful year and represented Newfield at the Swimming Gala earlier in the year. What a talented bunch of pupils we have!
school trips, events and days out
The Pupil Equity Funding the school received paid for the school trips this year, meaning that all pupils enjoyed a school trip absolutely FREE! Thank you to all of our families who engaged in our Participatory Budget discussions regarding how to spend our money.
Our pupils attended a wide range of venues this year for their School Trip all related to their learning in class. Room 1 went to Summerlee, Room 2, 5, 6 and 9 went to Science Centre, Room 3 to 5 Sisters Zoo, Room 4 went to Dundonald Castle, Room 7 Transport Museum and Room 8 enjoyed their trip to Dynamic Earth.
All our pupils visited the Library at Stonehouse Lifestyle Centre, with many pupils joining the library. Thanks to Nicole our local Librarian for helping host these visits.
Our senior pupils enjoyed their last ever day out to Cosmic Bowl before they head off to High School. A huge thanks to the Parent Council for paying for this event, again ensuring that trips are completely free for all at Newfield Primary.
A huge thank you to our staff who plan for these trips and take them out of school. A big thank you to our family and friend helpers who also attend, we can't manage this without you!
themed weeks/days
Here at Newfield we love a themed week or even just a themed day. This year we have had STEM Week, World Book Day, Eco/Outdoor Days, Elf Day and Book Week Scotland.
These events take a huge amount of planning and preparation over and above the normal planning of learning. A huge thanks go to the staff who take time to plan these for our pupils. Mrs McCafferty, Mrs Montgomery and Mrs Jones have all been instrumental in these events this year.
We received a visit from The BT Immersive Classroom this year. The pupils had a great time exploring the space and trying out the different themes. A really different experience for them. Thanks to Mrs Thomson for helping us secure this visit.
Our Primary 5 pupils successfully completed Level 1 Bikeability. Primary 7 completed Level 2, which involved cycling on the roads surrounding the school. Well done to everyone involved and thanks to Mrs Smith, Mrs Forsyth, Mrs Murray and Miss Delaney for leading this.
As our school year comes to an end we always finish with our Inter-house Quiz and 'Newfield's Got Talent' event. This year our pupils didn't disappoint. A huge well done to our winning quiz team Clyde and the three finalists from the Talent Show Madeleine, Charlie and Orla.
parental engagement events
Our Parent HWB Coffee Morning have continued to prove popular with our parents. This year SAMH came to speak to the group about how to support your child with coping with anxious thoughts and feelings. We continue to signpost supports via our social media and at our coffee mornings and look forward to more opportunities to catch up next year.
We had a very successful VE Day celebration event marking the 80th anniversary. Our pupils entertained our visitors with songs from WWII and tea/coffee and plenty of sweet treats were enjoyed by all.
We organised some events for our parents to get involved in reading. Our Book Bug launch event, Book Tasting sessions and our Parent/Pupil book club gave a chance for adults to read with our pupils.
The classes all hosted a Learning Showcase, presenting their learning for their parents. Room 1 took us to Fairyland, Room 2 taught us all about Space, Room 3 told us all about Robert Burns and Scotland, Room 4 took us to Africa, Room 5 travelled to France, Room 6 told us all about the Rainforest, Room 9 presented the story of Wall-E as part of their learning on sustainability, eco issues and technology, Room 7 treated us to the Swinging Sixties and Room 8 led a very successful Burns Supper as part of our January focus on Scots Language. Thanks to the teaching staff for supporting our pupils with this.
SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT plan work
Priority 1 focus is pupils, parents and staff Health and Wellbeing. We have held our usual HWB events and added a couple more. The friendship group run by the Attachment Ambassadors is a great addition and I know the pupils really enjoy attending.
Priority 2 has been working on our Writing approach and making some last minute changes to our 'How To' guides for staff. All of the staff have felt the new approach has improved engagement in writing and the standard of writing that pupils are producing is improving too! We have piloted the new Grammar planners and have adopted them as part of our Literacy programme. An intensive Literacy support programme has been put in place at P1 and has really supported those pupils who have required some additional help with literacy this year.
Priority 3 was focussed around the implementation of new Science planners. Thanks go to the Parent Council who funded the Science resources for Year 1 and have agreed to fund Year 2. All pupils took part in a sustainability topic this year, continuing our work around Eco issues and ensuring we are continuing to teach pupils about climate issues and how to look after the planet.
Priority 4 looked at Diversity and anti-racism alongside Stonehouse Primary. Staff got the opportunity to share their experiences with each other regarding the use of diversity texts with the pupils and made plans to develop this further. They also engaged with Education Scotland publications and discussed how these approaches could be adopted in the Primary School.
Nest session: We are taking part in Peer School Review with our friends from St Hillary's Primary and Bankhead Primary. They are coming to see the writing approach we have developed and the staff will get opportunities to discuss with and learn from our colleagues across SLC. We will be further developing our Skills work and looking to link this with our Leadership groups and Masterclasses. Staff will be trained in Inquiry-based approaches to learning and we will be piloting some pupil-led learning after Christmas. As part of our continued focus on sustainability and reducing paper our teaching staff will be moving to online planning. We will also be continuing our joint working with Stonehouse Primary on Diversity and Anti-Racism.
end of term Prizegiving
At the end of the year we like to reflect and celebrate all our pupils' achievements and hard work in school and this year is no different. Our pupils have been absolutely brilliant this year and many of them were recognised for their outstanding effort and achievement. Our end of term Prizegiving and Leavers' Assembly was also an opportunity to say goodbye to our Primary 7 pupils who are all heading off to High School. They entertained us with a fabulous assembly and we wish them all well as they move on to new schools.
THANKS
All of these events and activities would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the staff here at Newfield. Year on year, their time and effort doesn't go unnoticed. I truly do have the best staff team and everyone plays a key role in ensuring that Newfield is a fun, safe and great place to learn.
Thanks also to the Parent Council who support the school, arrange fun events for our families and fund the many, many requests we have at school. Another great year for them and thanks to our Chairperson Mr Perna who took up his role in August.
And thanks to all our families for their support throughout the year. A special mention to our small (but mighty) team of Parent/Grandparent helpers. We appreciate them giving up their own time to help in school and on trips.
Here's to 2025/26! Have a great summer!
