Unpublished Illustrations
Throughout the past two semesters, our illustrators have worked tirelessly to bring us content. Here is a look at some of our illustrations that never made it to the website.
Opinion Comics
Illustrators also had the opportunity to express themselves by creating comics. These comics included a range of topics from student life to public figures. Here is one such comic made by Caitlin Hawkinson!
Favorite Illustrations
Finally, we'd like to give our illustrators a chance to show us some of their favorite pieces. With the expectation of up to 2-3 illustrations a week, our artists have worked hard to bring our reporters' stories to life.
"I enjoyed creating this illustration not only because it accompanied an article by Alysa Horton but also because it gave me a lot of room for creativity. Illustrations with a variety of elements are also some of my favorites because it challenges you to work on composition and color to make a busy piece cohesive and visually pleasing." -Morgan Kubasko
"Raving is a huge part of my life, so when I was asked to help with a variety of articles featuring the Arizona rave scene, I was ecstatic. I love this illustration because it features some of my favorite parts of rave culture and allowed for State Press readers to get a better look inside the beauty of the scene." -Morgan Kubasko
"This illustration was a fun challenge since I had to depict both Trump himself and Sebastian Stan dressed up as Trump, while keeping the two distinguishable. I enjoyed finding creative solutions to this ,like by having the setting be a theater, and exaggerating their unique features." -Caitlin Hawkinson
"I had a lot of creative freedom for this illustration, and I really like the colors and composition I went with. I enjoy character design, so I had fun creating a unique look for each person in the band." -Caitlin Hawkinson
"I loved illustrating this piece because it let me explore how visual elements like symbols and color can reflect a character’s inner world. The author’s (Pippa Fung) connection to books, music, and pop culture came through so clearly, and bringing that to life visually was a really fun challenge." -Neha Ponnapalli
"This was one of my favorite illustrations to work on because it pushed me out of my comfort zone. I had never drawn anything biomechanical before, but experimenting with the mix of organic forms and mechanical textures helped me grow so much in both style and storytelling." -Neha Ponnapalli
"This is one of my favorite illustrations because of the amount of detail I was able to include I think there’s a lot of 'life' in this illustration compared to my other pieces." -Ella Jacquez
"I like this photo illustration because it was my first time being able to do one of these. Devs is a historic place for ASU students and it was cool being able to be a part of this story written about it and witnessing it before they turn it into a new housing building." -Ella Jacquez
"I adore Kendrick Lamar as an artist. His music is incredibly vulnerable, well made, and he inspires me as a creative! So being able to make an illustration for his 2024 album was so much fun! I was reached out to to take on this project and given full creative freedom. I took inspiration from his album cover and visuals throughout the GNX era. It was a piece I never would have been pushed to make on my own." -Brittany Lane
"This piece is stylistically so different from anything I’ve created before. One of my favorite parts of the job is being able to try out so many styles and looks in my work! The exaggerated proportions, clean lines, and fun prints really make it stand out to me. It’s always going to be a work that I look back at quite fondly." -Brittany Lane
"I had a great time coming up with the color scheme for this illustration! Since it was my last one for the semester, I wanted to try something new, so I experiemented with a funky set of colors. It was a lot of fun, from sketching the pose to choosing the colors." -Sarah Pedrini
"Like a lot of people, I grew up playing Minecraft, so this piece was a fun nostalgia trip! I had also seen the movie right before making this, and wanted to include a few of the meme references." -Sarah Pedrini
