Canbury School Newsletter 7th March 2025. ISSUE 361

Dear Families, Friends, Students and Staff.

Mrs Rich

What a whirlwind week it's been! The energy and enthusiasm within our school have been truly remarkable. From the vibrant experiences at The Tate, where our students explored the world of art, to the imaginative costumes and literary celebrations of World Book Day, our students have been immersed in enriching experiences this week.

Our sporting prowess was also on full display with a thrilling triumph on the football pitch, a testament to the dedication and teamwork of our players.

Beyond these exciting events, we were particularly impressed by the student-led assembly today on personal hygiene, a topic requested by school council and delivered with such maturity and thoughtfulness, demonstrating the power of our student council and their ability to drive positive change.

We look forward to sharing more about these fantastic events below.

KS4 Boys’ Football Match Report

Canbury Stags 10 - Link School 7

A beautiful early Spring afternoon saw the Canbury Stags lock horns with the Link School to start a busy period of fixtures for the team. It was a competitive and physical match from the first whistle with the Stags going into half-time leading by a solitary goal. Things got even closer in the second half, with the scores being tied 7-7 at the end of the third quarter. In the end, Canbury’s fitness and ruthlessness in front of goal was decisive. A special mention must go to Sam, who put in an extremely assured performance on his debut for the team. - Mr Barnes

What a team effort!

Next week for the team, an away fixture down in West Sussex at New Barn School.

Students "Totally Immersed" in Tate Modern's 'Electric Dreams'

Years 10, 11 and 12 Art and photography students went to visit the Tate Modern to see the fantastic ‘Electric Dreams - Art and Technology before the internet’ exhibition. From the birth of optical art to the dawn of the internet age, artists found new ways to engage the senses and play with our perception. Electric Dreams celebrates the early innovators of optical, kinetic, programmed and digital art, who pioneered a new era of immersive sensory installations and automatically-generated works. The students were totally immersed in this experience!

A massive well done to Morgan, Brendan, Kit, Eliot, Evan and Ethan for being engaged and showing enthusiasm for learning throughout the day and Layla H and Frankie for being resilient and independent.

It was an enjoyable experience and the students wanted to see even more art even after seeing three exhibitions! They also captured some wonderful photos of London in the beautiful sunshine. #ArtsAmbassadors

Do check out these exhibitions next time you are in London:

World Book Day

Mrs Eynon's favourite day in the school calendar arrived in style this week. Our school hallways transformed into a vibrant tapestry of beloved characters and literary landscapes as we celebrated World Book Day in spectacular style!

The day kicked off with a dazzling display of literary fancy dress. From a mischievous Cheshire Cat and a heroic Harry Potter to the Bulgarian flag, the creativity was boundless! Students and staff alike embraced the spirit of the day, bringing their favourite book characters to life.

The competitive spirit soared during our book-themed house literary matching game. Teams from each house battled it out, testing their knowledge of classic and contemporary literature, racing to match characters and text from iconic works.

Excellent team work on show

A delightful twist on a classic tale awaited students during the day: the "Hunt the Hungry Caterpillar" food trail. Hidden throughout the school were delectable treats, each representing a stage in the caterpillar's colourful journey.

Adding to the literary excitement, our teachers shared their personal favourite books, offering a glimpse into their own reading passions. And rounding out with some literary themed lunchboxes.

A broad selection of genres on show by our staff

The day was a resounding success, reminding us all of the magic that books hold. We hope the enthusiasm for books sparked on this day will continue throughout the year!

The Great Food Breakdown: A Digestive Demonstration

Forget textbooks and diagrams! Year 9 got a front-row seat to the incredible journey of food through the human body in a truly "digestible" demonstration. We didn't just talk about the four stages of digestion—ingestion, digestion, absorption, and elimination—we showed them! Students watched as Mrs Anjum took them through a hilarious demonstration of breaking down food into its molecular building blocks.

A digestive system demo that delivered!
