Highlights of the week
We have had an absolutely monumental week here at school, filled with historic sporting triumphs and high-profile national visitors. We kicked off Monday morning with a very special celebratory assembly to honour the incredible achievements of our school football teams. Both our Boys and Girls teams recently made history by qualifying for the finals of the HMS Shield, a prestigious Birmingham-wide tournament. Our Girls team played an absolutely phenomenal, hard-fought match in their final. While they unfortunately came away with a narrow 1-0 loss, we could not be prouder of them—they are officially the second-best girls' team in the whole of Birmingham! Meanwhile, our Boys team put on a masterclass in their final, securing a magnificent 4-0 victory and bringing a beautiful new trophy back to our display cabinet. Remarkably, that wasn't the boys' only silverware recently. On the Sunday just before the start of term, the team travelled to St Andrew's stadium to compete in the Vertu Cup, a massive competition covering the entire West Midlands region. The boys played some truly fantastic football against the best teams in the region and went on to win the entire tournament! A huge congratulations to both teams and their coach, Mr Smith for a historic haul of silverware. On Monday, we were incredibly honored to welcome Dame Rachel de Souza, the Children’s Commissioner for England, to our school. Dame Rachel visited us as a guest of SAMPAD, a wonderful South Asian arts group. She used her time here to speak directly with our pupils to gather their views and promote her major national survey, The Big Future. Our children spoke eloquently and represented the school beautifully. You may have even caught a glimpse of some familiar faces on television or in print, as the visit received fantastic media coverage on ITV News and in the Birmingham Mail! Finally, I want to share some bitter-sweet news as we extend a huge congratulations to two fantastic members of staff who have secured exciting new promotions for the upcoming academic year. First, we send our warmest congratulations to Mrs. Mallard, who has been an integral part of our school community for an incredible 20 years. In September, she will be stepping into an exciting new role as Deputy Headteacher at St Matthew’s Research School. We also say a proud well done to Miss Brereton, who has secured a wonderful new teaching post at a school in London. While we will miss them all immensely when September arrives, we wish them the absolute best as they take these next big steps in their careers. Thank you all for your continued support in making our school community such a vibrant and successful place to learn. Have a wonderful weekend!

On Monday we welcomed the children’s commissioner for England to school, Dame Rachel de Souza. She came to see the East Asian drama group, SAMPAD, working with 5BM. She spoke to the children at length about their views of being a child in England and what messages they would like her to take back to the government. The children then appeared on ITV local news and in the local paper. They were true ambassadors for our school.
Colmore Junior School will be having French morning on Thursday 18th June to celebrate the fantastic work our children have been producing in their language lessons this year. Children are invited to pay 50p to dress up for the day. They can choose the colours of the French flag (Red, White and Blue), a famous French speaker, or something they have learnt to say in French. Money raised will be put towards the school fund. During the morning children will be exploring French culture and taking part in traditional activities and games.
The Fire Service arrived to work with year 4 this week. They talked about fire safety in the home and what to do if they were faced with fire on their clothing. They also talked about safety around water and how to stay afloat when in a dangerous situation.
Next week is Word Play week at Colmore. We will be inviting a whole host of children’s authors in to school to talk to year groups about their books. We will also be taking part in creative activities from the specially created Wordplay books. If you would like your child to purchase a signed copy of any of the books please follow the links below.

Two superstars have spent quite some time putting together this wonderful school newspaper! They copied them and shared them amongst friends. It was such high quality it just had to be shared!
