A modern-day griot...
Growing up next door to my grandmother on Detroit’s West Side, I used to listen in awe as recounted her Great Migration journey from Thomasville, GA. As a little girl, I never knew that I was destined to become an Off-Broadway playwright, award-winning animator and filmmaker or write for Hollywood studios, but I always knew I wanted to tell stories.
I launched 1642 (named after my childhood home) as a platform to make the projects that authentically reflect my community. From the locksmith who was secretly a brilliant poet, to the incarcerated single mother who could paint like Henry O. Tanner and all of the rich characters in between.
