Walsh Construction celebrates expansion of Ascension Alexian Brothers Medical Center

Elk Grove Village, Illinois - Walsh Construction joined Ascension Health to unveil the 100,000-square-foot expansion of the Ascension Alexian Brothers Medical Center that will bring significantly improved patient care and treatment capacity to the hospital. The project delivers state-of-the-art healthcare services, particularly for neuroscience patients, by adding new private inpatient rooms equipped with the latest technology. The project also includes the extension of the hospital’s East Tower, with the construction of two additional floors that will house 36 advanced patient care rooms designed to provide an optimal healing environment.

In addition, the expansion incorporates 22,000 square feet dedicated to modern operating rooms and recovery spaces, specifically designed to facilitate cutting-edge surgical procedures. These new facilities will support a range of innovative treatments, including robotic surgeries and minimally invasive techniques, allowing the medical center to offer some of the most advanced care options available. This upgrade not only enhances the hospital’s capacity to treat more patients but also ensures a higher level of care, with specialized rooms and surgical capabilities that enable more precise and effective treatments.

Archer Western completes Phase 2 Expansion of Fowler Water Reclamation Facility

Cumming, Georgia – Archer Western Construction celebrated the completion of Phase 2 expansion upgrades at the Fowler Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) in southwest Forsyth County. Archer Western joined County officials, including District 3 Commissioner Todd Levent, County Manager David McKee, Director of Water & Sewer Scott Adams, and representatives from ESG Engineering and Inframark for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the occasion.

The expansion project, delivered by Archer Western and ESG Engineering, increases the wastewater treatment capacity of the facility from 5 million gallons per day (MGD) to 7.5 MGD, providing a critical boost to the county’s infrastructure. Key improvements to the facility include, upgrade of the influent pump station, addition of two membrane bioreactor (MBR) tanks, construction of a new chemical facility and upgrades to existing systems and equipment.

Archer Western completes EPCOR Copper Basin Water Reclamation Facility

San Tan Valley, Arizona - Archer Western has completed EPCOR's new Copper Basin Water Reclamation Facility, a 3 MGD wastewater treatment facility will treat domestic, industrial and commercial waste prior to discharge. The treated water will be distributed to recharge the bains or for beneficial reuse.

The fully-enclosed facility contains state-of-the-art odor control equipment, extensive systems to monitor conditions and other important design features. Copper Basin will use treatment technologies that meet the ADEQ's Best Available Demonstrated Control Technology (BADCT) requirements. The plant will also meet setback standards, be fully and safely enclosed, and will not be accessible via neighborhood streets. All noise-generating equipment will be contained in either a building or a sound-attenuation enclosure to provide sound mitigation

FDOT reports new Howard Frankland bridge roughly 90% complete

Tampa, Florida - Excitement is building as the new Howard Frankland Bridge, Tampa's largest-ever bridge project, is now 90% complete and set to open next spring. This $865 million project will bring a safer, quicker, and more efficient commute for 250,000 drivers daily, with eight lanes, including four new express lanes designed to reduce congestion and improve safety.

OSU Wexner Medical Center now 85% complete

Columbus, Ohio - As crews prepare for lower-level turnover to Fit-up in mid-October, construction on The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Hospital is 85% complete. Once final inspections are complete on the lower level, ground, and Level 1, the Fit-up crews will install furniture, medical equipment, technology, signage and art.

  • Crews are completing installation of the large revolving door in the lobby on the ground level.
  • Installing wood panels under the escalators to prepare for a coffee shop area underneath.
  • Working on installing glass and ceilings to The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC-James) concourse.
  • Completing the installation of a large Block O in the lobby.
  • Completing rough-ins on level 24.
“This is when we really start to see ideas coming to life,” said Ragan Fallang, OSU project manager of the inpatient hospital. “Sometimes during the early stages of construction, it’s hard to see the vision. But now we’re preparing to install technology and furniture on the lower levels and things are really taking shape.

VIDEO: Lawson House project leaders discuss delivery of historic renovation

Chicago, Illinois - The $128 million renovation of Lawson House modernized and preserved the historic Art Deco building, transforming 583 single-room occupancy units into over 400 affordable apartments with private kitchens and bathrooms. The 200,000-square-foot, 24-story structure was rehabilitated in collaboration with Holsten Real Estate Development and Holsten Human Capital and has been accumulating industry accolades since its completion.

The project was completed in Spring 2024 and residents have returned to occupy the building's renovated units. Since its completion, the project has gained a collection of accolades from the Chicago design and construction industry:

  • September 2024: Honor Award in Design Excellence from AIA Chicago.
  • August 2024: Excellence in Historic Preservation Award from AIA Illinois.
  • June 2024: Affordable Rental Housing Preservation Award from LISC Chicago
  • May 2024: Merit Award - Renovation & Adaptive Reuse from Chicago Building Congress.

Structural steel placement takes center stage John Carroll University Athletics Wellness & Events Center

University Heights, Ohio - Long span joists are being erected and masonry core towers are nearing completion at the site of John Carroll University's new Athletics Wellness & Events Center. The facility will feature a new 200-meter track within the 63,000-square-foot field house, connected to the DeCarlo Varsity Center and the University's existing recreation complex.

Additionally, 26,000 square feet of interior renovations will be made to the current Student Center. Walsh is also continuing interior build out in the adjacent facility's basement level with framing and MEP progressing. Interior renovations and system upgrades are expected to be completed in the next month.

I-69 Ohio River Crossing work begins in Evansville

Evansville, Indiana - Walsh Construction and joint venture partner Traylor Bros., Inc. joined Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb and Indiana Department of Transportation for a groundbreaking ceremony to commence construction on Section 3 of the I-69 Ohio River Crossing Project.

The design-build project includes the Indiana portions of the approach roadways and bridges that will ultimately provide all-weather construction access to the river, Walsh and Traylor Bros. will construct a new 1.6-mile alignment of I-69, extending north from the Indiana border to the existing mainline I-69. It will also feature a new interchange at I-69/Veterans Memorial Parkway, providing free-flow movements in all directions.

Archer Western and Synthica Energy break ground on new Renewable Natural Gas Plant

San Antonio, Texas - Archer Western joined Synthica Energy for an official groundbreaking ceremony to commence construction for the new Renewable Natural Gas Plant. The facility will be the first of its kind in San Antonio and is expected to divert nearly 250,000 tons of waste from local landfills each year. The anaerobic digester will use time-tested technology that transforms waste into renewable energy.

Structural concrete and station work headline latest RPM progress

Chicago, Illinois - The joint venture of Walsh Construction and Fluor Corporation are progressing on multiple fronts across the CTA Red-Purple Modernization Project, recently the team completed the final structural concrete pour for the current phase of the Red-Purple Bypass portion, using two concrete pumps simultaneously while coordinating with live train traffic. Along the Lawrence-to-Bryn Mawr portion, crews are constructing the new, fully accessible Red Line stations at Lawrence, Argyle, Beryn and Bryn Mawr, installations are in full-swing along with the recent delivery of escalators and installation of structural steel for elevators.

Archer Western delivering Phases One and Two of Carolina Crossroads Improvements Project

Columbia, South Carolina - Archer Western and United Infrastructure Group are delivering Phases One and Two of the massive Carolina Crossroads Improvements project on the northwest side of Columbia. Crews are improving stretches along I-126 and I-20, from building bridges, widening lanes and modernizing interchanges. A key structure along Phase 1 includes a 650-foot-long curved steel girder bridge that requires precise coordination to maneuver and secure 150-foot to 180-foot singular curved sections onto the highway.

Concurrently, crews are working on Phase 2 along I-20 while updating the Broad River Road interchange and adding three new bridges, two for a diverging diamond interchange over I-20 and one for a collector ramp. The overall project aims to increase traffic capacity and improve flow through the area previously referenced as "Malfunction Junction."

The Walsh Group First-Year Program officially kicks off

The Walsh Group has launched the First-Year Program, which exclusively caters to newly hired college graduates. The First-Year Program will deliver opportunities to internally network with peers and executive leaders, while becoming immersed in our culture, and receiving advice and resources to help each individual navigate through their first year of employment.

The program began with in-person kick-off meetings that were recently completed in Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta. Now, each program member will receive a four-month mentor period, along with a collection of in-person jobsite tours and virtual meetings to further build their knowledge of the company, personnel and culture.

Newton, Massachusetts - The Walsh Construction and SPS New England Joint Venture Team has completed formwork, rebar installation and concrete placement for two new bridge piers, part of the I-90/I-95 Newton-Weston Interchange. Foundation pile driving is underway for the next concrete pier and abutment.
Evanston, Illinois - Mass excavation for Northwestern University's new Ryan Field is nearly complete, as crews shift focus to foundation work in the north and south ends of the stadium, soon moving to the west side. Underground utility work also is expected to begin soon.
DeKalb County, Georgia - Ongoing progress on the new west ramp from I-285 to I-20 eastbound. Archer Western and ER Snell crews are continuing to make strides on the interchange, helping to build a stronger Georgia and create smoother gateway to Atlanta.

Salem, Virginia - Archer Western welcomes Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin to the I-81 Widening project, where 5.2 miles of highway are being widened in Roanoke County and the City of Salem.
Tempe, Arizona - At the Johnny G. Martinez Water Treatment Plant, Archer Western team places Miraculous Medals in the first pour for the Granular Activated Carbon and Dewatering Improvements Project. Crews have been focused on rock breaking, excavation, lay, welding, heat shrink sleeve, rebar, and concrete activities needed to finish the project's 36” and 54” trunk lines and the associated 18”, 24”, and 30” risers.

Across the entire project, Archer Western and Herzog crews are hard hat work constructing the civil infrastructure, walls, bridges, stations, tracks and systems for the 26-mile project.
Charleston, South Carolina - Archer Western joined United Infrastructure Group, Banks Construction and Charleston County representatives to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Main Rd. Corridor Segment A Project. The primary purpose of the project is to reduce congestion / improve capacity at the intersection of US 17 and Main Road, as well as increase capacity on Main Road from Bees Ferry Road to River Road/Chisolm Road.
Columbus, Ohio - The Ohio State University Biomedical & Materials Engineering Complex (BMEC) Phase 2 is about 45% complete as Walsh Construction recently finished installing the final concrete piers.
Carrollton, Texas - DFW team members volunteered at Metrocrest Services, a local non-profit offering various bundles of assistance to families and elderly in need. Metrocrest’s pantry offers a unique experience, where individuals can make their own choices from a wide range of groceries and toiletries.
