Career Day: FLAHS Alumni Present Career Fields to Students

These FLAHS alumni presented on aviation, computer science, mechanical engineering, and economics as career fields.

Jackson Auge - Civil Engineering

For the past year, I have known that I wanted to pursue a career as a civil engineer. Career Exploration Days helped me decide. My dad, who is a civil engineer for Anoka County, attends and shares information about the career field. Between his sessions and conversations at home, I know it is the right field for me. It is common for us to discuss how projects develop from ideas to inception to completion at the dinner table.

Jackson will be attending the University of North Dakota in the fall to study civil engineering. Although engineering runs in the family, Jackson still took advantage of every opportunity at FLAHS to discover if it was the right fit for him. In particular, Intro to CAD, Engineering I, and his independent study in engineering provided him ample opportunity to develop and put his creative design skills into practice. Jackson is seen here holding his model bridge that held over 200 lbs!

Mati Tuil - Animal Science

Taking CIS Animal Science was the most impactful in helping me decide that I want to become a veterinarian. Being a vet has been my dream job since I was little. My experience in CIS Animal Science helped me dive into many aspects of vet science from genetics to nutrition. Going to the University of MN, as part of the class experience, to conduct labs made me certain that animal science is the path for me.

Mati will be attendig Iowa State University in the fall to pursue a degree in animal science on the pre-vet track. Through her experiences with Career Exploration Days, Mati learned all about the importance of having many varied experiences with animals to be successful on the pre-vet track. This year, Mati interned at Muddy Paws after taking Career Launch Explore. Mati credits Career Launch Explore with getting her prepared for the internship hiring experience by creating a solid resume and cover letter.

Hailee Moua - Marketing

Out of all the business classes I took at FLAHS, I enjoyed Intro to Marketing the most. It was in that class that I had the most fun because I got to be creative with my projects. I've been interested in Marketing since my 9th Grade Career Exploration Day session I attended with a marketer from Burger King. That experience broadened my understanding of marketing. It is something that I could do anywhere.

Hailee will be attending the University of MN's Carlson School of Management in the fall to pursue a degree in Marketing. Hailee's leadership, strong academics, and clear career goals helped with her acceptance into Carlson. As the Hmong Asian Club Vice President, Hailee has pushed herself to create relationships broadly with the greater student body. Those leadership and collaboration skills are paying off!

Anthony Tower - Nursing

I've always wanted to help people. It was until after I met Jody and Traci that I knew I wanted to do so in the healthcare field. By the end of the year, I'll have earned my CNA, EMR, and EMT. Those certifications helped me get a job at Ebenezer, which has given me the opportunity to practice bedside care and see some incredible things. Just yesterday, I saw a wound vac get changed.

Anthony will be attending Winona State University in the fall to pursue a degree in nursing. He is able to enter his program of study confidently knowing that he has fully explored the profession. Anthony has taken advantage of nearly every opportunity in the Career Launch Pathway....Courses, certifications, college credit, healthcare career camp, hospital career field trips, and HOSA member. Anthony can bee seen here working on a simulation of removing polyps in the lungs.

Lucia Stene - Elementary Education

My parents always told me I would be a teacher some day. As a second grader, I would pull out my whiteboard and teach my siblings. My experience in Youth Teaching Youth (a UMN Extension Program) solidified that interest. With YTY, I have been able to teach elementary school students in a variety of our area elementary schools. It can be challenging, but it is what I love.

Lucia will be attending the University of Northwestern (St. Paul) in the fall to pursue a degree in Elementary Education. Over her high school years, Lucia has had her eye on education. The course Childhood of Psychology helped her understand how to teach very young students. As a senior, she is now a teacher's assistant for that class and is taking our new CIS Exploring the Teaching Profession course. By attending the Career Exploration Day Education Panels, Lucia has learned from her own teachers what it means to pursue the profession; and she is sold!
