Year One Newsletter Summer One

Welcome back to the Summer Term . We can hardly believe that we are at the start of our final term in Year One. The children have made so much progress and are confident and enthusiastic learners. It was lovely to share this with you at Parents’/Carers Evening before the holidays and we would like to thank you for all of your positive comments and ongoing support.

Last half term was busy in Year One. We were particularly proud of the children during our trip to Woodhorn Colliery. They loved learning about the life of a coal miner.

The children loved visiting the ducklings and were keen to write about the life cycle of a duck.

After writing about the ducklings, we wrote recounts of our visit to Woodhorn Colliery. We are so impressed with the progress the children are making in writing.

PE

There is a change to our PE days this term. We will be working with Newcastle United Foundation to do Athletics based fundamental movement on a Wednesday and working on passing a ball and using space with Mr Richardson on a Thursday in Hazel Class and a Friday in Birch Class. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school at all times.

English

Our key text for this half term is ‘Paddington’s Post.’ We will also share other Paddington Bear stories by Michael Bond.

• We will write instructions/recipes after making marmalade sandwiches.

• We will write a letter as Paddington Bear.

• We will write fact files linked to our Geography topic on the north-east of England and London.

Phonics, handwriting and spelling continue to be a big priority and are taught and practiced daily.

Maths

This half term, we begin our work on Multiplication and Division. In year one, this involves learning to count in 2s, 5s and 10s, recognising and adding equal groups, making arrays, making doubles and sharing in to groups/grouping.

We will also develop our Shape, Space and Measure knowledge, learning about Mass and Volume & Length and Height. We will use the language of ‘heavier,’ ‘lighter,’ ‘taller,’ and ‘shorter’ before comparing mass, volume, capacity, length and height.

Science

In Science lessons, we will be learning to identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including some deciduous and evergreen trees. We will explore what is growing in our local area. We will also identify and describe the basic structure of common flowering plants and trees, using the vocabulary: leaves, branches, stem, flower, blossom, petal, roots and trunk.

Geography

This half term we will explore the physical and human geography of the north-east and then of the wider UK. We will learn key facts about where we live, like our closest city, sea and river, and will learn about the four countries of the United Kingdom and their capital cities.

RE and PSHE

Our topic in RE is an Introduction to Islam and we will be learning about the Muslim festival of Eid and how it is celebrated.

Our topic for PSHE is No Outsiders. We will use stories as a starting point and use circle times to build positive relationships with our classmates.

Music

We will be ‘Having Fun with Improvisation’ for our topic this half term! We will be thinking about how music can play a part in our daily life. We will sing songs and used tuned instruments to compose.

Computing

Children will use the Seesaw app and practice skills such as signing in and out, uploading documents and recording voice comments. We will link this to our work in science, uploading photographs and labelling plants and trees.

Art

Children will explore composition while making seascapes. They will learn about the horizon line and using water colours to add depth and colour to their paintings.

Thank you for your ongoing support. Reading continues to be a priority in Year One and, as you know, the Phonics Screening Check will take place in June. Please continue to read regularly with your child at home. Their reading books are designed to build on the children's existing phonic knowledge and practising at home will build their confidence and fluency.

Please catch us at any time if you have any queries or concerns.

Thank you, Mrs McMillan, Mrs Jones and Mrs Walker
