Support Unit

Term 1 has been an exciting start to the year. With the new addition of flexible furniture, students have welcomed a new and dynamic approach to our learning environment.

We have three new students in Year 7, we have welcomed Mason, Madelyn and Ella to the Support Unit family. Staff have been busy meeting with families and external support teams to collaboratively plan learning programs, goals and pathways to cultivate success and positive educational outcomes.

Inclusive Sport: Athletics

Students travelled to Lismore to participate in a variety of Athletics events in an enjoyable, non-competitive setting. Students enjoyed participating in a variety of races on the track, as well trying their hand in some field events.

This day also provided our amazing teachers with the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of inclusive opportunities in the sport of Athletics, the classification process and multi-class pathways.

Community Access

Our students have enjoyed some beautiful days out and about in our community. This term we have focused on road and cycle safety, enjoying walks and bike riding in the school and community. Students also enjoyed a visit to Tweed City Shopping Centre and a session at Spring Loaded, which proved to be a fun and action packed activity

More Than Just a Job For Me

Special Education students in Years 9 to 12 have the opportunity to participate in regular work experience placements in Terms 2 to 4. Getting and keeping a job, whether in open employment, disability supported placement or volunteering is a key focus of our Secondary Studies Learning Program. This term we welcomed members from the Council for Intellectual Disability to deliver a two day workshop - More Than Just A Job For Me.

More Than Just a Job For Me is designed to support individuals with disabilities in becoming job-ready. This workshop covers essential topics such as -

  • Understanding individual skills and strengths
  • Defining career goals
  • Identifying suitable job opportunities
  • How we learn and work best

All staff involved were very impressed with the diligence and participation of our students. In these sessions students report they enjoyed the opportunity to unlock their strengths and skills so they can better independently choose what direction they want to take in life.

School Support Dogs

Sunni and Mojo are accredited as School Support Dogs and are onsite at Banora Point High School in the Support Unit on Tuesday and Thursday each week. They love getting cuddles and pats and listening to the students read. Many of our students report the positive impact Sunni and Mojo have on their wellbeing and they are valued members of our Support Unit family.
