Course Reflection
One of the most significant concepts I appreciated learning was glitch art. At the beginning of the school year, I tried to create glitch effects in Adobe Photoshop because I was inspired by my philosophical beliefs, and it tied in perfectly with my cyberpunk aesthetic. It wasn't until my lab professor gained interest and we discussed glitch art that I actually learned about it being a thing, and then we discussed a little bit about the book "Glitch Feminism: A Manifesto" by Legacy Russel. After that, I began looking into glitch art artists and became very intrigued with their work. I especially like that glitch art creates itself naturally; I feel like, for art to manifest itself like that, is rare and goes to show how advanced technology has become and will become. Technology is an art and a blessing if we use it correctly and for the right reasons. Towards the end of the semester, my lecture professor brought up glitch art and mentioned the artists Rosa Menkman and Nam June Paik, artists I had already been researching, and I was excited to learn that what I had been interested in was being taught as a critical concept in our Aesthetics lecture. The most significant technique I learned was how to data bend. I will be creating glitch art by data bending a lot in the next years to come. I'm sure all of my art pieces will now have glitched editions. Overall, I enjoyed this class very much, and I'm very grateful for what I learned and the amazing professors who taught me that. I would especially like to thank my lab professor, who always made sure to take time with me to help me on my projects and always provided valuable feedback.
Final
Proposal
Title: [ <3 ]
Goal: Inspired by the desire to integrate the human element and explore a close-up perspective, I have chosen to feature a self-portrait for my final art project. The canvas of my room serves as the backdrop, seamlessly blending with my aesthetic characterized by cool-toned colors and whimsical futuristic elements. This project is a celebration of fun, a platform to freely express my creativity, and an opportunity to showcase my design skills.
Critical Concepts:
- archive - My own photo
- aesthetics - Incorporating my aesthetic
- editions -Creating multiple pieces
- glitch art - incorporated in editions
- culture - The new Tech Culture/era
- remediation-photo to digital drawing.
Planning:
Over the initial days, my focus will be on refining the first and second editions of the artwork. The first version will undergo skillful editing in Photoshop, while the second edition will come to life as a digital drawing using Adobe Illustrator. As the project progresses over the following days, I will delve into the creation of glitch art editions by duplicating both versions and data bending. This process will yield additional editions, each exploring the captivating realm of visual distortions and digital anomalies. Given the opportunity, I am enthusiastic about expanding this artistic journey by creating more editions, further pushing the boundaries of creative exploration.

Iterations
Culture
The more technologically advanced we become the more advertisments become prevelent. For these iterations I was inspired to create a graphic design style poster and incorporate some topics mentioned in semiotics but also driving on my personal cyberpunk aesthetic which is expressed through the calm and futuristic colors, "errorcodes", fonts with a pixelated style, and eerie symbols. My main concept for this poster is communication. Samet Kessen expresses a sort of cyberpunk aesthetic through their choice on backgrounds, colors, and fonts as well.
Theory
Aesthetics - Contemplation and judgement of sensory expeirences
In my iterations, I actively integrate the foundational concept of aesthetics, channeling my unique cyberpunk-inspired personal aesthetic. This aesthetic is characterized by a fusion of futuristic elements that reflect the evolving nature of our society into a more technologically advanced era. Much like Samet, I express my aesthetic vision distinctly in my works, drawing inspiration from the dynamic interplay between the present and the future. Samet's artistic endeavors serve as a clear demonstration of his commitment to a specific aesthetic, providing inspiration for my own exploration and incorporation of futuristic themes within my creative expressions.
Value - perceived quality, importance, usefulness
Advertisements play a crucial role in the revenue generation of major corporations, representing an integral aspect of our contemporary world and cultural fabric. They pervade every facet of our lives and hold paramount significance. Crafting effective advertisements is contingent upon context, demanding creativity and, at times, adept social skills. Samet Kessen contributes substantial value to his work by possessing the capacity to skillfully create advertisements. His distinctive graphic design style, coupled with a proficient background in graphic design, enhances the impact of his pieces.
I would like to mention, I attempted to mimic Glitch Art (Using errors, often in electronic media, for aesthetic purposes) In my previous iterations from MYTH and REMIX, prior to learning about the subject and how to databend through the program audacity.
Practice
I've utilized the vector tool to craft a diverse shapes, incorporating textures and gradients for added depth and visual appeal. Inspired by Samet Kessen, I've embraced his emphasis on expressive lines and the strategic deployment of gradients. A significant juncture in my creative process occurred when I integrated a photo of my dorm bathed in LED lights, manipulating gradients to fashion a dynamic background. This not only personalized my artwork but also evoked the futuristic aesthetic synonymous with cyberpunk culture. Samet's influence is evident in the purposeful use of symbols, a shared element in our artistic language. The Adobe toolkit serves as our common creative foundation, through the strategic use of vectors, gradients, and symbolic elements.

Inspiration
Nam June Paik - performance and technology based art
This was before our AESTHETICS Lecture
Additionally
In relation, I have also created this sculpture.
Iterations
Culture
My personal aesthetic seamlessly blends the realms of technology and humanity, harmonizing both cool and warm tones. It draws inspiration from the iconic artist Nam June Paik, who masterfully incorporates television and media into his sculptures, interweaving them with soothing and tranquil colors to evoke a sense of serenity and an intriguing, slightly eerie atmosphere, mirroring the essence of my own aesthetic.
Theory
Mimesis - representations that mimic the real world.
Remediation - incorporation or representation of one medium in another medium
Nam June Paik expertly channels Mimesis in his video art, creating a mesmerizing imitation of nature. His unique touch? Combining technology and art. Following in his footsteps, I dive into Mimesis, shaping a digital piece from a real-world photo. Enter Remediation—my fusion of photography and digital art that transforms the ordinary into the the final iteration. And then, graffiti, an artistic remix echoing our REMIX Lecture.
Practice
In the first iteration, I started the process by utilizing the vector tool to outline and trace the photograph. To refine the lines and curves, I used the black and white selection tool to methodically adjust the anchors and paths. Then, I used the eyedropper and live paint tool to carefully fill in the shapes with colors sampled from the original photograph. Lastly, I accessed the effects gallery in the third iteration to enhance the overall aesthetic with a more lifelike appearance.
REMIX
Inspiration
Daniel Temkin - "makes photography, programming languages, net art, and paintings examining the clash between systemic logic and human irrationality."
I strongly suggest checking his website for a deeper understanding of his works.
Iterations
I explore the notion of an alternate reality in which a superior entity possesses the ability to teleport and observe the unfolding events simultaneously. Employing my unique aesthetic palette, I still aim to evoke a sense of calmness, knowledge, and wisdom.
Culture
In my REMIX iterations, I use my personal aesthetic by using glitches to convey the essence of simulated life, unique realities, and the often unseen spiritual forces—paralleling the themes explored in MYTH iterations. I've meticulously chosen colors that not only reflect my individual style but also invoke a compelling juxtaposition of tranquility and chaos. Daniel Tempkin, an exceptional artist, shares my belief that computers themselves are a form of art, and he seamlessly intertwines technology and artistic expression in his work, particularly within the realm of glitch art that resonates deeply with my "cyberpunk aesthetic." Furthermore, just like me, he adopts a philosophical approach in his exploration of the interplay between systemic logic and human irrationality, further enriching the depth of his artistry.
Theory
Technology - any invention or idea that improves life
Remix Culture - The tendency to emulate, appropriate, and rework creations
I embraced Remix Culture by fusing distinct images from Cottonbro Studios, enhancing them with glitch effects and a color transformation. My inspiration for the project stemmed from the concept of a "higher being" overseeing two realms, signifying my belief in the future of technology. I envision that technology will advance to a point where we can explore astral projection and gain deeper insights into the nature of existence and spiritual entities. Daniel Tempkin seamlessly intertwines technology with art, crafting a body of work where the boundaries between the two blur, resulting in a unique fusion of technological and artistic expression.
Practice
My workflow for the REMIX iterations began with extending the canvas and duplicating the background, which was flipped vertically to introduce complementary colors, signifying alternate realities. Utilizing the marquee tool, I replicated the concept from MYTH for unique effects. To distinguish the two realities, I adjusted brightness and altered colors. I enhanced the ethereal aspect of the "Higher Being" by adding transparency and noise to its layers. I also carefully selected glitch colors to create an asymmetrical balance and convey motion. In the 3rd REMIX iteration, I stepped out of my comfort zone, employing tools like the clone stamp, brush, and different colors, and oversaturating layers in the levels menu to produce captivating, glitchy effects.
Growth from Feedback
During the critique, I realized my reluctance to step out of my comfort zone in Photoshop. I used to believe it should mirror traditional art, but I've now embraced the idea that digital art offers more creative freedom. Previously, I confined my work to strict structures, but I'm now committed to exploring a more expressive approach. This transition will take time, but in my latest REMIX iteration, I applied this feedback to create a more dynamic and expressive piece.
MYTH
Inspiration
Patrick O'Keefe - Illustrator and Art Director
Commonly know for Spiderman Into the Spider-verse and Big Hero 6: The Series
Iterations
As you are walking through the city you notice something feels off, colors are more vibrant, your vision is starting to get blurred, pixels are forming in the distance; maybe your traveling to a new reality? What lies beneath the surface of our perceived reality? My Idea for The concept behind MYTH is that we don’t choose the path we want to take. The details around us can be so minuscule but pay close enough attention and you might begin to see the world shift around you.
Culture
Patrick O'Keefe's creative vision draws in viewers with a sense of tranquility, a bittersweet yet enchanting nostalgia, and an ability to transport one's emotions to alternate realms. This quality is prevalent in works like "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" where the narrative goes into the multiverse, immersing audiences in a kaleidoscope of parallel universes. My personal aesthetic, in contrast, aspires to conjure an electrifying sense of enthusiasm and inner peace within the present moment while simultaneously evoking feelings of nostalgia. in my MYTH assignment, I attempted to offer glimpses into the perspective of an individual unknowingly traversing the boundaries of reality, a theme often associated with a deeper understanding of existence. i aimed to convey how the future is intrinsically lined to a heightened awareness, crafting a visual narrative that encapsulates the synergy between the present and the future associated with elevated knowledge.
Theory
Culture - the human development of knowledge, beliefs, and behaviors that depend upon social learning
Mythology - a collection of culturally specific narratives that support and validate a culture.
Patrick O'keefe uses Culture and Mythology in the pictures shown above by showing an urbanized culture and what some assume the future to look like. I Incorporated the critical concepts of Culture and Mythology by using those same styles. I wanted choose a picture that perfectly shows an urban environment and with the glitch and pixelated effects evoking the idea of teleportation and dimension traveling; that is often associated with myth of what we might be capable of in the future.
Practice
Paying close attention to my final MYTH iteration, there is a blurred and pixelated background that almost sort of fades away, there is also some glitches in the corners. The faded background is seen in Patrick O'keefe's work as well and as far as the glitches he adds this sort of glitch/halo effect around subjects in Spiderman Into the Spider-Verse. I did this by using the clone stamping tool and changing the blending modes. For the glitches I use the rectangular marquee tool and colorfilled them to my liking and applied blending modes. Additionally, I played with wind filters.
Personal Aesthetic Statement
I find solace amidst the neon-lit serenity of my sanctuary, where a white desk covered with wires and controllers serves as my creative cockpit. Amidst the ethereal blues and pinks that wash over my realm, I take a break from the digital world of gaming and gaze upon a cityscape below, where the sun's descent paints the sky in hues reminiscent of cotton candy and wisps of smoke. As the city symphony unfurls below, with distant car horns, melodic tunes, and bass vibrations weaving together, I am serenaded by the laughter of children, the murmurs of adult conversations, and the gentle cadence of life's ebb and flow. A notifcation on my phone becomes my portal to techno-futuristic soundscapes, evoking the sensation of water's tender embrace. Meanwhile, the flickering light beneath my door reveals a neighbor's spirited celebration, and as I look out my window some more, I am greeted by a diligent spider spinning its web, a weather car in the parking lot, and the remnants of chipped paint on the walls- a testament to the enduring echoes of the past. In this very moment, a profound sense of tranquility washes over me, and I revel in the present while eagerly anticipating the changes that lie ahead. Throughout my life, I've embraced transformations that have shaped me, bestowing strength and wisdom. Change has nurtured acceptance of the past, gratitude for the present, and enthusiasm for the future. In the face of the unknown, I choose to embrace it wholeheartedly. As an artist, I find endless beauty and potential in our evolving world, welcoming the future with open arms. It is a future filled with wonders yet to be unveiled, and I am ready to discover them all.
