The Reopening of the Fitterers Building

New Shops and Restaurants in Ellensburg

Emily Malella

I’m sure the vast majority of people have been informed that the once furniture store, Fritterers, has been closed since the end of 2022, and has recently reopened with brand-new stores and restaurants to fill the space. But this article's purpose is to inform you.

yelp.com

Sweet Spot

Starting off strong, the Sweet Spot is arguably the most popular of the new stores. Selling specialty items from cloud slime to uniquely-named er6drinks, they have tons of fun items to buy and give to some of your close friends, or just try for yourself.

ellensburgsweetspot.com

If you sit down at any of the tables, you’re provided with a menu of drinks and ice creams to choose from. All are specialty made and some are even named from places in Washington. It’s the perfect place to sit and relax, even if you don’t order anything, (but I highly recommend getting yourself a little something.) Click here to get more information and go see for yourself!

The Grazing Table

The Grazing Table is a minimalistic style store that sells quality foods such as cheeses, specialty crackers, meats, fine wines, and high-end kitchenware.

thegrazingtableon4th.com

Even if you aren’t in the market to buy these products, just looking around at the aesthetically pleasing environment is a real treat. Click here for more information.

Siren Song Bistrōt

Located on your first right when you walk in the building, Le Bistrōt is a restaurant centered on European cuisine and wine pairing. Although it might not appear to allow minors, considering it’s very wine-focused, children are welcome to taste the delicious dishes they have to offer.

sirensongwines.com

If you’re interested in learning more, click here to see their hours, and menu to prepare ahead of time if you’re thinking of going with your family or friends.

While these are only about half of the newest stores open, if you haven’t already, make some time to go downtown and look around for yourself. And, if you know any family members or friends who are interested in starting a business, there are still many offices left for lease.

New Year’s Resolutions

Brooklynn DeBritz

It’s that time year again. The New Year provides an opportunity for people to have a fresh start and allows freedom to let go of the past year to have a clear mindset. The key to making an effective goal that will help you improve your life is to choose something that is aspirational yet achievable. Something that is important to you, and you want to work towards, but is not so far out of reach that you won’t be able to achieve it.

Why are New Year’s resolutions so hard to keep?

New Year’s resolutions get a bad rap. According to Fisher College of Business, only 9% of Americans who make resolutions complete them. In fact, research goes on to show that 23% of people quit their resolution by the end of the first week, and 43% quit by the end of January.

This can feel pretty depressing and make it difficult to feel motivated to achieve your goal. You are not alone, and without a structure and plan for how you are going to achieve your goal, the behavior you are engaging in tends to die off. Having a clear plan will help you stay motivated and diminish self-criticism.

How to Achieve Your Goals

Get support from others. Before beginning your goal, reach out to friends and family to tell them about your plans, and how you plan to get there. This way, they will be there to support you and encourage you.

Create a reward system for yourself. Set shorter-term, smaller goals, and reward yourself for completing them. This will help you feel more motivated to continue working towards your goal.

Keep going! Don’t get discouraged, even when things get more difficult. Nobody is perfect, so brush yourself off and keep doing it! It will be worth it when you finally complete your goal.

What are some New Year's resolution ideas for me to work towards?

Graphic by Brooklynn DeBritz

Whatever you decide, good luck in 2025!

What Do Other Countries Do For New Year’s?

Graphic by Ava henson

Every family has its traditions during New Year’s. Have you ever wondered what other traditions or customs different countries have?

Philippines

In the Philippines, during New Year's most people wear round shapes such as polka dots to promote prosperity and good luck. It is also common for children to jump as high as they can when midnight hits, for they believe it will help them grow taller. People also eat round fruits such as watermelon, grapes, oranges, pomelos (a citrus fruit- like a grapefruit), and longan (known as dragon’s eye- a cousin to the fruit lychee).

Mexico

During New Year’s Eve in Mexico, people will casually walk around the block with an empty suitcase or set it in the middle of a room. Another tradition in Mexico is Buñeulos, a crispy fritter dessert decorated and drizzled with sweet syrup. They are served on a ceramic dish, and people make a wish while smashing the plate. This tradition in Oaxaca was thought to have originated with the Aztecs who believed that the circle shape of the Buñeulos represents the sun and eating them would bring good luck.

Germany

In German-speaking Europe, as well as Finland, Bulgaria, Czechia, and Türkiye, it is common to melt small pieces of lead and throw them into cold water to make a prediction for the new year based on what shape they form. For example, if they form a ball, luck will roll your way in the future.

Italy & Spain

Throughout the years, Italy and Spain have continued the tradition of wearing red underwear for luck. Yet Spaniards insist the clothing must be new to be lucky. Italians also take advantage of the coming year by throwing old items out the window. Careful, look out below!!

Cooking & Baking Hacks

Graphic by Ashley Hill
Ashley Hill

If you're looking to elevate your cooking and baking game, these clever hacks are amazing. They can save you time and enhance your delicious creations! These tips are so effective that you won’t want to cook or bake without them.

Give them a try, and watch your goods transform!

HACK 1

I know I’m not the only one struggling to line baking pans without creating a mess, which is why this baking hack is an absolute game-changer! It is the easiest way to perfectly line a pan in under a minute without measuring anything! Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself!

Photos and graphic by Ashley Hill

So how do you do it?

Step 1: Put the parchment paper on the pan, ensuring it’s big enough on the sides.

Step 2: Fold the parchment paper in half and place it on the pan to cover only half of it, with the folded edge in the middle.

Step 3: Cut the two slits in the paper, one on each side, up to the bottom corners of the pan.

Step 4: Open it up, fold the sides in, and push it down. That’s all.

This hack works on all square and rectangular pans, and is great for baking brownies, cakes, no-bake desserts and so much more!

HACK 2

Pro tip: Do NOT microwave butter to soften it for a recipe that calls for softened or room-temperature butter! The microwave will melt your butter rather than soften it, and that will affect how your recipe turns out.

So next time you're in a pinch, pour some boiled water into a tall glass and let it sit for 5 minutes. Pour out the hot water, invert the glass over the stick of butter, and let it sit for another 5 minutes. The heat from the glass will soften your butter.

Photos and graphic by Ashley Hill

And there you have it- softened butter without melting it!

HACK 3

So many recipes call for tomato paste, but few require a whole can. Maximize the flavor and minimize the waste with this tomato paste hack!

Step 1: Roll out some parchment paper and cut into medium-sized squares.

Step 2: While using a cookie scooper, carefully put it in the middle of the parchment paper, placing another square one on top, then push a cup down to make an even layer.

Step 3: Continue until you run out of paste. Then, place all the squares in a Ziploc bag and freeze them.

You can use what you need without worrying about the rest going bad. It’s simple, efficient, and makes cooking easier. Lasts up to 3-4 months!

According to the Valley Play Museum website, their “vision is to foster imagination and nurture lifelong learning through the power and joy of interactive play. We strive to create a dynamic environment where children can explore, create, and connect with the world around them. Through hands-on exhibits, engaging programs, and collaborative experiences, we aim to inspire a generation of confident, creative, and empathetic individuals who will shape a brighter future.”

Young children will greatly benefit from the engagement that play provides. If you have little siblings, cousins, or friends, specifically in the 6-month to 6-year age range, consider bringing them to the Valley Play Museum.

They have a wide variety of activities, exhibits, and experiences for children, designed for kids 6 months and older in mind. With a whole town set, imaginations can run wild and kids can cooperatively play and imagine together. Maggie Marley, a local teacher, mother, and community member who is currently on the Board for the VPM, was excited to be interviewed about her thoughts on the Valley Play Museum!

Why are you excited about having a children’s museum in Ellensburg?

“I'm excited about it because it's a place that families can go to engage in play in meaningful ways, connect with other families and have fun!”

Why do you think Morgan students should bring their younger siblings here?

“It would be a fabulous place to bring younger siblings, as it's a safe, engaging and fun place that will keep them entertained for hours. There is also a coffee and snack shop, serving a variety of yummy drinks and treats!”

What sets VPM apart from other children’s museums?

“I think VPM is special because it integrates science, art and play. It showcases local businesses and has rotating exhibits that feature special parts of our city and community. Right now we have an exhibit highlighting different wildlife in our area, including a fishing area.”

What does VPM have to help engage older children?

“[Older children] would enjoy the 'maker space' - an area catered toward older kids who like to create. There are all kinds of art supplies and recycled materials to let them express their creativity!”

Why are you excited for children in our community to experience this amazing place?

“Personally, I'm excited to take my own children and support them in building, creating and exercising their imagination. This is especially timely with the cold season ahead (no more afternoons cooped up inside!!). I'm also excited to meet other parents and connect with our community.

Dear Rocky,

I miss my boyfriend during the day a lot because we have no classes together what do I do?

-Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

This sounds frustrating! Staying in touch can be a major aspect of your relationship. Be sure to be super consistent in reaching out to each other and saying hi in the halls, and if you feel like this is not enough to uphold your connection with each other, you can end the relationship.

-Rocky

Dear Rocky,

I have a crush on this guy and I broke up with my boyfriend for him, but he doesn’t like me, what do I do?

- Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

This is as tricky situation! It sounds like there are a lot of people in your life that you are trying to manage relationships with. Are you positive they don’t like you? Be sure to watch their actions and behaviors around you, which can say a lot about their feelings. Since you clearly liked this other crush more than your boyfriend (enough to break up with him,) I think that relationship is over. I recommend moving on and trying to find someone whose feelings match yours, which hopefully is the other. I hope you can find they have feelings for you, and if they don’t, remember it is just middle school! Good luck!

-Rocky

Dear Rocky,

I'm having trouble keeping my grades up! It's like I finally get something done but then another missing assignment shows up!! What should I do?

-Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

Keeping grades up can be hard! I totally get it. Sometimes they can seem like a mountain impossible to climb. I promise you, though, that it’s not. There are many ways you can break it down so it seems like a little bump. I suggest starting with your larger tasks, which most likely play a larger role in your grade. Then work down to the smaller ones, which will feel like a breeze once you’ve done the more pressing ones. Maybe buy a planner, or set a reminder on your phone, to help you keep up with homework. You might find your stress levels go down as well. You got this!

-Rocky

Dear Rocky,

I kinda like this guy and I really like him and bonus he's like super tall but idk what to do to figure out if he likes me

-Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

It sounds like you really like him! Whether he likes you back is a whole other realm, though. It can be kind of maddening, I understand because I’ve been in this position before as well. Patience is key in this kind of situation, and so is spending time with him. Learning his personality will help you to decide if this is right for you. The way he acts around you will tell the tale for itself! Good luck!

2025 Book Releases

Lili Baldovinos

It’s a new year! And so many authors are releasing, so let's go through some new books coming out throughout 2025!

Graphic by Lili Baldovinos

My main source of information through this article is from an app called “Goodreads.” This app is also perfect for getting organized with your reading. You can follow friends and keep updated with influencers you know who love to read, and also be able to review books and rate them from one to five stars. It’s a great app to keep track of all your books, and I highly recommend it.

For this month, some great books are coming out! One being from Rebecca Yarros, a very popular author who is a #1 New York Times Best-Selling Author actually! She will be coming out with her new book “Onyx Storm,” the third book in her “The Empyrean” series on January 21, 2025. The first book in this series is named “Fouth Wing,” be cautious when reading because this is an adult fantasy book, so be sure to search for book warnings beforehand.

Google Images

Next, we have “You Started It” by the author Jackie Khalilieh. Jackie is a lover of nineties pop culture and romance books, which is exactly the vibe to get for her new release on May 20, 2025. This book is very much in the same area of YA (young adult) romances that “Better Than the Movies” by Lynn Painter brings (I have also done a recommendation article with that exact book included in the past, so if you do want the feel of this book now, I am recommending that book again, xx). But mainly, this book will definitely be bringing in the rom-com movie aesthetic when it is released.

Google Images

If you have ever read “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” by Holly Jackson (a YA mystery book,) then you will love this new release from Veronica Bane on July 8, 2025, called “Difficult Girls. When it comes to “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder,” I personally liked it and gave it three stars, and I also know that it’s very famous for being many people's favorite. That’s why I believe adding “Difficult Girls” to your calendar of releases will be great if you are the YA mystery/thriller type of person.

Google Images

That’s it! I picked three books for this article, not going through too much information about the books itself because of them having so little information, but I do hope at least one of three caught your attention, bye!

Hot Cocoa Cookies

Can you spot the baking mistake?

Amelia Wooten

Today, I’ll be making hot cocoa cookies, a delicious winter treat! Read further to see the recipe, and the mistake I made!

Graphic and Photo by Amelia Wooten

Recipe from averiecooks.com

The ingredients I used were:

  • ½ cup butter
  • Bag of chocolate chips
  • 1 ¼ cups light brown sugar packed
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup hot cocoa
  • 1 ½ cups flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Cup of small marshmallows

The first thing I did was melt the chocolate chips and butter in separate bowls.

Then, I combined the eggs, vanilla extract, light brown sugar, melted butter, and chocolate chips into a medium-sized mixing bowl, using a whisk to mix it all.

But then, it was taking too long so I used an electric whisk on the medium setting.

Then I added the marshmallows, salt, flour, baking powder, and hot cocoa and mixed it more.

I added a little bit of water because the mixture was thick and wouldn't mix all the way, and then mixed it for the last time with a wooden spoon.

I covered the dough with plastic wrap and put it in the fridge to chill for 2 hours.

Then, I sprayed a cookie sheet with no-stick cooking spray and scooped the dough into small balls, each about 1 inch wide, and placed them 2 inches apart.

I then baked them for about 10 minutes at 325 degrees.

And these were the results!

The mistake was that... I added water! Can you do better than I did?

Eastern Front- 1943-1944

Trenton Kelly

Operation Uranus

Operation Uranus was the counterattack following the battle of Stalingrad. It was early 1943, and the war on the Eastern Front was raging. The tide was turning in favor of the Soviets. The Soviets had pushed the Germans out of the Caucasus oil fields and mountain range, almost capturing an army group of Italian and Romanian troops in an encirclement but they escaped through the Crimean peninsula.

History.com

At the same time, the Soviets were pushing into Ukraine towards the town of Rostov. The city was to be surrounded by the Soviets and captured. The Soviets completed this maneuver perfectly and this is where most historians mark the end of Operation Uranus but it is up for debate.

Operation Bagration

This Operation has been considered the point that the Germans could no longer defeat the Soviets. Operation Bagration was the Soviet counter-offensive that led them to victory. It started in the south when they pushed into Ukraine with a powerful force past the Crimean Peninsula and into the area south of Kyiv with hopes of encircling it. When the Germans prepared defenses for this the Soviets made a surprise attack into the Belarus area in the German center that was heavily unguarded, this attack led to the recapture of Minsk.

thepast.com

After the Germans gathered their armor to retaliate they failed the encirclement. The Soviet defense allowed them to get a morale boost and continue pushing into the center looking to cut off the Baltic States in the north from the rest of the German territory. With near success in this campaign, they were initially stopped by the German armor. Still, they suspected that General Georgy Zhukov was going to pull the same maneuver they did prior and juke the German armor and attack Ukraine when it was unprotected so the German armor rushed south, but this is exactly what Zhukov wanted. He plowed into the pocket he created and cut off the Baltic area. (Ostland)

With the now cut-off Ostland, the Soviets could focus back on the southern front and push into Ukraine and the Balkans. An offensive was led into Ukraine with the goal of capturing Kyiv. So with an encirclement maneuver, the city was encircled and taken with the 3rd deadliest battle of the war and the 6th deadliest in human history (numbers by Britannica).

So with the city taken the Balkans were wide open for a Soviet invasion and the pocket in the north was closed the Germans were in a complete retreat to the homeland. The German armor was stuck in Romania after these maneuvers by the Soviets and a man by the name of King Michael led a coup in Romania to switch their country from the Allies to the Axis, he was successful with the help of the Soviet Red Army and Romania was now in the allies.

Do not use your phone during this time. Try to just stay focused on creating.

EAST Swim Team

About the Ellensburg Area Swim Team

Elke Barlow

The Ellensburg Area Swim Team, known as EAST, is a swim team of pre-comp, bronze, silver, and gold levels. Each level gets higher to improve skill and endurance in the water. This is some of the important information about each level of the EAST swim team.

Pre-Comp

Pre-comp is a group that helps kids work with swim lessons and learn the competition format. This group usually does not compete in the team swim meets and focuses more on basic stroke development and the ground rules and basics of being on a swim team.

The fee per month for the pre-comp is $75 and the required equipment is fins, kickboard, and a pull buoy (team provided). This group practices two days a week (Tuesday, and Thursday.)

Bronze

Bronze is an entry-level in the competition group. In bronze you learn the basics for all four competitive strokes (Butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle) and how to train properly. you typically do 25s, 50s, and 100’s and sometimes 200’s and higher.

The fee per month for being in bronze is $90 and the required team equipment is fins, a kickboard, and a pull buoy (team provided). This group practices three days a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.)

Silver

Silver is the intermediate level group where swimmers continue to work on the competitive strokes, turns, and dives while adding more endurance.

The fee per month for being in silver is $105 and the required team equipment is fins, a kickboard, a pull buoy, and paddles. This group practices five days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.) Swimmers don't have to attend all 5 practices each week, but they are encouraged to, and must attend at least three.

Gold

Gold is the top group for the most experienced swimmers on the EAST swim team. Athletes in this level must demonstrate maturity, superior technical abilities, and meet the strict standards the coaches set. The practices for this group are challenging and are set to help the swimmers stay calm under pressure. Athletes in this group set high standards for themselves and others and are highly dedicated to the sport of swimming.

The fee per month for being in gold is $110 and the required team equipment is fins, a kickboard, a pull buoy, paddles, and tennis shoes. This group practices five days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday). Swimmers don't have to attend all 5 practices each the week, but they are encouraged to, and must attend at least four.

There are different training schedules for each level for September-June, Summer, and winter break. You can find more information online, or from an EAST coach.

Neutron Stars

Bridger Thompson

The idea of neutron stars emerged in 1967 when multiple different astronomers regularly picked up on radio flashes coming from various locations in deep space. Originally, some of these scientists thought these flashes were from an advanced alien civilization, however, the discovery of multiple transmitters deceived this idea. Today scientists call these spinning stars neutron stars or their nickname, pulsars (there are no differences between the two) neutron stars are called pulsars because they do just that, they constantly pulse out radio signals.

Beginnings

Neutron stars are the first of three options when a supermassive star dies, the star can turn into a neutron star, black hole, or something else we’ll discuss in February. Neutron stars are the most common outcome of a supernova, when the star implodes and collapses back into itself protons and electrons are squeezed into neutrons (hence the name) until the core stabilizes. Once the supernova fades after about a week you are left with the second densest object currently proven to exist (black holes being first), neutron stars.

Autonomy of a neutron star

Neutron stars are dense, in fact, one sugar cube size of a neutron star could weigh about as much as a mountain or more. Although a neutron star can be as small as 20 kilometers in diameter it can weigh as much as 10 times the sun's mass. The crust of a neutron star is mainly made of iron atoms but that is the only time you see an element on a neutron star, right after you go to the next layer the star's composition is strictly made up of neutrons and stray protons and electrons. It is because of this fluid of neutrons that the star has an incredible magnetic field, some neutron stars have such a strong magnetic composition that we had to give them the name, Magnetars. As neutron stars attract material almost as much as a black hole does, they accumulate lots of stray material, because of the magnetic field this material is then attracted to the poles (just like how the poles of Earth attract solar radiation and create more northern lights there). After that, it rides along the atmosphere until it gets shot out the top or bottom, we call these jets, material light-emitting jets, as the radiation emitted creates enough to make them visible. At the core of a neutron star neutrons are compressed so much that nobody knows what is contained at the center, however, there is no shortage of ideas of what could be contained on the inside. The most popular idea among scientists is that inside the star the neutrons are compressed so much that there are quarks and gluons (some of the smallest elementary particles known to exist) just floating around in a sea of other particles, this idea is controverted because the energy needed to separate that many neutrons are immense, however, it remains the most popular theory as no alternative has been seen.

The weirdest theory

Of all the theories about the cores of neutron stars, the weirdest and “strange” est is about strange matter. Undoubtedly one of the most unlikely prospects however it remains a fun speculation, this theory suggests that the particles at the core of a neutron star get so dense that some of them turn into a new crazy type of matter. This matter is so stable and dense that it may be the state of matter ideal for being the strongest. Since this matter is so stable when two neutron stars collide the strange matter can exist by itself, flying through space. After billions or trillions of years, if a piece of strange matter (a strangelet) by pure chance collides with a planet then the strangelet becomes infectious. A strangelet is like a perfect vacuum (the ideal state of everything) but in a matter state, making it contagious. Think of a game of infection tag, but everyone playing the game is in contact with another person, when the tagger tags one person everyone will eventually be tagged, it's like that with strange matter. The moment it touches another particle it becomes a piece of strange matter so if a planet got hit by a piece of strange matter it would become a strange planet, small and dense. But again this is not a widely accepted theory, the idea of strange matter may or may not be true.

Rules & Phases

Warhammer 40,000 is currently in its Tenth edition of rules. There are 5 phases in a game round, 2 rounds per turn and it takes around 7 and a half hours to play a game of 6 turns.

Warhammer.com

Command phase

The command phase is at the beginning of every round, which is split into two parts, the first is each player gains 1 command point to be spent on a stratagem at any time which are special abilities and actions. The second is at the beginning of every round after the first you determine if your soldiers are battle-shocked. Battle-shock is where in this part of the command phase you roll 2d6 if a unit is below Half-strength and must get equal to or higher than your leadership. If you do not succeed the unit becomes battle shocked which makes it so a unit can no longer control objectives and if they fall back from melee they must roll for every unit, if they get a 1 or 2 that unit is counted as a casualty, stratagems can also no longer be applied to them.

Movement phase

In the movement phase, you place your army on the table and then move them, most infantry moves 6”. The second part of this phase is reinforcements, units you selected to be in reserve can now deploy.

Shooting phase

In the shooting phase, you select a valid unit to fire, select a valid weapon or number of weapons, select an eligible target, roll to hit, roll to wound, make save rolls, and deduct damage from wounds.

Charge phase

In the charge phase, you select a valid unit to charge, select an eligible target, and roll to move, you have to roll on 2d6, if it is equivalent to the distance away from them, move your troops into base-to-base contact, and proceed to fight phase.

Fight phase

In the fight phase, you select a valid opponent, then you select a valid unit to attack with, select a valid weapon or number of weapons, select an eligible target, roll to hit, roll to wound, make save rolls, and deduct damage from wounds.

Subnautica

Adithya Rajendran

In 2018, an open-world survival game was released that would soon go on to become one of the most popular and greatest survival games ever made. That game was Subnautica.

Nintendo.com

Subnautica is a deep sea open-world action-adventure survival game which began development in 2013 and then fully released in 2018.

Your spaceship, the Aurora, crashes on an alien ocean planet, and you must survive and find a way to escape the planet you have landed on. It's available on Steam, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Oculus, and it costs 30$. It was made by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, and would soon become known as one of the greatest survival games out there.

“Subnautica is a template for what open-world survival games should strive to be”-IGN

The world you explore is vast and “wicked” as some may say. The game never fails to amaze you with all of its creatures and such. Also, it's not as peaceful as it may sound. As you progress and go deeper into the ocean, things get way WAY scarier. But it's a thrilling and fun experience as well.

PlaystationUniverse.com

There are many different game modes in Subnautica you can choose from. Like the usual survival mode, explore the ocean world and fight your way through it. Or creative mode, a mode that allows you to do anything in the game with no restraints. Or if you're looking for a bit of a challenge, hardcore mode, Where you only have one life and no O2 alerts. Maybe if you're looking to make things easy, choose Freedom mode, it's like survival mode except you have no hunger or thirst bar.

“I’ve savored every single moment”- Markiplier
“I adore this game, love it to bits”- Jacksepticeye
“THIS GAME IS SO MUCH FUN”-CoryxKenshin

Subnautica also has an amazing storyline you begin to dig up as you explore. “But suffice it to say the plot goes as deep as the foreboding depths, with the complexity and nuance of a great sci-fi film.”-IGN. Also, the voice acting is high quality, they did an amazing job with all of the voice lines.

Fun fact: Sub means “Below” or “Under” and Nautica means “Sea”.

Overall, Subnautica is a game that I would highly recommend playing. With all of its adventure, story, modes, and the amount of things you can do, it's a great game that certainly deserves all the praise it gets. But with all of that, will you get Subnautica?

Short Story

Beyond the Veil

written by Quinn Fleming

This is the beginning of a story I have been writing called “Beyond the Veil”. It follows the perspective of Twyla Keen as she tries to navigate her way back to the memories that have disappeared from her mind.

Prologue

The human mind is truly a scary thing.

Twyla. That’s the only piece of personal information I can remember as I lay on my emergency room cot. Doctors flood in and out of my vision, flashing lights around my face and checking pulses. I don’t object. My feelings feel muted, in a way. Muted and dull, as though the volume was turned down very low.

Voices pierce through the fog that has veiled my senses. The doctors are speaking to me now, their voices soft, full of emotion and feeling. I feel a pang of envy shoot through me as I listen, jealous of their ability to feel. It’s more subtle than usual but still present. My own feelings feel as though they could never hold that amount of emotion again. The envy dissipates, leaving me as a blank slate.

“Miss, can you hear me?”

Another pang goes through me, but this time it isn’t a feeling of jealousy. It’s a sharp pang through my temples. The combination of light and noise join forces against me, making it impossible to answer the woman speaking to me.

I see a flash of worry across the woman’s face as she turns to the other doctors for help.

I close my eyes again, not wanting to enter the reality of my life. I have memory loss. There’s no other explanation for the massive gaps in my brain. I close my eyes, not wanting it to be real.

It can’t be real.

My heart is thumping as the situation sinks in. It burrows deep, obscuring what little grasp I had left on my past self. And that is what sparks the question: who was I?

Nothing comes to mind, as flashes of white begin to obscure my vision once more, the fog settling and the veil descending on me. I feel a tear slip, my emotions breaking through one last time before my body becomes a shell.

This will be the end of me.

Short Story

Mika’s Story

written by Celia Hamilton

It was a chilly winter day, but the sun shot like a hyper child through the clouds. Mika, a girl from the local town, dragged a frozen pail down the long path to the well. The cistern had broken two weeks before, and Mika had been chosen to bring water to the town every day. Each morning, she hiked up to the well and took the town’s rightful share from it. The water giver divided it among the people, giving them rations which were, to be blunt, scant at the least.

After all these things were done, Mika would run back to her house and nestle under blankets in front of the fire. Ama would pull her and her little brother, Soren, into her arms and tell another story. Ama often shared magical tales with her two children. But today, Ama was sick. And no story would wait for Mika when she came home.

¨Why shouldn't I take my sweet time? Ama would be fine if this stupid water wasn't rationed. If not for the water giver, I would hear a story today!” She thought, angrily.

But then, a little blue light shone in the woods.

“I may as well have a real-life adventure. I won't hear one tonight.”

Mika set down the pail at the edge of the woods and followed the little wisp.

She was led through the woods, over a little brook, curiously not frozen. She slipped on the tiny stepping stone, wet with snow, and wet her foot in the creek.

“Blast! How am I to explain this to Ama?”

But she didn't care enough to ponder it for long. She ran to catch up with the wisp, who was just beyond the stream. She ended up at the fence of Harold Filcher, the meanest old man in the town. He was known for his specific hatred of children. The wisp kept floating through the farm, past the property line and various unfriendly signs. Mika mustered up her courage and dashed after it, not

wanting to miss the adventure. She followed him across the property until they climbed another fence, finally exiting his property. She ran after the wisp, which was edging ahead. She came to a fjord, and from the fjord flowed a river, which flowed into a pipe, which filled the cistern. Mika couldn't believe

it. She had found the source of the problem! She could now spend her days with the other children, not hiking to the well each day. She was so happy that she began to jump up and down. Suddenly, the spot she was standing on evaporated. She was sliding down the cliff! She frantically grasped for something to hold onto, anything stable. The jagged rocks scraped her side as she slid down the cliff, like some kind of sickening carnival ride. She finally found a thin ledge and grasped it with all that was left of her strength. The landing place was six feet from the top of the fjord, low enough to be doable… but high enough to be disappointing. She tried in vain to pull herself up but had no strength to do the task. She finally swallowed her pride and called out.

“Mr. Filcher! Help!” she screamed.

She cried out over twenty times, each call louder than the last.

“I hear you, darn brat! What do you want?” asked the disgruntled face of Harold B. Filcher, peering over the edge of the cliff.

“Can you get me up?” she begged.

“Yes, of course!” his face disappeared over the top for a moment and came back with a rope in hand. He made a loop that she held onto, and he pulled her up over the side of the cliff. She took a deep breath and began to cry.

“Did anyone ever tell you how kind you are?” she cried, thanking him.

This sentiment was greeted with eye rolls and scoffs from the other party. He saddled her on his horse and took her back to her home, promising to convince the water giver to address the broken pipe. She thanked him again and burst into the house.

“Soren,” she said. “Have I got a story for you!”

Short Story

Random DnD Shenanigans

Michael Eberhart

In a galaxy not that far away, a Half-Elf (Kay), Human Barbarian (Chumba-Wumba), and a Monk Wizard (Zarlack) were Ubered deep into the dark forests. Unfortunately, their Uber driver had a sudden emergency and had to leave them stranded.

They had only known each other from the car ride there, but they all had something in common… They were all searching for “The Oasis”.

They decided to split up and explore the forest. Zarlack searched for animals in hopes of finding a pet. In searching he slipped and fell into a thorn bush full of berries, where he gathered some. While gathering berries he heard a sound, Zarlack looked up and saw a giant creature- Tiger Bear. It was huge and magnificent. It didn’t seem too ferocious, so he decided to try to speak with it. Zarlack greeted Tiger Bear calmly in hopes of befriending him. Tiger Bear stood on his hind legs and said, “Why have you come to my forest being?”

“I have come in search of “The Oasis. I have some berries if you would like some," Zarlack responded.

Tiger Bear asked, “What do you want from me, and why should I help you?”

“We can work together as partners to discover “The Oasis” where everything you could ever want lies. Infinite delicious food, kingly shelters, and beautiful scenery," Zarlack exclaimed.

“I suppose if this “Oasis” is real, it would be quite the change from this dark forest. If I agree with your request, you must provide the description. Or else… I will eat you.”

Zarlack nodded in agreement to Tiger Bears' terms. Zarlack wandered the large forest with his new friend.

After a while, they saw bright lights shining in the distance. Soon, Chumba-Wumba runs into them and is frightened at first by the presence of Tiger Bear. But Zarlack reassures Chumba-Wumba that Tiger Bear is friendly. Chumba-Wumba notices the distant lights and asks Zarlack about them. Zarlack explains that he doesn’t know either. Chumba-Wumba decides to move towards the lights while Zarlack and Tiger Bear stay put.

Kay has been trying to contact the spirits of the area but has had no such luck. Kay had explored the area a little and discovered a small pond. He decided to take some time to find materials for a fishing rod. Kay also found some worms as bait for fishing. He sat on a nearby log and began to fish.

Chumba-Wumba continued towards the distant lights but got distracted by something lurking in the bushes. He went to investigate, and six Gruesomes (a Gruesome is a type of monster with a sludge-like appearance) emerged from the bushes. Startled Chumba-Wumba let out a loud holler. Zarlack, now a distance away from Chumba-Wumba, heard the scream. Zarlack thought it was a cry for help. Zarlack has teleportation powers, which he used to teleport Tiger Bear and himself to Chumba-Wumba. Zarlack didn’t know Chumba-Wumba’s exact location, but he knew his general direction. Zarlack and Tiger Bear teleported right next to Chumba-Wumba who was trying to defend himself from the gruesomes. Zarlack electrocuted the gruesome with his Thunder-Spell (a spell of black magic), which instantly vaporized five of them. There was still one gruesome left. Zarlack picked up the gruesome with Mage-Hand and threw the gruesome deep into the forest. Zarlack threw the gruesome so far, it was not visible to the naked eye anymore.

Kay was still fishing in his small peaceful pond when he heard a scream gaining closer to him. Kay felt confusion as he looked around in search of the sound, when all of a sudden a gruesome fell into his pond, instantly turning into an applesauce. Kay was mortified, and very confused. Zarlack had thrown the gruesome so far, it landed in Kay’s peaceful fishing pond. Kay, still confused, started to feel some irritation and maddening. He learned the monster that rudely interrupted him was a Gruesome, which makes some good fish bait. Kay borrowed some of the gruesome gore and decided to continue fishing, still annoyed.

Zarlack, Chumba-Wumba, and Tiger Bear continued towards the distance lights, still intrigued and questionable from them. They started getting closer to the lights, beginning to make out what they were. It was a small village. They found a path that brought them the rest of the way to the village. Chumba-Wumba was about nine feet tall and massive. He looked like an angry beast, and Tiger Bear was the same. They both came by as a threat to the townsfolk. The townsfolk stared up at the “Beasts” in fear. They decided to attack in defense of their town. Zarlack, Chumba-Wumba, and the tiger bear took cover behind a building, getting shot at by arrows. Zarlack sent out Tiger Bear but it was not powerful enough and returned to cover. Zarlack had enough. He stood up tall and mighty through the arrows and used his black magic to create a giant fireball. The fireball glowed like the sun. Zarlack never intended to kill, but he didn’t seem to have a choice. He grabbed ahold of Chumba-Wumba and Tiger Bear, threw the fireball, and teleported far away, not knowing what happened to the village.

Tiger Bear and Chumba-Wumba teleported nearby Kay safely. Zarlack teleported directly on top of Kay. Zarlack had caught on fire from the fireball. He now on top of Kay caught him on fire as well. Zarlack throws Kay into the pond, then jumps in after. Kay catches a fish in frustration and quickly eats it to replenish himself. Zarlack then throws Kay out of the pond, and thunder strikes the pond, instantly killing all twenty fish in the pond. Zarlack gathers the fish and starts walking away. Before Zarlack can make any distance, Kay grabs him, throws him to the ground, and kicks him in the stomach, knocking the wind out of him. Zarlack in pain looks at Kay in confusion. Kay very irritated starts yelling at Zarlack for causing unnecessary issues. “We were supposed to work together and with nature in peace to find “The Oasis”. But you’ve gone and screwed everything up,” Kay says to Zarlack in a powerful demonic-like voice. “Leave before I kill you” Kay exclaims. Zarlack got off the ground shaken and slightly afraid and scurried away into the forest with his fish.

Kay begins moving in the only direction he can. After a little while Kay sees a very distant shimmer of light. Not too far along afterward, a gruesome crosses Kay’s path. Kay is very irritated at this point, he does not feel like dealing with a gruesome. Kay grabs the gruesome by its neck, cursing it with magical spells, making it feel immense pain. It suffers terribly for a few seconds, then explodes. Kay feels slightly better from this.

Zarlack has been setting up traps for Gruesomes with the bones of the fish he collected. He used the excess meat to heal. After setting the rest of the traps, he sat by a tree and rested, inevitably falling asleep. Chumba-Wumba has been resting as well, falling asleep near the pond.

Kay is the only member still awake. He passes by Zarlack, comfortable sleeping against a tree. Kay ignores him in scarce that he might kill him out of past anger. Kay continues his journey. The forest begins to get thicker, with more dark green trees. The glimmer is more of visible light.

Zarlack awakes from his slumber, heading to check his traps. Zarlack caught seven Gruesomes. He uses his power of beast translation to tame all seven Gruesomes. Zarlack felt alone and scared so he teleported towards Kay. Right before he teleported, he got tackled by Chumba-Wumba teleporting him too. Zarlack and Chumba-Wumba teleport a few feet behind Kay. Kay still wasn’t very happy with Zarlack, and the mixture of irritation and surprise caused Kay to uppercut Zarlack in the stomach knocking the wind out of him once again. Cumba-Wumba stepped back after seeing what happened to Zarlack. After Kay realized what had happened, he helped Zarlack off of the ground. “Why are you here Zarlack?” Kay asks disgustedly. “I just wanted to group up again, and Chumba-Wumba followed,” Zarlack said still winded. “Whatever,” Kay said. The group continued walking towards the light.

After what had felt like an eternity, the group finally reached the light. It was a large castle with miles long of walls on each side of it. Kay walks up to the giant doors and knocks. The doors creak open showing three ghost knights wielding swords reading to battle. Kay embarrassed one of them by using a spell causing his head to explode.

The other two knights look at their comrade's corpse in surprise, only making them more angry. Zarlack uses Mage-Hand on one of the two left causing him to fly through a wall. The one knight left started to run through the castle in fear, but Chumba-Wumba chases and lays on him, inevitably suffocating him. With the three knights dead, the group walks through the castle searching for the door leading to “The Oasis”. Eventually after searching the colossal rooms, they found a room with a singular door. Chumba-Wumba saw the door. He was too stupid to know how to open it, so he ran through the wall creating a hole in “The Oasis”.

It was real, and they made it…
