Principal's Message
Term 2 at Mullumbimby High School has been a vibrant period of learning, leadership, and community engagement.
Step Up to High School
Our Year 6 into 7 'Step Up to High School' initiative continued with great success. Transition afternoons in May and June provided Year 6 students with immersive high school experiences, fostering familiarity and excitement for the next academic chapter. Our Year 6 students were very enthusiastic and engaged with their learning as well as making new friends from the other schools. Next term will see further opportunities for our future students to engage with high school including the “Science on the Bus” tour where our Year 9 and Year 10 students will be visiting our partner primary schools to share science experiences with Year 4 students and our CAPA showcase where Year 6 will join us for the afternoon before the main event.
Homework Club
From Weeks 2 to 9, the Homework Club provided students in Years 7–12 with dedicated support for classwork and assessments, fostering academic growth and confidence. Thursday afternoon homework club is a fantastic opportunity for students to seek assistance and ensure they complete assessments on time.
Learning Journeys
It was wonderful to be a part of a panel for the Year 7 Learning Journey interviews this week. I am passionate about students having agency in their learning and ensuring that they know how to use feedback well to ensure they continue to grow and develop. At MHS, we continue to grow this program to ensure students have ownership and take responsibility for their learning. It is a great opportunity for parents and carers to check in on the work their young people are progressing and know how they can assist to meet student learning goals. It really does show that learning is a journey and sometimes along that path, students wander off course but there is always an opportunity to get back on board and meet those goals. All students in Year 7-10 have a Learning Journey Website that they have created and can add to as they progress through each term. These will become further embedded into celebrating success and progress in learning for the remainder of the year and moving forward. Interviews with a teacher and students from older year groups are a great way to practice skills for gaining employment or scholarships in the future as well.
Thank you to our P&C
We express gratitude to our P&C and Uniform Committee for their efforts in ensuring students are well-equipped and kept warm. I let students know at assembly this week that we will be phasing out black jumpers and hoodies over this year and fully embracing our school logo and the blue hoodies and jumpers. Uniform is such an important way to celebrate our sense of belonging to a wonderful public school and I am encouraging everyone to proudly show that we are Mullumbimby High School.
Interviews for Year 7 2026 High Achievers next term
Applications for our High Achievers Year 7 2026 closed at the end of June and we have interviews coming up for applicants in week 2 and 3 next term. At MHS, the high achievers class is just one way that we engage our high potential students across the 4 domains of potential (intellectual, physical, creative and social-emotional). We cater for High Potential and Gifted students at MHS through both class based curriculum offerings and with extra-curricular opportunities.
Farewell Siboney Saavedra
It is with some sadness that we farewell Ms Siboney Saavedra at the end of this term. Ms Saavedra has been at Mullumbimby High School for many years and has been instrumental in helping students gain exceptional results in English. She has been acting as Head Teacher of English for the past 5 years and will be missed here at school as she pursues other avenues. The silver lining to this cloud though is that Mr James Clarke will return to the Head Teacher English role. Mr Clarke has been working with the Curriculum Directorate for the past 18 months and we look forward to having his passionate expertise back here with us.
Next Term in focus
Next term will be a very busy one, beginning with NAIDOC Week Celebrations, Year 10 subject selections for their senior study, HSC Trials and actual exams and submissions for HSC practical subjects: textiles, industrial technology, society and culture, extension history, visual arts and music. All this along with our Year 11 Drama production of The Life of Insects in week 7 and the CAPA showcase in week 8 and the incredible work that happens everyday in our classrooms and wellbeing hub.
Reminder to Wear your Helmets
Just a reminder to all our students to wear their helmets while riding their bikes. And please consider the safety not just of yourself but other road and path users. Stay safe over the holidays and enjoy all that our beautiful shire has to offer.
Dates when we return in Term 3
Staff will be involved in a development day on Monday 21 July. Students are back on Tuesday 22 July 2025 for Term 3. I wish all our students, families, and staff a safe and refreshing break.
Bree Harvey-Bice, RELIEVING PRINCIPAL
English
It’s been a rich and full Term 2 for the English faculty. Between Shakespearean tales of love and woe, more essay writing (and marking) than you could possibly imagine (and then some!), the creation of tales - tall and true - and an exploration of the way documentaries weave their magic, we’ve had our hands full and our imaginations charged.
Year 7 English
In Year 7, students have studied the Hero’s Journey, gaining insights into the various aspects of storytelling and the ways in which we craft challenges for our characters. Students have enjoyed this unit and especially the chance to read loved books and watch favourite films, looking for the moment when ‘the ordinary world is changed’ or the hero ‘meets their mentors’. And then there are all the wonderful stories they’ve written!
Year 8 English
Year 8 began the term with a deep dive into all things poetry and then shifted gears to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which ended up being a firm favourite for students and teachers alike.
Year 9 English
Year 9 spent the first few weeks recapping poetic styles and techniques in preparation for their Poetry exam, after which came their Documentary module. Students explored the various styles of documentary, and the techniques used to engage audiences, and then they selected their own doco to study, analyse and present to the class. Topics selected were interesting and varied, from Hiroshima to River Monsters to The Social Dilemma and The Astroworld Tragedy, everyone is to be commended for their efforts and their fascinating insights.
Year 10 English
Year 10 English have been studying Shakespeare this year. 10ENGB studied Hamlet and in class performed 'The Murder of Gonzago', Hamlet's 'play within a play'. They did a great job of performing in the traditional Shakespearean.
Year 11
Year 11 students have been working hard in each of their courses. We have a wonderful cohort of Yr 11 students, keen to do well in their studies and engaging with their coursework. From the Standard English studies into Constructed Realities via the film ‘Pleasantville’’, the English Studies students’ exploration of dystopian depictions in the Digital Worlds module, the Advanced English discussions of Othello and Othello (if you know, you know), and the Extension English discussions around all things related to the interplay between text and context, it’s been a massive and rewarding term.
Year 12
In Year 12, students are beginning to feel the rush of time and the looming spectre of the HSC Trial exams in early Term 3. This term we dug deep across all courses, exploring the various ways texts shape narratives and encourage us to think deeply about all manner of issues. Students have worked well to refine both their understanding and their essay writing skills, and we’re encouraging everyone to keep revising their notes in preparation for the exams.
Debating
Earlier this term, the Year 10 debate team went head-to-head against Banora Point High. Their topic was 'Single use plastics should be banned in NSW schools'. The Mullumbimby team was given the negative position and after a tense debate they managed to secure the victory. Wish us luck against The Rivers Secondary College in Week 10.
Goodbye from Siboney Saavedra
After working as a teacher at Mullumbimby High for the past 12 years, the time has come for me to say goodbye. It has been a joy and an honour to teach thousands of young people, and to spend my days waxing lyrical about literature (one of my deepest passions)! To have done this alongside teachers I admire and respect has been one of my life’s greatest joys.
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work at Mullumbimby High, a beautiful school within a beautiful community. I am also extremely proud to have been the Head Teacher of the English faculty for almost five years, a faculty filled to the brim with talented, passionate, caring and professional teachers, each of whom has enhanced my life in more ways than they can imagine.
And then there are the students. So many of them. So many stories, quirks, talents, and fears; so much trepidation, excitement, ambivalence, and angst. So much energy. Thank you to every student I have ever taught! Thank you for challenging me to be the best teacher and human I can be, and for keeping me tuned into the girl I once was.
With love and gratitude, goodbye Mullum High
Technological and Applied Studies (TAS)
Year 7 Materials and Production
This term, our Year 7 students have been introduced to working with metal through an exciting project—creating their own treasure boxes from galvanised steel sheet. Along the way, they’ve been developing important foundational skills such as measuring and marking out accurately, and safely using tools like aviation snips, the magnabender, and spot welder. Students also explored the letter stamping process to personalise their work, gaining hands-on experience and confidence in basic metal fabrication techniques.
Year 8 Materials and Production
This term in Materials and Production Processes, Year 8 students are working on a fun and practical project – designing and making a flat-pack fire pit from mild steel sheet.
Students are learning about the design process, including researching ideas, creating CAD models, and keeping track of their progress in a portfolio. In the workshop, they’re learning how to use tools like tin snips, a guillotine, nibbler, magnabender, scriber, ruler, centre punch, and the drill press to cut and shape their metal safely, with a focus on good WHS practices. It’s been a great opportunity for students to build their skills while creating something useful.
Year 9 and 10 Construction
This term, our Year 9 and 10 Construction students wrapped up their timber tools project, completing their mallets and cement floats with great results. They have now progressed to their major build—a concrete-top coffee table. Students have been hard at work crafting the timber legs and supports, developing skills in accurate measuring and marking, chiseling rebate joints, rounding edges with the trim router, planing surfaces flat, and using tools like the orbital sander and jigsaw. Precision has been key, particularly when preparing dowel joints. Next, students will move into mould making and begin working with cement—learning techniques for mixing, tinting, levelling, and setting the concrete table top. This project is a fantastic opportunity to apply practical skills in a real-world context while building confidence in both design and construction.
Year 10 Design & Technology
This term, our Year 10 Design and Technology students proudly completed their custom skateboard decks, bringing together weeks of creative and practical work. The final products featured unique marquetry designs and professional finishes, showcasing both technical skill and personal style.
Students have now moved on to their Mini Major Design Project, where they identify a real-world problem and develop a design solution. Project ideas so far include a dual guitar rack, foldable chess board, resin lamp, collapsible futsal goal, and even a mini pool table. This extended task runs across two terms and gives students valuable experience in planning, creating, and documenting a design project—laying the groundwork for the major design project they’ll undertake in Year 12.
Year 11 Design and Technology
This term, the Pallet Product project has been in full swing, with students transforming reclaimed pallet timber into creative and functional items. Projects have included cricket bats, fishing lures, weightlifting benches, side tables, modern wall shelving, and surfboard racks—each showcasing individual innovation and problem-solving. Alongside the hands-on work in the workshop, students have continued developing their design portfolios, documenting their research, concept development, CAD drawings, time plans, and ongoing evaluations. This task not only highlights sustainable design practices but also prepares students for the expectations and process of their Year 12 Major Design Project.
Textiles
It has been a busy and creative term across all year groups in Textiles, with students developing both foundational and advanced skills through hands-on, practical projects.
Year 7 students have been working hard to complete their tote bags and pencil cases, learning a range of essential sewing techniques. Through this unit, they mastered how to thread a sewing machine, sew open and closed seams, create hems and straps, and attach Velcro. The sense of pride in their finished products was well-deserved!
Year 9 students recently wrapped up their first major project — a quilted toiletries bag, along with reusable face wipes. This project challenged them to develop more complex skills such as quilting, inserting zippers and linings, creating boxed corners, and using an overlocker. The students' attention to detail was impressive, and the final results were both functional and stylish. They are now transitioning into textile art techniques, including beading, embroidery, free-motion stitching, and appliqué, in preparation for next term’s embroidery hoop wall hanging projects.
Year 10 students have just completed their matching pyjama sets, learning how to work with tricky slip fabrics like satin. This unit also focused on reading and cutting patterns, inserting elastic waistbands, sewing buttonholes and facings, and customising garments for a better fit. The completed pyjamas looked fantastic, and students should be commended on their effort and persistence. They are now beginning work on their individual mini major projects, where they’ll showcase their creativity and growing confidence.
Year 11 students completed their stuffed toy unit as an engaging introduction to Stage 6 Textiles. Each student selected and customised their own pattern, resulting in a range of unique and personal designs. With their toys complete, they have now begun working on their Year 11 mini major projects to refine their skills and prepare for the HSC year ahead.
Finally, Year 12 students are in the final stages of completing their Major Textiles Projects. These impressive works are a testament to their dedication and talent, and we commend them on the long hours and commitment they’ve shown. We wish them all the best for their upcoming Trial HSC exams and the final submission of their projects.
Well done to all our talented Textiles students — your creativity, effort and progress this term has been outstanding!
Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE)
Students from Year 11 Legal Studies along with Mrs Hawkey and Ms Frame visited the Lismore Court House on Tuesday 13 May. The students were respectful of the entry procedures and fortunate enough to sit in the District Court’s public gallery. Students met and spoke with a local Legal Aid Solicitor, who offered some valuable insight into the courthouses and processes. A relatively ‘quiet’ day in court didn’t disappoint the group. Students witnessed an appeal decision from the Local Court and a criminal sentencing via video link with the District Court in Parramatta. The visiting Judge was amazing and spoke with the students about her experiences as a prosecutor and now District Court Judge after she concluded her sentencing matter.
Inclusive Learning
The photos are from term 2 excursions with the support classes. These trips include visits to Summerland Farm, The Boccia Tournament at Ballina Coast High School, The School Ag Plot and caring for the calves, Visiting The Farm in Byron Bay, Broken Head Nature Walk, The Rail Trail, Murwllumbah Art Gallery and Screen Futures in Lennox Head. Thanks to all the staff that made these trips so educational and inspiring for our supported students.
Environmental Awareness Team
Recently our Environmental Awareness Team and some Year 7 classes were fortunate to have a visit from Lottie Dalziel who was awarded NSW Young Australian of the Year in 2023.
Lottie is the founder of a social enterprise in Sydney called Banish. Banish accepts items like bottle top lids, beauty products, blister packs and other plastics that regular council recycling bins won’t except. They recycle them so they don’t go into landfill. Over the last four years, they have diverted more than 3.2 million pieces of plastic from landfill.
Lottie did a Q&A session with our Environmental Awareness Team then shared her story and what she does, including practical demonstrations on how to make reusable pens out of otherwise non-recyclable plastics, with some Year 7 classes. If you’d like to find out more, including how your household could contribute please go to the link below for more information. https://banish.com.au/pages/recycling-program?srsltid=AfmBOooFsGAop_fJ43S9-zwuFavBnMmyfT4baKas8OlCYgkdAhfmqBaJ

Musical Achievements and Community Connections at Mullumbimby High
Term Two at Mullumbimby High School has been a whirlwind of musical discovery and achievement. From mastering instruments to captivating the school and local community with their performances, our students have truly showcased their musical talents and passion this term.
Year 7: A Journey Through Keyboard and Guitar Our Year 7 students have embarked on an exciting musical journey, diving into the world of keyboard and guitar. They’ve demonstrated exceptional dedication as they explored both melodies and chords, with a newfound enthusiasm for performance. The growth in their skills over the term has been extraordinary, and Mullumbimby High is buzzing with the promising musical talents of these young musicians.
Year 8: Exploring the Blues and Rock Legends Meanwhile, Year 8 students have embraced the timeless sounds of Blues and Rock music. They’ve delved into the defining characteristics of these genres, honing their skills in performing iconic 12-bar blues on the keyboard and mastering classic rock melodies. The level of proficiency demonstrated by these students has been impressive, and we’re excited to see what next year’s elective Year 9 class will bring—they’re certainly ones to watch!
Years 9, 10, 11, and 12: Exceptional Performances, Small Ensembles, and HSC Prep Our Year 9, 10, and 11 students have continued to captivate audiences with their outstanding performances this term, demonstrating impressive growth and skill. From arranging diverse musical repertoires to performing in dynamic small ensembles, they’ve brought an exciting energy to school events, earning praise for their artistry and dedication. Their ability to collaborate and create has set a high standard for excellence.
Meanwhile, our Year 12 students have been working tirelessly in preparation for their HSC music performances, refining their skills and pushing the boundaries of their artistry. They’ve shown incredible commitment and resilience as they gear up for this significant milestone in their musical journeys. Their hard work is evident in every note and every rehearsal, and we are incredibly proud of their dedication.
What’s even more inspiring is how all of our music students—from Year 7 to Year 12—have supported each other at school events. Whether performing solo, in small groups, or collaborating across year levels, they have treated each performance as an opportunity to learn, grow, and cheer each other on. This spirit of collaboration has enriched our school community and strengthened the bonds within the Music Department. The anticipation is building for the CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) Showcase in Term Three, where we’ll see these students shine even brighter. It promises to be an event not to be missed, so be sure to stay tuned for more details!
Representing Mullumbimby High in the Wider Community
Our students have truly taken their musical talents beyond the school walls this term, performing at several local venues and events. Notable performances include the Pocket Winter Festival and the Old and Gold Mullumbimby High Busking Stage, where our students had the opportunity to showcase their skills to the wider community. The Year 12 Girls’ band Stellar also made waves, performing at numerous locations and gaining recognition for their impressive sound and stage presence.
Additionally, a huge shoutout to Gary O'Halloran for his unwavering support of our students at these events. Gary's dedication to ensuring our students have the opportunities to perform and represent Mullumbimby High is truly invaluable. Without his tireless efforts, these extracurricular activities would be much more challenging to organise. We are deeply grateful for his ongoing commitment to our students’ success.

Science
Agriculture
It’s been a very busy and experientially full term in Agriculture this term. Our stages 4/5 and 6 students had a very enjoyable hands-on experience fostering a couple of 3- and 4-week-old calves. The calves were supplied by a local farmer, Damien Nardy, a former student of Mullumbimby High, and were part of the dairy industry's annual “Cows Create Careers” national initiative. Students had hands-on experiences immersing themselves in various animal husbandry tasks such as calf care, nutrition, and interesting aspects involving the dairy industry.
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)
Year 12 PDHPE Students Brave the Ice
On the coldest day in May, our Year 12 PDHPE students took the plunge—literally!
As part of their unit on Factors Affecting Performance, students explored recovery strategies by participating in an ice bath immersion activity, turning classroom theory into chilly, hands-on experience.
The session offered valuable insight into the physical and psychological benefits of ice baths, reinforcing their learning in a practical (and very brisk!) way.
Well done to all students for their enthusiasm, effort, and commitment—you certainly earned your recovery!
Year 11 Health and Movement Science: Discovering Skills and Hidden Talents
This term, Year 11 Health and Movement Science. Students have been diving into the stages of skill acquisition through a range of hands-on, engaging activities. From juggling and cup speed stacking to goal kicking in AFL by using a dribbling banana kick, students have had the opportunity to put theory into practice. Along the way, they’ve not only deepened their understanding of motor learning and performance—but also uncovered some unexpected hidden talents!
Wheelchair Sports Program – A Lesson in Inclusion and Ability
Students from our Year 7 Sports Excellence Program, Year 11 Health and Movement Science, and Year 12 PDHPE classes had the unique opportunity to experience wheelchair ball sports, all thanks to Australian Paralympian and silver-medalist David Johnson.
David delivers the Sports Ability program, an inspiring and hands-on initiative designed to help students better understand disability inclusion through sport. “Trying sport in a wheelchair gives students a whole new perspective,” David said. “It’s fun, fast, and opens up conversations about accessibility and inclusion for people with all types of disabilities.”
The sessions were packed with energy, learning and laughter as students took on the challenge of moving and playing sport from a different perspective. David’s approach is all about breaking down barriers, building empathy, and helping young people feel comfortable around people with disabilities. We’re incredibly grateful to have had David visit our school and deliver such a powerful and engaging learning experience!
Our Sport Champions
Futsal Teams Shine at Gala Days
This term, our futsal teams, 14s Boys and Girls, 16s Boys and Girls, and Open Boys, travelled to Coomera to compete in the Veto Sports Futsal Gala Days against some of the top teams from the Gold Coast and surrounding regions. Meanwhile, our Open Girls team made the trip to Nissan Arena to take on some of Brisbane’s best.
For many of our younger players, it was their first time playing together, and they faced tough opposition. Despite this, they rose to the challenge, improving with each game and gaining valuable experience throughout the day.
Across all teams, our students demonstrated exceptional teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship, along with flashes of individual brilliance. A huge congratulations to everyone who participated—you represented our school with pride!
Mullumbimby High School Cross Country
On Wednesday, 7th May, students from Years 7 to 12 laced up their running shoes and took on the scenic 5.2km cross country course at Brunswick Heads. Blessed with clear blue skies and a gentle coastal breeze, the day provided perfect conditions for our runners to showcase their endurance and school spirit.
A hearty congratulations to Rocco Davidson and Lily Rose-Newell, who were the first to cross the finish line in the boys' and girls' categories, respectively. Their outstanding performances set the pace for a day filled with enthusiasm and determination.
Beyond individual achievements, the event was a testament to collective effort, with students and staff earning valuable points for their respective houses. The camaraderie and support displayed throughout the day highlighted the strong community spirit that defines our school.
A special thank you to all participants, volunteers, and supporters who contributed to the success of this memorable event. We look forward to building on this momentum in future sporting endeavors!
Far North Coast Cross Country
Mullumbimby High School proudly attended the Far North Coast Cross Country Carnival held at Byron Bay High School. This year’s course was modified due to beach erosion, with more challenging single-track sections replacing parts of previous routes. Despite the tougher terrain, conditions were perfect – a bluebird sunny day with ideal running temperatures.
All 22 Mullumbimby students gave their best effort, running with determination and school spirit. Impressively, 16 of our runners qualified for the next stage: the North Coast Cross Country at Nana Glen in mid-June. Congratulations to all competitors on a fantastic effort and good luck to those progressing to the next level!
Mullumbimby High School Athletics Carnival
On Friday 6 June, the Mullumbimby High School community came together for a fun-filled and action-packed Athletics Carnival. Students proudly dressed in their house colours and brought fierce competitive spirit to every event, showcasing their talent across the track and field.
The novelty events were a crowd favourite, with students enthusiastically taking part in the three-legged race, tug of war and agility course. Track and field events ran throughout the day, with impressive participation and sportsmanship on display.
A big shoutout to Year 10, who kept everyone fuelled with a BBQ and snack stall to raise funds for their formal later in the year.
Thank you to all the staff who helped run the events and to every student who contributed to making the day such a successful celebration of school spirit and athleticism in the sunshine!
North Coast Cross Country Success
Earlier this term, nine Mullumbimby High School students competed at the North Coast Cross Country event, held at the Woolgoolga Sports Complex. We are proud to announce that four of our students placed in the top six of their respective events, earning a spot at the State Cross Country Championships in Sydney—a fantastic achievement!
A special congratulations to Lily-Rose Newell, who delivered an outstanding performance by taking first place in the Girls U14 race.

Notes from the P&C
We've had a busy term, during which we've held our usual 2 meetings, giving great opportunity to delve into some important discussions around fundraising, allocation of our funds, school uniform, workshops and gatherings, grant applications and a multitude of other pertinent topics, in line with supporting our students, their carers and the school.
The P&C love spending our hard-earned funds and is delighted to provide an immediate contribution of $2000 towards the school's purchase of an all-terrain wheelchair. We continue to seek grant funding to support the purchase of other much-needed items we’re looking at on the head-of-faculty wish list.
We're working towards a community fundraiser later in the year, likely to take place in term 4. We welcome your input and ideas. Watch this space for more details.
In response to a series of conversations conducted in 2023 with the then Year 11 students, the Mullumbimby & District Neighbourhood Centre (MDNC) established from the students that the P&C was considered "a trusted body" that supported the student community. Following on from that, we're excited to be hosting MDNC in running a community conversation evening with the current parents and carers of MHS, to be held Monday 28 July in the school library, gathering 5.30pm for a 5.45pm start, ending by 7.15pm. We'd love you to join us. Please reply by email to mullumbimbyhighpandc@gmail.com so that catering can be arranged.
The next P&C meeting will be on Monday, August 4th in the school library – please add it to your calendar, we’d love for you to join us.
