TFS Connection VOLUME XIX

August 2024

The TFS Kennedy Clinic was opened to the public 5 years ago. Although TFS previously operated both a medical and mental health clinic for individuals in its residential programs, the clinic constructed with the new office in Smyrna was intended from its opening to serve any adult with intellectual or developmental disability. Our folks deserve to be seen by healthcare professionals who welcome the opportunity to serve their needs.

The clinic is named after our youngest daughter, Marla Jane. TFS has always been about Marla Jane and others like her. If there had been no Marla Jane, there would have been no Tennessee Family Solutions. My calling was to facilitate the creation of something needed. Those with severe medical and behavioral needs have very limited choices in providers. So TFS, from its inception, set out to serve those who would otherwise likely require an institutional setting for services.

The clinic is open a full day on Monday to provide primary medical care. It is also open a ½ day on Thursday for medical care. Wednesday afternoons the mental health clinic is open. All patients must submit an application in order to be qualified to be seen at the clinic. No one is charged beyond what insurance covers for services. The growth has been slow going but continues to expand as families learn about the services of the clinics. Further information can be found at the following website:

Congratulations to the FT of the 2nd Quarter: Shantay Pirtle

Shantay shares her favorite thing about working with adults with intellectual disabilities is knowing she makes them feel loved and is there to comfort them. She's been in the ID/DD field for 3 years and in the healthcare industry for over 10 years.

She chose TFS because of her dear friend Marie and to try something different for once. She's learned to control her temper and not let people get to her.

She says her kids love it here and they always let her know that they're glad she got this job. Shantay loves her job and the people she works with.

From outings to Madam Tussaud's Wax Museum at Opry Mills, the Nashville Zoo and birthday celebrations, summer has been packed with fun events for everyone at TFS!
TFS is proud to be an Accredited Sponsor Site by the Teaching-Family Association (TFA). For more information about the TFA and the Teaching-Family Model, please visit the website link below.
