Folklore Ariel Quartet with Alisa Weilerstein

folk·lore [ˈfōklôr] NOUN the immaterial and traditional cultural heritage of a community, passed through the generations by word of mouth.

folk·lore is an exploration of the influence Folk Music has had on Art Music spanning centuries and continents. The lines separating the two genres are often blurred, resulting in new sound worlds and revolutionary compositional styles associated with many of the most celebrated composers of today and the past. It is precisely this grayzone, the in-between, that serves as the inspiration for this program.

Tour Dates

December 2024

An unannounced dialogue between Solo Cello and String Quartet featuring all five artists on stage simultaneously will comprise the first half of the program, performed together in an uninterrupted suite. Works will include transcriptions and arrangements of traditional folk music from around the world, as well as composed pieces by both established and lesser known composers dating from the 21st century back to the origins of Western Classical Music. These works remain unannounced so as to keep this part of the journey free of expectations, stimulating a sense of community with and for the audience by triggering a novel sense of musical discovery and adventure.

In the second half of the program, we will explore one of the most essential and influential works in the classical music repertoire: the Cello Quintet in C major by Franz Schubert. Having developed an artistic style deeply rooted in folk melody, Schubert's dedication to interweaving Folk and Art music is evident in the quintet's last movement. This movement is filled with folk-inspired elements such as richly resonating open strings, as well as rhythmic and harmonic patterns characteristic of the Romani music of Hungary. Combined with sudden and unexpected shifts in harmony, the piece contains several breathtaking moments that are synonymous with the composer's enduring legacy.
