Canbury School Newsletter 28th June 2024. ISSUE 339

Dear Families, Friends, Students and Staff.

This is the penultimate Newsletter of the school year. Where on earth has it gone? This week has felt even more busy than usual, if that is possible! The final completed public exam has been collected today and the builders have moved on site to begin work on our extension which will give us some much needed extra teaching space in September. Exciting times.

It was very pleasant to see so many of our parents and families this week at our annual Garden Party and the photos below give a flavour of what a happy time we all had. We are just counting out the money raised and School council members will have a discussion in September about what they would like to spend it on.

Elsewhere students have been to see the theatre phenomenon 'Hamilton', learned how to be safe when doing water sports, parents attended a meeting about the forth-coming Malaga visit in October and we welcomed new student Elizabeth into Year 7. You've got to admit - we really do like to mix things up here at Canbury.

Enjoy the weekend and see you next Monday morning for the last week. Bring it on, we're ready!

Mrs Rich – Head.

Upcoming dates for your diary.

Well done to Eric, Lysander and Benjamin for achieving brilliant marks in their end of year ICT exam.

Well done to Theo for working hard on the reading comprehension and asking thoughtful questions in English.

Great test result in Spanish for Harry…..buen trabajo!

Well done to Remi, Alfie, Carl, Lysander, Mason, Ryan and Marley for amazing Science presentations.

Garden Party is a joyous, if scorchingly hot, affair!

Waiting for the raffle.....

Our Garden Party was such a happy affair on Wednesday evening. For once there was absolutely no rain! It was a very lovely evening with parents, staff and students mingling happily in the playground, whilst enjoying a delicious hog roast and a chilled glass of wine.

Alongside the bottle tombola, the ping pong challenge, face painting, Logan's disco and the mystery sock lucky dip, we had a tremendous array of prizes and experiences to be won in the grand raffle. Our thanks to those very generous people who were able to donate prizes, each and every one of which was won by an excited and appreciative recipient!

Mrs Burke bows out with a cultural visit for her Year 7s.

We said 'goodbye' to Mrs Burke yesterday, who leaves us after seven years at Canbury. Mrs Burke has worn many hats during her time with us, teaching English at one stage and latterly Religious Studies, alongside her literacy intervention 1:1 sessions. As Mrs Rich said, "the students and we will miss your calm and steady teaching style and the wealth of knowledge and experience following 45 years working in the education sector." For her parting words, Mrs Burke, a former Head Teacher, shared with staff that she is off to use her 'retirement' volunteering, helping care for her beloved grandchildren, and developing her dyslexia and dyscalculia tutoring. She is going to be one busy lady, and we wish her all the very best for the future.

Mrs Rich presented Mrs Burke with flowers and some John Lewis vouchers from staff. Farewell Mrs Burke, we'll miss you.

Meanwhile, Year 7 had a wonderful afternoon visiting the Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden, which is the largest mosque complex in the UK, writes Mrs Burke. There are a number of prayer halls and large rooms for community events, such as educational talks, banquets and even sports competitions. We were all impressed by the beautiful marble buildings, which kept us cool on a very hot day, and the amount of charity work undertaken by the Muslim community.

Mrs Burke asked her students what they thought of their visit - she said their responses were positive. It's always so interesting to learn about other people.

Our favourite part of the visit was checking the sound-proofing in the new babies and toddlers section next to the prayer hall. The trip was rounded off by Mr Hogan and Mr Goodyear singing along to Arctic Monkey tracks - they have their music far too loud!

Builders and Actors work alongside each other.

We happened upon Miss O'Riordan's Y7 drama class this morning. Above the din of the builders, she got her thespians giving their all in the fresh air. Don't you just love the 'can do' attitude at Canbury?

Everyone got into the spirit of things, even the spectators.

Watch out Ms Boyle!

Year 10 had a guest teacher and LSA for their Maths lesson on Wednesday morning when Matt and Brendan introduced the class to Cumulative Frequency Curves and how to use them to find the Median and InterQuartile Range.

Matt and Brendan - new teachers in the Maths Room - can you spot Ms Boyle?.....

All the students were focused throughout as Matt and Brendan went through the resources they had prepared for the lesson.

No cause for alarm.

Years 8 students created their own eruptions in the Science Laboratory this week, making volcanoes. Luckily, unlike in real life, no-one got injured. Job done Ms Anjum, well done.
Then today Mr Labinjo moved things up a level and did the volcano experiment outside. Here's Eric looking very pleased with himself and his work!

Your charity prefect needs YOU!

Newly appointed Charity Prefect Issy in Year 8 is looking for recruits to her squad. Busy Issy wants to get the Canbury charitable works up and running but she has big shoes to fill, replacing Reenie, so please step forward to help. Search out Issy within school and help her start the charity ball rolling for September. Ideas and suggestions very welcome.

Here's Issy - she's waiting for your help!

Ahoy! Buoy in the water......

Today Year 10 students were lucky enough to go down to Albany Outdoors Centre, writes Mr Barnes, to take part in a practical water safety session on the River Thames. Students were taught how to stay safe by the river, what to do if they ever got into trouble in water and how to help from land if somebody is struggling in the water.

A great way to learn something new - actually do it. Three cheers for Logan, who clearly saved Mr Barnes' life, rescuing him with the throw bag!

It was an eye-opening and brilliant experience for our students; they learnt lots of real world, practical safety skills. They got to jump into the water too, which after this week's mini heatwave was welcome relief indeed!

Canbury footballers show tremendous teamwork.

Last week Canbury had the pleasure of participating in the London Para Youth Games at Gunnersbury Park, where four of our players represented the Royal Borough of Kingston. Our students, pictured below, combined with some others from St Philips to represent the Borough, performing really well in all of our matches, writes Mr Temple.

Left to right: Lloyd, Theo, Evan and Mani.

It was an interesting challenge playing alongside players against whom we usually compete, but our boys integrated superbly and showed fantastic combination play with their new teammates. In the end, Kingston’s team was a bit unlucky with the results. We played better than most of the opposition we faced, but unfortunately we could not capitalise on our chances. We are really still really proud Kingston finished the tournament in a respectable 11th place.

Prospective Canbury students paid us a visit last week.

We welcomed a delightful cohort of prospective and confirmed students to Canbury last week. They joined in, looked around, played with older students at break time and generally told us they'd be back!
