Welcoming Our Local Feeder Primary Schools to SSHS
Over the past few weeks, SSHS has been excited to host our local feeder primary schools, giving students a taste of what high school life is like at our school. During their visit, they enjoyed engaging lessons in Science, Theatre Sports, and Visual Arts, allowing them to explore new subjects and activities.
A highlight for Maroubra Junction students was realising that one of their teachers Nelson Russia, was an SSHS alumni and the 2007 Dux. His students were thrilled to see his name on our honour board, inspiring them about their own future achievements. We look forward to continuing to build strong connections with our local primary schools and fostering the next generation of students!
The Importance of Attendance: Building a Bright Future
At SSHS, we believe that regular attendance is crucial for student success. When students attend school consistently, they benefit from valuable learning experiences, build strong relationships with peers and teachers, and develop essential life skills.
Every lesson missed is an opportunity lost. Being present in class allows students to engage with the material, participate in discussions, and ask questions. This active involvement enhances understanding and retention of knowledge, leading to better academic performance.
Moreover, consistent attendance helps students develop a strong sense of responsibility and discipline, qualities that are vital in both their academic journey and future careers. It fosters a positive learning environment, as students are more likely to collaborate and support one another when they are present.
We encourage all families to prioritise school attendance and work together to ensure that students are in class every day. Let's make attendance a shared commitment for a brighter future!

The Importance of Wearing School Uniform: Fostering Unity and Focus
At SSHS, we believe that wearing a school uniform plays a vital role in creating a positive and productive learning environment. Here are some key reasons why school uniforms are important:
Promotes Equality: Uniforms help to reduce socioeconomic disparities among students. When everyone wears the same outfit, it creates a sense of equality and belonging, allowing students to focus on their education rather than their clothing.
Fosters School Spirit: Wearing a uniform instills a sense of pride and belonging in students. It reinforces the identity of our school community and encourages students to represent SSHS with honour.
Encourages Discipline: Uniforms promote a sense of responsibility and discipline. When students wear their uniforms, they are reminded of their commitment to their education and the standards of conduct expected at school.
Minimises Distractions: A uniform dress code helps minimise distractions related to fashion and peer pressure. This allows students to concentrate on their studies and engage more fully in classroom activities.
Enhances Safety: Uniforms make it easier to identify students within the school and during school outings. This added layer of security helps ensure a safe environment for everyone.
We encourage all students to wear their uniforms with pride and to embrace the many benefits they bring to our school community. Together, let's continue to foster unity, focus, and a positive learning atmosphere at SSHS!

Dress for Success
This morning was an amazing and eye-opening opportunity for ten Year 10 girls to experience, and learn about the struggles and enjoyment of the workforce. Dress for Success is a not-for-profit organisation that specialises in getting unemployed women into the world of working. They provide women with tools and skills to keep and secure a job and help them build their own sense of self as well as confidence. In the session the volunteers talked about how we should present ourselves to an interviewer, including our manner, appearance and our skills. As well as discussing how we could achieve and work towards securing a job in the future. They discussed with us that you not only need physical skills in your CV but also soft skills such as communication. While five girls discussed and talked about interviews with a volunteer, the other five were accompanied by their own stylist which picked a range of outfits that we were able to try on and choose to take home. We got to choose the colour, style and type of clothing we felt most confident and comfortable in, which would someday help us secure a job at an interview. We are all so grateful and greatly appreciate the effort and opportunity that Ms Stell, Dress for Success and Ms Geldart provided, and we are all ready for any upcoming interviews

Austcorp Leadership Day
The leadership group had the privilege of visiting Austcorp on Tuesday, March 11, for a leadership day with insightful discussions, activities and networking opportunities. The experience allowed us to explore different leadership styles and further question what type of leader we desired to be and be viewed as. This led to many meaningful conversations with each other as well as the people who came to speak with us that day including the founder of Austcorp, David Harrison. Throughout the day the group participated in many team-building and problem-solving activities, we would then reflect on the activities all together and build our opinion of how these leadership skills can be applied in our leadership roles. Employees at the company shared their career journeys and gave good advice while explaining how their leadership qualities as well as education has aided in their achievements. One of the most impactful activities for me was creating a vision board, which encouraged us to set goals to strive for and outline the steps needed to achieve them, whether in leadership or other personal goals. Overall, this day was very good and interactive, we made lots of memories around the lunch table and during the activities.
Lianne - Year 11 Prefect
On the 11th of March myself and 29 other current and future South Sydney high school leaders attended a leadership day, held by David Harrison and the Austcorp team, facilitated by United Way. The day was full of inspirational and thought-provoking speeches, engaging conversations and activities. Meeting these leaders of our society in a hands-on experience was a truly positive experience for all students involved. On behalf of all students in attendance, thank you to all teachers, corporations and individuals involved in hosting this event.

Alan Davidson Shield
On 5th March a group of 12 boys, drawn from Years 9-11, gathered at Heffron Park for a cricket match against Menai High School in the Alan Davidson Shield. A bye in the first round meaning the team had already progressed further in the competition than had been achieved in living memory at the school, the boys had their eye on school immortality- a win in a cricket match and the Quarter Finals to boot.
Winning the toss and electing to bowl (under coach’s instructions- bat first and get out too soon and they could be back at school doing classwork by recess), the team started well with a wicket in the first over. A false dawn, as it turned out, as soon 41 runs were on the board before the 2nd wicket fell, and 104 before the 3rd. When all seem lost, the wickets began to tumble, and soon Menai had lost their last 8 wickets for 31 runs. In truly unselfish fashion the wickets were shared around; Seb (Year 10) 2/10, Austin (Year 10) 2/21, Dylan (Year 11) 2/2, Finlay (Year 11) 2/5 all made their mark.
Chasing 136 to win, the boys started slowly. Facing quality bowling from a national bowler, the score stood at 1/9 after 10 overs and the challenge was mounting. Runs were hard to come by, but scoring shots became more frequent as Seb began to find his rhythm and he exploited the short boundary on the west side of the ground. Halfway through the innings at the drinks break it still looked like a bridge too far as the score stood at 4/53. But Seb had other ideas. 10 overs later and the score had made it to 111 with only the loss of one more wicket. Dare we dream of glory? Could this be the day that the names of 12 young men would be writ large in the history of the school?
Then a wicket fell. And another. And another. With 5 overs left, it was 7/120, 15 runs needed, but Seb was still at the crease and scoring freely. The palms were sweating, and even their coach was expecting us to win. Surely it was about to happen?
Then, with the score on 126- disaster! Turning for a second run, Seb was run out for 77 by the wicketkeeper with a throw from 30m that somehow hit the stumps. Shoulders slumped, the enemy revived and the contest was alive again with their best bowlers back on! The runs dried up, we crept towards the target, and suddenly- it was the last over.
4 runs for a tie, 5 for a win- 1 wicket in hand.
Dot ball. Dot ball. A single. Dot ball. Another single. The last ball. 2 to tie (which would be a win on countback), 3 to win outright.
The last ball is bowled, Harry (Year 10) swings and makes some connection and screams of “RUN!” emanate across the ground! They make one… but are run out going for the second! A loss- 134 to 135. Heartbreak all round as legend status slipped through the collective sweaty grasp of 12 brave young men from SSHS.
Well played to all involved- Sebastian, Austin, Toby, Rhys, Jamie, Aiden, Xavier, Finley from Year 10, Finlay & Dylan from Year 11 and Ben from Year 9. Next year we will make it happen.

Pi Day
Students participated in the International Pi Day competition, where they had to recite pi to as many decimal places as their brains could handle. The enthusiasm was as high as the number of digits in pi! The winner, Elli-Year 11, with nerves of steel and the memory of an elephant, managed to rattle off pi to an astonishing 132 decimal places, leaving everyone gasping in awe and wondering if she had a secret calculator hidden somewhere.
One student even joked that they started seeing pi digits in their dreams, while another claimed they could recite pi backwards, though we're still waiting for proof on that one. The competition was fierce, with students reciting pi to a dizzying number of decimal places, proving that math can be both fun and mind-boggling.
In the end, it was a day filled with numbers, laughter, and a newfound appreciation for the infinite wonders of pi. Who knew that a simple circle could inspire such a spirited and entertaining contest? It turns out, when it comes to pi, the limit does not exist!
