THE GROOVE DESIGNED BY NANCY ABURTO and SAMUEL THURMAN

DESIGN PROPOSAL

Atlanta is on the brink of a transformative change with The Groove, a project aimed at redefining the I-85/75 connector. This massive concrete expanse, currently a barrier dividing communities and limiting growth, is set to become a symbol of unity and progress. "The Groove" proposes a multifaceted approach, not merely as a beautification project but as a crucial step in enhancing the city’s quality of life.

The plan involves reshaping the connector, currently stretching nearly 4 miles with up to 16 lanes of traffic. The intent is to decrease its overwhelming presence by reducing its scale and rerouting a significant portion of the through-traffic to the perimeter. This aligns with the Georgia Department of Transportation’s ongoing improvements, addressing the city’s traffic woes holistically.

In place of the downscaled roadway, "The Groove" introduces a vibrant mix of green spaces, pedestrianfriendly zones, and affordable housing. The project creatively navigates the intricate urban landscape, adapting its strategy based on the local context. In areas with minimal ramp disruptions, development focuses inward, whereas in stretches free from such constraints, the focus shifts outward. This flexible approach allows for a dynamic interaction between the city’s fabric and the new developments.

By transforming the I-75/85 connector, "The Groove" aims to stitch together a city long fractured by physical and social divides. It’s a bold endeavor to reclaim urban land for more than just vehicular traffic, promoting diverse transportation modes and fostering a sense of connectedness. This initiative is not just a redesign of a highway; it’s a step towards connecting people and communities, serving as a potential blueprint for urban revitalization nationwide.
