Archer Western powers ahead on the expansion of Arcadia Lake WTP

Edmond, Oklahoma - Archer Western powers ahead on the $191 million expansion of the Arcadia Lake Water Treatment Plant. The City of Edmond reports approximately 70% of the underground concrete has been placed for the new high lift pump station that will pump treated water to the city residents and businesses. The granular activated carbon (GAC) filter building slab pours are being completed and the walls are being formed. The GAC filters will reduce the potential for disinfection byproducts when chlorine is added to the water.

Both of the four-million-gallon clearwell tank concrete floors, interior baffle walls, exterior walls and dome are placed, with work continuing on the exterior concrete coating. The recycle pump station steel piles have been driven for structural support, and crews are excavating the lower wetwell section to start placing structural concrete in the next couple of months.

Walsh leads Phase 2 of Ohio State Biomedical and Materials Engineering Complex

Columbus, Ohio - The Biomedical and Materials Engineering Complex – Phase 2 is under construction on The Ohio State University campus. Walsh Construction is leading the $94.3 million project that will renovate the existing MacQuigg Hall and construct an addition that will ultimately deliver the new home of first-year engineering courses, makerspace, biomedical and advanced materials R&D and engaging K-12 STEM programs. The project included the demolition of Watts Hall and renovates existing MacQuigg Hall. An addition will be constructed that will house research and teaching labs, collaboration spaces, offices and classroom space.

Archer Western delivering improvements to Pierce-Burch Water Treatment Plant

Arlington, Texas - Archer Western crews are building a Pierce-Burch Water Treatment Plant Chemical, Clearwell and Pump Station Improvements Project.

The $112.5 million project will help increase the plant’s capacity and reliability for residents. Construction involves a new high service pump station, two new clearwells, a new chemical storage and feed facility, two new electrical power distribution buildings, new filter wash/recycle basins, new stormwater facilities, miscellaneous piping and site improvements and backup generators to aid the facility.

Marquee pour performed for I-290/I-88 Interchange Project at I-294

Hillside, Illinois - Walsh Construction pours a new pier cap over the entrance ramp connecting I-88 to I-294/I-290; a marquee pour for the I-290/I-88 Interchange Project at I-294. The cap measures 100 feet long, 11 feet wide, and 12.75 feet tall and weighs approximately 2.2 million pounds. In a 12-hour shutdown of the ramp and lanes on I-88, crews poured 513 cubic yards on a formwork system that spanned 55 feet.

This formwork system required multiple months of design and a month and a half to build. After a two-to-three-week cure period, the cap will be post tensioned and the girders for the new 600-foot bridge over I-88 will be set. This entrance ramp is the Illinois Tollway's busiest, a daily connection for 300,000 cars to the interchange.

Orem Water Reclamation Facility receiving new tertiary treatment facility

Orem, Utah - Archer Western is building a tertiary treatment facility for the provision of reuse water and the removal of phosphorus from the Orem Water Reclamation Facility effluent. The facility will include chemical storage and feed, rapid mix, cloth media disk filters, a chlorine contact basin and a reuse water pump station. Currently on site:

  • Cellular clay block walls are complete
  • CCB elevated slabs are 50% complete
  • Effluent filter walls are 85% complete
  • Under slab 20”-48” Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar is installed

Demolition begins on Wasena Bridge

Roanoke, Virginia - Demolition of the 86-year-old Wasena Bridge is underway, part of a $50 million bridge replacement project. Archer Western is managing the project and the demolition, which involves removing over 17.5 million pounds of concrete and steel. By the end of 2024, the demolition will be complete, with cranes being utilized to remove debris near the river and railroad tracks.

Concurrently, preparations for the new bridge are underway, with pile driving for the new foundations set to begin in late June. The new Wasena Bridge is anticipated to reopen to traffic in Spring 2026.

Peek inside the OSU Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Hospital

Columbus, Ohio - As more than 800 crew members make their way onto the construction site each morning, the Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Hospital construction is nearly 80% complete. Currently, Walsh Construction and Turner Construction are working to connect the ground, first and second floors from The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC-James) to the new inpatient tower.

Santa Monica takes giant leap forward in water independence

Santa Monica, California - The City of Santa Monica needed an immediate solution to reduce its reliance on imported water, develop sustainable water supplies and increase groundwater production. Walsh Construction and Brown and Caldwell have delivered the $72 million Arcadia WTP expansion, via progressive-design build delivery, which increases treatment capacity with a novel high recovery reverse osmosis system and a newly designed Olympic Advanced Water Treatment Facility. The City of Santa Monica can now produce more finished drinking water with less waste being discharged to the sewer. Learn more about the journey to water independence in the video above.

Archer Western working across 26 miles to construct DART Silver Line

North Texas - Working mightily across 26 miles in North Texas, Archer Western and Herzog are building DART Silver Line, the new transit connection that will extend from DFW Airport to Plano. From transit and pedestrian bridge work to track installation, civil work and station construction, Archer Western Herzog is creating the infrastructure that will improve mobility, accessibility and system linkages in the northern part of the DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) Service Area.

DART reports that passengers can expect Silver Line revenue service to begin in late 2025 to early 2026, with vehicle testing beginning later this year.

Walsh Construction begins comprehensive renovation of Island Terrace Apartments

Chicago, Illinois - Walsh Construction and joint venture partner GMA Construction Group joined Senator Dick Durbin and officials from the Illinois Housing Development Authority and the Department of Housing and Urban Development for a ceremony to commence renovations at the Island Terrace Apartments in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood.

The 21-story residential building will receive additional affordability provisions through nonprofit developer, the Preservation of Affordable Housing. The project consists of the renovation of 240 residential units, common areas and offices, while also adding a new 2,600-square-foot addition and enhancement of the exterior façade. This will be the first comprehensive renovation to Island Terrace Apartments since its opening nearly 50 years ago. The construction project is anticipated to be complete in late 2025.

Miraculous Medal Tradition continues at first pour for Sunnyvale WPCP

Sunnyvale, California - Looking overhead as we place Miraculous Medals in the first concrete pour for the Secondary Treatment and Dewatering Project at the Sunnyvale Water Pollution Control Plant. The $278 million project will improve various components of the treatment process and meet anticipated future regulatory requirements. Walsh Construction will build conventional activated sludge facilities, which will be the main method to provide secondary treatment.

Walsh making strides on Digested Sludge Dewatering Facility

San Jose, California - Walsh Construction continues to make strides across all areas of work on the Digested Sludge Dewatering Facility. Crews have completed structural steel erection and coating, marking a critical step towards facility readiness. Sludge Storage Tanks 1 and 2 have finalized hydrotesting, with ongoing excavation around the tanks to prepare for underground piping and electrical conduits. Walsh also achieved a major milestone of the successful completion of horizontal directional drilling with crews pulling seven pipes under Zanker Road.

The new dewatering building will house mechanical dewatering equipment, dewatered cake storage, conveyance and truck load-out facility, chemical feed station, pump station to return centrate to headworks, operations and maintenance space and storage and associated mechanical, electrical and instrumentation equipment.

Miami, Florida - The first of six towering arches for the Miami I-395 Signature Bridge has been connected at the top, and a final concrete pour at the end of this month will secure its last section.
Peoria, Arizona - Work continues on Phase 2 of the Jomax Water Reclamation Facility Expansion. Crews at the Solids Handling Building have completed the structural steel for bridge crane, installed the south horizontal conveyor structural steel support, completed centrifuge supports and will install the bridge crane this month.
Louisville, Kentucky - Crews secure the flag on the side of the Louisville VA Medical Center to honor those who gave their lives for freedom.
South Bend, Indiana - On the Beacon Bed Tower site, a mobile crane was used to set the Tower Crane Base. The Tower Crane when fully erected will have a hook height of 212 feet and be capable of lifting 18,100 lbs. at the tip of the jib.
Chicago, Illinois - Continuing to progress on the new CTA RPM track structure, while pouring beneath the new bypass.
Columbia, South Carolina - Crews place girders onto the straddle bent on a new exit ramp on Phase 1 of Carolina Crossroads Project. A total of six girders will be used to construct this span.
South Bend, Indiana - Volunteers from the Beacon Memorial Redevelopment project participated in the Sunburst Race – 5k Walk that directly supports Beacon Children’s Hospital. Walsh was also a corporate tent sponsor for the event.
McDonough, Georgia - Archer Western expanding the Walnut Creek Waste Water Pollution Control Plant. Once construction is complete, the water capacity will increase from 8 MGD to 14 MGD.
Mercer Island, Washington - Walsh Construction crews install the pipe run and do T-cuts and permanent paving while conducting pressure testing between structures and landscape restoration at the North Mercer Island Interceptor & Entail Interceptor Upgrade Conveyance.
Virginia Beach, Virginia - The Archer Western Deep Creek Bridge Replacement team in Virginia Beach volunteers at the annual Clean the Bay event. They spent the day removing harmful litter and debris from the Chesapeake Bay watershed to help the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in its mission to Save the Bay.
Cumming, Georgia - Archer Western crews work on Phase 2 of the Fowler Water Reclamation Facility Expansion Project. Once complete, treatment capacity will increase from 5 MGD to 7.5 MGD, including expansion of existing facilities and construction of new structures to house MBR equipment and support systems.
Flower Mound, Texas - Archer Western removes the tower crane from 3111 Sunset, the latest sign of progress at the 16-story luxury residential tower.
