What does it take to plan a sold-out, unforgettable event that celebrates an incredible leader like Tracy Vanairsdale? A lot of teamwork, inspiration, and behind-the-scenes magic! On November 16, the UAF College of Business and Security Management (CBSM) hosted the 46th annual Business Leader of the Year (BLOY) celebration at the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel, honoring Tracy for her decades of leadership, mentorship, and stunning architectural contributions across Alaska.
With a record-breaking sellout 54 days in advance, 237 guests officially checked in (though an independent tally counted over 300 attendees!), and $110,000 raised for CBSM initiatives, the evening was more than a celebration—a showcase of community.
Tracy’s Legacy: Building Stories Across Alaska
“Buildings tell stories,” Tracy said during her heartfelt acceptance speech, and her 27-year career at Bettisworth North Architects and Planners Inc. proves just that. Tracy's designs have shaped the places we gather, learn, and celebrate, from the vibrant UAF Wood Center to the cultural treasure of the Morris Thompson Cultural Center. Born and raised in Fairbanks with a degree in architecture from the University of Idaho, she returned to Alaska to leave an indelible mark, not just through her work but also through her mentorship and community service.
Behind the Scenes: How the Magic Happened
What you saw on November 16 was a polished, seamless event. What you didn’t see were the months of planning, brainstorming, and fine-tuning that made it happen. Here’s a peek behind the curtain:
The Big Surprise
The journey began in spring when CBSM’s “Champion Team” surprised Tracy at her office to share the news. With Dean Cameron Carlson, staff, and students in attendance, the moment was filled with excitement and anticipation.
The Student Dinner Tradition
Tracy continued a beloved BLOY tradition by hosting a student dinner at her office. The meal, catered by local entrepreneur “Alaska Lizzie,” included a Bettisworth North seat-switching tradition that encouraged connection and conversation - encouraging students to connect with one another—and with Tracy and other guests.
Inspiration to Preparation
Summer was all about diving deep into Tracy’s world. A visit to Bettisworth North’s Anchorage office provided insight into her love for art, nature, and skiing—elements infused into her work. Inspired by this, CBSM commissioned UAF student Abigail Hass to create a live painting at the event. The result? A vibrant ski-themed masterpiece by UAF student and artist Abigail Haas that brought Tracy’s passions to life.
Final Preparations: Behind the Scenes from a Student Perspective
The days leading up to the event were full of activity, and as a second-year marketing assistant with the CBSM Champion Team, I had the chance to experience it all firsthand. From Tracy’s selection as the honoree to the moment she stepped onto the stage, I was involved in many aspects of planning and execution. This summer, I joined the team on a visit to Bettisworth North’s Anchorage office, drawing inspiration for the event. Later, I made calls to invitees, approved final touches on table settings and walk-on songs, and assisted with production logistics.
CBSM Student Marketing Assistants and dynamic duo, Adeline Berry and Aila Berrigan pose together before the evening kicks off.
The final days before November 16 were especially busy. Speech run-throughs, menu tastings, and event setup filled our schedules. As the night approached, I managed the production bay, where I could watch everything come together. Each piece of the event—from lighting cues to walk-on songs—fell into place.
This journey has deepened my appreciation for the teamwork and dedication required to bring an event of this magnitude to life. Collaborating with such a passionate and driven team has shown me the true power of working together toward a shared goal. It’s a lesson I’ll carry forward into every stage of my life, knowing that success is often the result of collective effort and shared vision.
