Pumpkin Math In First Grade

Introduction

First grade students put their math skills to the test with a fall-themed activity called Pumpkin Math. Working together, students measured, counted, and observed their pumpkins to learn how math connects to real-world objects. During the activity, students practiced estimating and recording data, measured the weight and circumference of their pumpkin, and counted the seeds inside. They even predicted whether the pumpkin would float or sink before testing it out in water. The hands-on work led to real results: the pumpkin weighed 12.3 pounds, measured 34 inches around, contained 549 seeds, and showed 24 lines on its surface. And yes, after all the predictions, it did float!

They wrapped up the activity by carving a pumpkin face and showing off their best spooky smiles. What a fun, hands-on way to learn!
