Welcome back! Week 1

We welcomed back Year 1 this week with some fantastic new learning!

In History, the children have been discovering why people who have made history in the past are so important still today. We spoke about people who have made famous firsts such as Usian Bolt, Mae Jamison and the Wright brothers and spoke about how/why their legacy still lives on today.

Afterwards, we spent the week learning about Bessie Coleman, who was the first ever black female pilot. The children were shocked when they found out about how Bessie was not able to become a pilot for a very long time because of her skin colour and gender - this sparked a lovely discussion how this wasn’t fair. We then spoke about how Bessie Coleman inspired so many black women to reach their goals in life no matter what. ❤️

We captured Bessie’s phenomenal story on a historical timeline in our books.

Two lovely members of our class enjoyed some fun exploring this week!

On Thursday, we celebrated World Book day with one of our favourite books: Zog! We enjoyed reading it together and some activities linked to the story afterwards.

We even enjoyed a fun PE lesson outside, where we had our first glimpse of Spring weather!

Well done for a fantastic week Year 1!
