Principal's Message
As Term 1 wraps up, I’d like to thank our school community for such a warm and welcoming start to the year. It has been a pleasure getting to know Mullumbimby High School, and I’m delighted to continue as relieving principal while Mr Armstrong is on leave.
This term has been filled with learning, leadership, and connection. I’m so proud of the energy and enthusiasm our students have brought to school life over the past 11 weeks.
Growth and Success
Our senior students kicked off the year by working with Elevate Education to sharpen their study skills. These sessions—run by recent HSC graduates—were engaging and practical, and our parent session was also well attended.
To support Year 11 and 12 students further, we’ve launched Gaining the Edge, offering feedback on practice essays and HSC papers. Every second Wednesday in the library, students are getting some valuable one-on-one support from our experienced staff in an intensive session. Students are able to access the program during the rest of the week also.
Homework Club has also returned on Thursday afternoons, offering students a quiet space, snacks, and teacher support to help them stay on top of their studies.
Meanwhile, Year 7 and 9 students completed NAPLAN smoothly, even after a short delay due to ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred. This assessment provides important information to help us plan and personalise learning.
The late news on Friday week 10 before I started my report was that our STEM Olympiad team who participated against schools across the region at Kingscliff High emerged as the winners of the day. We can look forward to a more detailed report in the coming days.
School Spirit and Community Life
Our school culture has been on full display this term:
- Valentine’s Day Fundraiser – Year 12 brought joy to the school with roses, chocolates, and songs. Thank you to Ms Clarkson and the Year 12 team!
- International Women’s Day – Our SRC and staff raised awareness and funds for a local women’s shelter, shining a light on equality and inclusion. Monet Shortland and Bonnie Martin represented our school proudly at the Mullumbimby Chamber of Commerce breakfast where they were able to express the theme of this years IWD, ‘Action Equity’.
- Swimming Carnival – The weather couldn’t dampen our spirits! The sun came out, the races were close, and Kurrajong took out the title. Well done to all students who participated with such great energy.
- Year 12 Easter Competition - Our year 12 students are currently running that fundraising.
- Volunteering in our community - Many of our students volunteered during recent storm preparations—filling sandbags, supporting their neighbours, and showing true community spirit. It has been really lovely to receive emails to the school about Phoenix from Year 10 who offered care and support at an evacuation centre. His compassion made a real difference to people in a very difficult time and speaks volumes about the kind of people we’re proud to have at Mullumbimby High.
- Muggi Muggi Friendship Day - Mullumbimby High School played host this year to the Muggi Muggi Friendship Day. First Nations students from across our Partner Primary Schools brought along a friend to participate in the workshops alongside their MHS student mentors. The workshops run by Aboriginal staff and local elders in culture, history, art, toy-making, games and dancing, were a great way for Aboriginal students to courageously share their culture with their friends and engage with the community.
Leadership and Student Voice
We’ve been thrilled to see so many Year 7 students putting their hand up for SRC roles. While only four could be elected, we’ll be offering further leadership opportunities to support all those interested.
Our school captains travelled to Brisbane for the Halogen Youth Leadership Conference, joining peers from across our Lighthouse Valley Learning Community schools. Monet and Solomon also travelled to Sydney to participate in the Student Leaders Parliament Program, deepening their understanding of democracy and student advocacy.
Our student leaders have also been a part of the Mullumbimby PS and Upper Main Arm PS Student Leadership inductions.
One lovely initiative has been the Year 12 Advice Wall — filled with tips, encouragement, and wisdom to help our Year 7s settle into high school life.
Sport and Co-Curricular Highlights
From futsal to swimming, our students have had a huge term of sport:
- Futsal teams impressed again in regional competitions, continuing our strong tradition in the sport.
- The Swimming Carnival was a showcase of school spirit and individual achievement, with many students reaching personal bests and setting new records.
- Representative selections have been awarded to a number of students across a range of sports—congratulations on your hard work and commitment!
- The Rugby League season has started with a bomb, (pun intended). We have some excellent players in our school teams and several rep players assisting us to get some great wins this season.
I wish all our students, families, and staff a safe and refreshing break. Students are back on Wednesday 30 April 2025 for Term 2. Staff will be involved in two development days.
Please remember if you are getting about on an e-bike (or any bike for that matter) to wear a helmet and keep your brain safe. We know that our region will fill up with a tourist influx, so please take extra care on the busy roads. Term 1 has been full of connection, growth and celebration—I can’t wait to see what Term 2 brings.
Respect | Responsibility | Learning | Bree Harvey-Bice, RELIEVING PRINCIPAL
Muggi Muggi Cultural Day
In Week 10, we had over 150 students from surrounding primary schools that came together for a special Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Muggi Muggi Cultural Day — a vibrant celebration of culture, connection, and community. The event was designed to immerse students in the rich traditions and stories of First Nations peoples through a range of engaging and hands-on activities.
Each Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student invited a friend to share the day with, encouraging friendship, understanding, and shared learning. Together, students took part in five unique cultural experiences including traditional Indigenous dancing, toymaking, art workshops, and traditional Aboriginal games. These activities provided a fun and meaningful way for everyone to learn more about the oldest living cultures in the world.
The art workshops saw students create pieces inspired by Indigenous animals, symbols and storytelling, while the games and dancing brought energy and laughter to the day. The toymaking sessions highlighted traditional crafts and resourcefulness, sparking creativity and appreciation for cultural knowledge passed down through generations.
The Cultural Day was more than just a fun event — it was a powerful opportunity to celebrate identity, learn from each other, and strengthen community ties. Students left with new friendships, new skills, and a deeper appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
Student Leadership
Visit to NSW Parliament
Our School Captains, Monet Shortland and Solomon Wolff, can be spotted in this photo on their visit to Sydney at NSW Parliament House as part of the Secondary Student Leadership Program with Geoff Provest MP. Students from Mullumbimby High School, Kingscliff High School, Banora Point High School and Tweed River High were in attendance.
Each year, student leaders from every NSW secondary school are invited to visit the Parliament and meet their elected representatives. The program, developed and delivered jointly with Government House, recognises the leadership role of the invited students and provides them with an opportunity to meet community leaders, elected representatives and the Governor, and learn about constitutional and parliamentary processes.
Women's Day Breakfast
Our captains Monet and Bonnie showed what a great future Mullumbimby has with our women leaders at The Mullumbimby Chamber of Commerce International Women’s Day Breakfast. Bonnie performed “Say a little prayer” while Monet delivered a powerful speech.
Mullumbimby High School SRC Induction Ceremony
What an incredible team! A huge congratulations to all our newly inducted student representatives. Special thanks to Deputy Mayor Jack Dod for joining us as guest speaker!
Visiting our Feeder Schools
Our Principal, Bree Harvey-Bice was able to attend the SRC induction ceremony at Main Arm School. Maayan and Cleo from the High School were also in attendance as ex students of the primary school.
Our captains shone again at the Mullumbimby Public School's Student Leaders induction. Completing the circle of student leadership, both Monet and Bonnie had been leaders at the school and Matilda and Sol were fantastic representatives becoming part of a new tradition of presenting the captains with their blazers.
This term, Ms Murphy (Transition Adviser) and her trusty team of SSO Cindy, and Year 7 stars Nash, Mya and Zhalia, visited the Year 6 students at Ocean Shores PS, Mullumbimby PS, Brunswick Heads PS and The Pocket PS. We wanted to visit so many more but Ex-Cyclone Alfred threw a spanner in the mix. It was wonderful to meet all of the Year 6s. Our future Year 7s! They're already shaping up to be an excellent addition to our school and we can't wait for next year. Thank you to Cindy, Nash, Mya and Zahlia for your enthusiasm and dedication throughout the visits.

Year 7 Students Shine at STEM Olympiad!
Week 10 of this term was an unforgettable experience for our Year 7 students as they took part in the thrilling biannual STEM Olympiad at Kingscliff High School. Thank you to Mr Colli for taking this group who with 9 teams were representing Mullumbimby High. The competition was fierce, fun, and full of innovation!
The challenges were designed to push the limits of creativity and teamwork. Students got hands-on with block coding drones, navigating them through tricky obstacle courses, and they tackled the engineering challenge of building cranes and scissor lifts while learning the magic of hydraulics. But that’s not all! They also put their minds to work designing futuristic homes for Mars, using AI to solve problems posed by the planet’s extreme conditions.
The competition was tough, but Mullumbimby High students didn’t just participate – they excelled! Our team emerged victorious, claiming the top spot overall. And on top of that, they also won the Southern Cross University Challenge for the best house design – a true testament to their hard work and innovation!
It was an absolute pleasure to take these talented students to represent our school, and I couldn’t be prouder of their achievements. They’ve shown what’s possible when creativity meets teamwork and determination.
Well done, Year 7! You’ve set the bar high for next year’s Olympiad.
Agriculture
It has been another productive term at the MHS Agriculture farm. Attached are images of our year 11 class upskilling their plant production and animal husbandry applications / techniques. Students have been enthusiastically applying themselves using nursery production processes to produce healthy tomato cuttings which are to be transplanted into their vegetable gardens along with other seedlings which have been raised at the school Ag farm. Our sheep and goats have also been well maintained by our students who have been carrying out health checks and administering various treatments such as ‘hoof pairing’ and ‘drenching’. Next term we are looking forward to a visit from a couple of calves from a local farmer, as part of the “Cows Create Careers” Dairy Australia initiative.
TAS (Technology and Applied Science)
We have Year 8 Engineering working hard on their paper rollercoasters, learning all about the fundamentals of engineering and tackling a lot of problem solving challenges along the way. We have test day coming up early in Term 2. The kids are hard at work making sure everything runs smoothly!
Busy term down in the wood workshop! Year 7 are nearly finished learning their foundational woodworking skills by building their very own pencil boxes. "A lot of quality work happening in 7TEC2 and 7TEC5! Xan A and Sienna R's work ethic and attention to detail has been very impressive so far! I see a lot of amazing projects coming from these girls if they keep up this work!" said Mr Madritsch.
Year 12 are also hard at it preparing their timber and cutting joints for their major projects. Next term we'll have a lot of photos to show you when things start getting put together.
Year 6 students in the workshop for their taster day
We also had a visit from a lovely bunch of Year 6 students for their transition to high school day. These guys managed to build their very own custom bag tags made from some local camphor laurel in just 2 periods! Looking forward to seeing these guys in the workshop next year!
Year 8 learn about Materials and Production Processes
This term in Materials and Production Processes, Year 8 students are working on a fun and practical project – designing and making a flat-pack fire pit from mild steel sheet.
Students are learning about the design process, including researching ideas, creating CAD models, and keeping track of their progress in a portfolio. In the workshop, they’re learning how to use tools like tin snips, a guillotine, nibbler, magnabender, scriber, ruler, centre punch, and the drill press to cut and shape their metal safely, with a focus on good WHS practices.
It’s been a great opportunity for students to build their skills while creating something useful.
Year 10 Design & Technology – Custom Skateboard Decks
Our Year 10 Design and Technology students have been rolling through an exciting hands-on project – designing and making their own skateboard decks. Combining creativity with practical skills, students have laminated multiple layers of veneer using vacuum-sealed bags and shaped foam moulds to create the concave and kicks of their boards.
Alongside the construction process, students have been working digitally, manipulating images in the Inkscape program to prepare decorative marquetry designs. These will be laser-cut and applied to the bottom side of the decks, adding a personalised and professional finish.
This project has allowed students to explore both functional design and artistic expression, with some great results already taking shape.
Construction for Year 9 and Year 10 students
In Construction, our Year 9 and 10 students have been busy completing their timber tools project. They’ve been learning to measure and mark out accurately, while making their own timber mallet and cement float. These tasks are helping them build confidence with hand tools and machinery including the tenon saw, scroll saw, jigsaw, disc sander, and bobbin sander.
Students are also practising gluing and clamping techniques, using the timber plane to bevel edges, and applying finishes to their completed tools. To add a personal touch, students have designed and decorated their tools using transfer paper and pyrography pens – creating unique, custom finishes that reflect their individual styles. Safety in the workshop and following WHS guidelines has been a key focus throughout.
These custom-made tools will be put to good use next term, when students take on a new challenge – building a concrete-top coffee table.
Design and Technology for Year 11 students
Year 11 Design and Technology students have recently completed their Designer Case Study task, where they researched a designer connected to their own Major Design Project (MDP) ideas. This helped students gain a deeper understanding of different design processes and inspired approaches they can apply to their own MDP in Year 12.
Students have also begun their Pallet Product – an upcycling task that challenges them to repurpose timber pallets into a creative and functional piece. The focus is on showcasing innovation, sustainability, and an understanding of the design process.
They’ve begun deconstructing pallets, removing nails, and processing the timber through the thicknesser to create usable material. At the same time, students are documenting their ideas in a portfolio and starting the early stages of production in the workshop. We’re looking forward to seeing these original projects come to life throughout Term 2.
Year 7 Digital
In the Year 7 Digital Technology class, students have been introduced to programming and algorithms by developing simple versions of arcade games such as Pong and Pac-Man. This activity served as an introduction to basic programming concepts and logical thinking.
Recently, the students shifted their focus to programming microcontrollers for practical applications. They have created digital step counters and programmed robots to perform specific movements and tasks, applying their coding skills to more functional uses.
Year 9/10 Engineering
The Year 9/10 Engineering students have been engaged in a water tower project, focusing on different truss types and fastening methods. They have used the engineering design process to explore and determine the most suitable techniques for their specific water tower designs.
This project allows students to apply their understanding of engineering principles in a practical context, enhancing their problem-solving and critical thinking skills. It also involves collaborative work, requiring students to coordinate and share responsibilities in designing and testing their projects.
Food Technology
A Tasty Start in Food Technology. It’s been another busy and exciting start to the term in Food Technology!

Highlights included investigating how the body absorbs force—using water balloon tosses to bring the concept to life—and examining the effects of exercise on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. These dynamic lessons have helped students connect theory to real-world movement in a fun and memorable way.
Inclusive Learning
This term in Science, our Junior Support Class has been exploring living things, with a focus on plants. We have germinated and grown some chilli plants from seeds provided by Mr Scott's mum (Thanks Lily!).
We also made some wonderful Grass Heads, by putting grass seed in some tights, followed by potting soil. After tying the bottom and adding some eyes and mouths, they were placed in water cups to await sprouting. And sprout they did! Our collage here shows the initial three weeks of growth, with an after photo once the crew had given their heads a haircut. Among the cuts are a slight trim, a crew cut, a flat top, pony and pigtails, along with a most righteous mullet!
Keeping it playful is a key tenant of our class, and this showed real results in the learning done in this topic!
Outdoor Education
In Term 1, students in Outdoor Education have engaged in a dynamic and challenging program focused on surf awareness, safety, and personal development. They successfully completed their APOLA Surf Survival Certificate, gaining essential knowledge in ocean safety, rips, and rescue techniques. Throughout the term, students participated in practical surfing lessons, improving their board skills and confidence in the surf. Additionally, they were introduced to Wim Hof breathing techniques to help manage stress, improve focus, and enhance their physical performance in cold water environments. The program fostered resilience, teamwork, and a strong understanding of coastal environments and personal safety.
Outdoor Education students also assessed cyclone Alfred’s damage at the lighthouse in Byron. Luckily only a few trees down and the walking track intact! The students discussed the impact of natural events on land and ways we can help minimise our own impacts on land.
Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE)
Term One has been full of exciting learning experiences in all of the HSIE classrooms. Check out what’s been happening below.
Indonesian
It’s been absolutely amazing getting to know all of our new Year 7 students this term in Indonesian! Every student has been so enthusiastic in their learning and they’ve loved exploring Indonesia so far - its culture (we learnt a lot about Ramadan this term), environments, animals, and more!
Students have been completing their introducing Vlogs, Ini Saya, to introduce themselves and share their likes and dislikes in Indonesian, and we can’t wait to share their videos with you in the coming weeks! To complete their assessments, we had to learn lots of new vocabulary including greetings, numbers and hobbies, so we played lots of fun vocabulary games too!
Legal Studies
Year 11 Legal Studies students have been working hard this term, learning the foundations of our legal system, sources of law and how we classify law. They are particularly interested in applying their knowledge of criminal law to modern case studies which is a great tool for them to have as they progress through the course. They have had the opportunity to take on the role of detectives during some of our lessons, working in groups to solve a series of cold-case homicides and kidnappings.
Students are looking forward to the opportunity to visit the District Court House early next term with the hopes of seeing a trial underway! They will also meet with a Legal Aid lawyer who will share their own knowledge and experience of legal personnel and court proceedings. Parents keep an eye out for the permission note via School Bytes.
History Extension
History Extension students have been hard at work exploring historiographical concepts and working on their major work, the History Research Project. Their topics include the romanticisation of ‘the wild west’, the Rum Riots & constructions of Governor William Bligh, contributions of African- American scholars to the historiography of women’s movements, and historiographical constructions of Rosalind Franklin's role in the discovery of DNA!
