Canbury School Newsletter 9th May 2025. ISSUE 367

Heads Welcome

Dear Families,

Welcome to the latest edition of the Canbury newsletter! Despite it being a shorter week, we certainly packed in a fantastic array of activities and achievements.

I was particularly moved by the thoughtful and insightful assembly presented by our Year 8 students today. They filled us all in on why we commemorate VE Day and showed us a clip of someone who was actually at a VE day party in 1945. Their understanding and delivery was absolutely fantastic, well done Year 8.

We also held our first silent disco this week. It was wonderful to see so many students (and staff) letting loose and having fun together – a truly memorable event. Watch out for round 2 at the summer party!

Lastly, a big shout-out to our Year 11, 12 and 13 students who are powering through their public exam studies this week. It's fantastic to hear them feeling positive and knowing they've given it their absolute best after their exams.

Wishing you all a restful weekend.

Mrs Rich - Head

Farewell Feast for Our Fantastic 2025 Leavers!

This morning was all about saying a goodbye to our amazing Year 11s and 6th Form students. We laid on a buffet breakfast for them to tuck into during the first hour of the day – a chance to fuel up before hitting the books for their exams later today. There was shirt-signing, celebratory music and snaps being taken with friends and teachers. Wishing all our 2025 leavers the absolute best as they embark on their study leave soon and smash those exams!

We Had a Wicket Good Time!

Our first Inter-house Cricket fixture took place on Wednesday. It was a fierce, yet friendly, competition as Johnson took on Noble, with Noble emerging victorious.

Special mention to Rory who proposed this event to raise awareness for Prader Willi Syndrome. More information on this condition can be found here: https://www.pwsa.co.uk/

AQA Unit Award Successes

Great news from the AQA Unit Award Scheme! A number of Canbury students have recently achieved success in a variety of engaging topics.

We've seen students master the intricacies of horse tack, gain valuable knowledge in healthy eating, develop important skills for maintaining good mental health, learn the basics of surfing, deepen their maths skills and explore the world of psychology. These achievements showcase the diverse interests of our students.

Congratulations to everyone who has earned their certificates. Mrs Lansdell says, "keep up the good work!"

Honing Javelin Skills

Our budding athletes have been showing off some serious throwing power, as these photos capture students honing their javelin skills with impressive focus and technique.

Updates from the Science Lab

We have been very busy in science the last two weeks, with the Year 9’s and 11s dissecting lamb hearts. Strawberries having their DNA extracted by the year 8s and the Y7’s burning magnesium in crucibles, realising that oxygen atoms in the air combine with magnesium to form magnesium powder, proven by the extra mass gained! Y10’s investigating the effects of Infra-red absorption and emission of various colours. Mr Mathy

Canbury Goes Quietly Wild at Our Fantastic Silent Disco!

This week, Canbury experienced a different kind of buzz – a silent one! Our highly anticipated school silent disco proved to be an absolute smash hit, transforming the hall into a vibrant, yet surprisingly hushed (apart from some cracking singing), dance floor.

Students donned individual wireless headphones, each glowing with a different colour corresponding to one of the two channels of music being simultaneously broadcast.

From the latest chart-toppers to classic anthems and even some surprise throwback tracks, there was something for everyone to enjoy. It was fantastic to see students from all year groups letting loose and having fun together in such an inclusive and energetic way.

A huge thank you to the student council for the idea and all the members of staff for their hard work in bringing this event to life.

No! It's too cheesy.

Pedal Power for Charity! Support Mr. Hogan

Mr Hogan is doing London to Brighton in June for the British Heart Foundation. He is adding an incentive to dig deep by offering the three highest paying members of staff or students the opportunity to tip a HUGE bucket of ice water over him on the day of our sponsored walk!

Donate here and a massive thank you to those of you who have already donated!

Shining Bright for Charity

Soon, one of our Yr13 parents will be taking on the incredible challenge of the Moonwalk, a night-time walking marathon raising money for vital breast cancer charities. This inspiring event sees participants walking through the night in decorated bras to show their support.

If you'd like to sponsor their walk and help them reach their fundraising goal, you can donate via their page HERE
