Produce Donations
“Oh where to begin???? Thank you to the many, many volunteers who packed up TWO full semi trucks of fresh fruits and vegetables at the annual Southeast Produce Council, Inc.’s Southern Exposure food show. We worked hard and laughed hard. We worked for a bigger purpose - feeding those in need. People experiencing hunger will have the opportunity to eat the prettiest, freshest, most delicious produce that too many Floridians do not have access to.
Thank you His Compassion Food Bank for donating two semi-trucks for FOUR days to transport and store the food to keep it cold and fresh. Thank you to Mack Farms who took on the challenge of receiving and storing the food until it was ready to head to the show. Not an easy job! Finally, a huge thank you to the SEPC exhibitors who graciously donated their food to those in need."

The Southeast Produce Council, along with our co-sponsor, The Produce News, are proud to honor Kent Kuwata with our highest honor, the Terry Vorhees Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was presented to Kent during the Keynote Brunch on Saturday, March 8th, at Southern Exposure 2025.
Kent Kuwata has been in the produce business all of his life. He started at the tender age of five helping his grandparents with their produce business. Going to the LA Market before sunrise with all the hustle and bustle was always exciting. He actually learned to drive a tractor on his uncle’s farm in Hawaii. He spent many summers in Hawaii taking his grandmother home to visit family.
After high school he began working for Vons Market where he started as a produce clerk, then a producer manager. He also was a setup manager and had a team in charge of new store and older store remodels. After which he became a buyer and a merchandiser. He changed directions and went back to the stores a manager. He stayed with Vons / Pavilion / Safeway for 24 years.
Kent then joined Gigante Supermarket for five years, a chain that was run out of Mexico, as their Director of Produce and Hot Bakery. Here he learned diplomacy and travelled regularly to Mexico. He initiated a contract for “masa” from the US to Mexico.
Now it was time for change, Kent went to work for a Los Angeles based wholesaler. They supplied produce to high end restaurants locally and also to the Las Vegas casinos. These were interesting times bringing berries “out of season” for a high roller to Las Vegas, way before South American fruits and vegetables became main stream.
He has spent the last 18 years with Smart & Final as a Category Manager. His primary responsibilities include category sales, selection and P&L for the division.
Kent is a high school graduate and attended 3 years of college. He enjoys spending time traveling with his wife, who has been his soulmate for over 47 years. They have two daughters Christine 39, Ashley 36, son-in-law Michael 39. For the past 7 years they have spent their spare weekends in San Diego visiting their grandsons, Kiyoshi 7, Daikichi 6, Takeshi 1 1/2. Their youngest grandson Eiji 6 months was born in Indiana where they now reside. They are the joys in his life.
Kent was awarded the prestigious Norman H. Bolstad Achievement Award in 2014 from the Fresh Produce & Floral Council.

Together, they have built a life grounded in family, which has been a central part of Mike’s story from the very beginning. They have a strong and cherished bond, raising their three children—daughters Nicole and Angela and son Michael—who have brought them immense joy and pride.
