Making the most of the sunshine

Prep 4 decided to make the most of the sunshine this week and took their maths lesson outside. As part of their work on identifying and classifying types of angles, they used the semaphore alphabet to send messages to their friends and also identify the type of angle they had made with their arms. Great fun was had alongside some excellent, confident and accurate use of their new mathematical vocabulary - well done Prep 4!

Prep 3 have been forecasting their reflections

Prep 3 children had a fantastic time delving into the concept of reflection and reflective materials during this week's Science lessons. They engaged with a range of reflective materials, using their understanding to forecast and order the materials based on their reflectivity. Following this, they carried out an experiment on the materials using a torch and a reflectivity tester. The pupils evaluated whether their predictions matched the findings of the investigation. Through teamwork, they cooperated effectively to ensure a fair investigation, working together to collect accurate data and draw meaningful conclusions.

A Fencing adventure in Poland..

Over the Easter holidays, Zara Wellman travelled to Poland for a fencing adventure, read all about it from her blog below.

On the last day of the Spring Term I was excited to leave school early to go to an international fencing tournament in Poland - Challenge Wratislavia, where 3000 children from around the world gather to fence in different age groups in foil, epee and sabre. We flew from Bristol on a two-hour flight to Wrocław (pronounced, Vrotslov) and then took a 30-minute taxi to our hotel, Scandic where we met Mr Bromley (Neil).

On Saturday we had a free day and decided to explore and ended up going on a gnome hunt (my favourite gnome was the one with the aeroplane) and we stopped and refilled with delicious donuts, the size of your head (!) along the way.

In the afternoon we took a tram to the Orbita Hall to see where I would be fencing. The three words I would use to describe it are "chaotic, huge, and cool". We returned to the hotel looking forward to the next day when I would be fencing in the hall. Next morning we woke at eight and met Neil whilst eating some melted kit-kat on a croissant for breakfast (it was yummy).

After breakfast we went in a taxi with Neil to the Orbita, registered and got given a goodie bag containing a poster, lanyard and identity sticker for my mask. We then went to find seats and watched the fencers for a bit before we got changed and did a mini warm up with Neil. There were 24 pistes and about 110 girls in my category, 7 in a pool and we were able to look on a special app to see what pool I was in. After a lunch snack, it was time to start. The atmosphere was amazing, busy and I have never seen so many girls all fencing at the same time!

Just before our start time at 1pm, we went to find the piste my pool matches were on. When I got to my piste I went to the judge and registered. In my pool there were girls from Poland, Ukraine, Germany and Turkey but I was I was the only girl from Great Britain. As I was the youngest in the entire competition, the other girls were all at least a year older than me and had more experience in fencing, so my matches were tough, but I tried my hardest and scored lots of points. Sadly I didn't make it through to the elimination stage, but I enjoyed the challenge of competing internationally.

Being part of such a big competition and seeing so many good fencers has made me want to try harder and come back next year and get through.

After fencing we packed up and took the tram back to the hotel, spotting a few more gnomes on the way back. In the evening, we went out for a lovely meal with Neil in the town spare where there was lots going on. I slept very well that night and look forward to coming back to Wroclaw in Year 6.

For anyone who enjoys fencing, I think you would enjoy Challenge Wratislavia, I certainly want to come back next year, fence more and try a few more of their delicious doughnuts!
