A little about me
Julius Shanks II is a senior Acting major and Film Production minor at Howard University, where he has made a significant mark both on and off the stage. This past summer, Julius honed his craft at Tyler Perry Studios in the Post-Production department, gaining valuable industry experience. His recent theatrical work includes performing in The Helen Hayes awarded nominated production of Dance Like Black People are Watching, The Kennedy Center’s production of The Revolution Will Be Improvised, August Wilson’s Seven Guitars at Howard, and a reading of Brown Girl Brown Stone at the Shakespeare Theatre Company. As a leader within the Howard University Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, Julius serves as the President for the 2023-2024 school year and as Mister College of Fine Arts. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Julius was ordained as a minister at just fifteen years old and continues to teach and guide others, balancing his ministry work with his passion for theater.
HOW I GOT HERE
I’ve always known that I wanted to use my talent and gift to spread joy and make a positive impact in the world. Growing up in a place where the arts weren’t widely accepted, I felt a strong calling to break down those barriers. Being a Christian entertainer allows me to not only express myself creatively but also give back to my community by showing others the power of faith, love, and art. This is always my reward in every performance.
My first time acting was in 5th grade at church where I played Emmet Till in the Black History Month program. It was the moment I truly understood what it meant to embody a character and bring someone else’s story to life. This experience opened my eyes to the power of storytelling.
