Mobile Phones

A reminder that NSW Department of Education have banned the use of mobile phones at school.

Mobile phones are to be turned off and out of sight for the duration of the school day. This includes at break times and bus lines at the end of the day.

The school canteen does not accept payment by phones. Students are required to pay for purchases using a card or cash.

In the event of a mobile phone being seen or used, the student will be asked to surrender their phone. It will be then taken to the front office and placed in the safe.

Parents will be contacted and will be required to pick up the phone at the office.

Uniform

Students are expected to be in full school uniform. This includes a dark blue jumper/hoodie for the colder months. This does not need to be a Banora Point HS jumper but must be dark blue.

Bus Bays

There have been some reported issues regarding the bus bay over the past term resulting in a number of unsafe situations.

Please be aware that the bus bays are for buses only before and after school in the designated times. The Australian Road Rules state – Reg 183A driver must not stop in a bus sone unless the driver is driving a public bus. Use of the bays during these times can hinder the buses, cause safety concerns and incur fines ($387, 2 demerit points). Please note that the Police and Rangers do from time to time patrol this area.

Students are also reminded and encouraged to use the pedestrian crossing provided for safety reasons. Students have been witnessed walking across in front of buses and congregating in the bus bay. This is unsafe behaviour and can/has caused concern for the buses and drivers that need to use them.

Please use the pedestrian crossing and move into school grounds promptly.

A group of intrepid students were accompanied by Ms Hargreaves and Mr Duff on the trip of a lifetime to Japan. They spent two weeks exploring cultural and historic sights in Tokyo, Hiroshima, Kyoto and surrounding areas.

Some highlights were seeing Mt Fuji on a crystal clear day, visiting Teamlabs, a digital art gallery, going to DisneySea, dressing up in kimono, seeing the iconic Kinkakuji (the Golden Pavillion) Kiyomizu Temple, Himeji Castle and Arashiyama Bamboo grove.

Students became experts in riding the incredible public transport system, particularly the subway system in Tokyo and were impressed by the shinkansen (bullet train). Everyone loved the food and looked forward to every meal. Ms Hargreaves noted how impressive the students' attitudes were, "They were not afraid to try new things in their travels and were a credit to our school and Australia. Grant Ratcliffe - Community Liaison Officer

As Term 2 draws to a close, it's a perfect time to reflect on the activities and programs that have taken place in our school library. This term, our library has been a hive of activity, serving as a vital resource for students across all year levels. Notably, Year 7 and Year 9 students have benefitted from tailored library lessons focused on reading for enjoyment, designed to foster a love of reading and encourage students to explore a wide range of genres and authors.

One of the standout events this term was the highly successful "Book Speed Dating" activity with Year 9 students. This innovative event engaged students by allowing them to 'speed date' a variety of books across different genres. Each student spent a few minutes with each book, reading excerpts and jotting down their impressions. This fast-paced, interactive approach not only helped students discover new books and genres but also sparked an enthusiasm for reading that many students might not have experienced before. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many students finding new favourite books and expanding their reading horizons.

Our library has also been a bustling hub for our Senior students, especially those focused on their studies, assignments, and exam preparations. The library provides a quiet, supportive environment where students can concentrate, access essential resources, and receive guidance from the Teacher-Librarian. During breaks, the library transforms into a multifaceted space where students can relax, read, play games, and continue their studies. This versatility makes the library an essential part of our school community, catering to a wide range of student needs.

Research consistently shows that reading for enjoyment is crucial for student well-being, literacy, and overall education. Studies have demonstrated that regular reading can improve cognitive function, reduce stress, and enhance empathy and understanding. Moreover, the school library plays a pivotal role in supporting students' educational journeys. As a learning hub, it provides access to a wealth of resources, fosters a collaborative learning environment, and supports the development of critical thinking and information literacy skills. Our library is more than just a place for books; it is a cornerstone of our educational community, dedicated to nurturing and supporting every student's academic and personal growth.

As we look forward to Term 3, we are excited to continue offering engaging programs and resources that inspire a lifelong love of learning and reading. Thank you to all the students and staff who make our library a dynamic and welcoming place.
