Project Description:

Previously the home of JMU men’s and women’s basketball, the vacated Convocation Center presented the university with a unique opportunity to create a multipurpose hub for athletic programs spread across campus, while freeing up much-needed academic space in the heart of campus. The interior of the 100,000-square-foot building was transformed to accommodate many functions within the existing footprint, creating a destination conducive to comradery and success on both a personal and team level.

The open expanse at the center of the building now houses a new varsity competition space for volleyball with an alternate configuration for three practice courts and training spaces for indoor track and field, including a regulation-length long jump pit, a regulation-size pole vault area, a three-lane 200-meter track, a 60-meter sprint track, and a netted area for throwing practice. Initially slated for removal, preserving the two existing mezzanines provides additional space for cardio equipment and study space overlooking the volleyball court and track.

Support spaces include a sports medicine area that offers rehabilitation, taping/treatment, hydrotherapy and training; two weight rooms; a fueling station; academic advising study spaces, offices and a tutoring area; an auditorium for academics and team meetings; and coaches’ offices and locker rooms for each program.

JMU is committed to providing the best student-athlete experience in the nation, and this move ensures that the school’s focus resides on its student-athletes and balancing their competitive and off-the-field success. The enhanced facility embodies this commitment to the academic and athletic success of student-athletes by providing spaces to train, heal, rest and study.
