Head's Welcome
Dear Families, It has felt very strange and quiet around the corridors this week with nearly 30 of our students and six staff members away on the Italian slopes! While we have missed them, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed following their adventures through daily photos and messages. As I write this, the group is high in the air on their way back to us. We cannot wait to have them back in the building and hear all their stories firsthand. For those of us remaining at school, it has been a week of flexibility and fun. Students have enjoyed a brilliant mix of their usual lessons alongside project-based learning. There was a wonderful buzz across our mixed-year classes, and the Chocolate Project sounded particularly interesting to me! On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day. This year, we introduced the choice of wearing "comfy book-reading clothes," and it was lovely to see everyone looking so cozy. In fact, I think a "Comfy Day" should probably become a standing fixture in our school calendar every term! I am delighted to share that I have been elected by fellow ISA Heads in the South West as the Area SEND Co-coordinator. As this is a brand-new role, the full job description is still being shaped, but I am incredibly excited to champion the vital work our regional SEND schools do. I look forward to collaborating with other Heads and staff to ensure our students have the very best representation and opportunities. A Request from our Neighbours A quick reminder for our families regarding our neighbours in Astor Close. Please remember that this is a private road; it should not be used for turning or reversing during drop-off and pick-up times. We value our relationship with our local community and thank you for your cooperation and courtesy in this matter. What we've been up to
The Mayor of Kingston
We were honoured to welcome The Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Noel Hadjimichael, to Canbury School today. He is the 191st Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston and we had a wonderful assembly where he and Brian (Mayoral Assistant) spoke to us about his role as Mayor, The Great Mace and the history of Kingston before answering some questions. There was much excitement as Mrs Rich also showed him around our school and he took photos with us - with one student describing him as "actually kind of chill", which is a very big compliment!
Ski Trip 2026
A full update on our ski trip will come next week, but for now here are a selection of photos! There has been lots of snow, pizza and new skills learnt - we can't wait to hear about it all when everyone is back :)
Fidget Toy Delivery
There has been much excitement over the last week as we have had a fidget toy delivery! We feel very fortunate to have discovered the wonderful SBCreates who are a neurodiverse family running their small 3D printing business. From staff to students to those visiting us from KS2, they have been a huge and thank you to Sam 6F for his help with the photos.
Richmond Park Wellbeing Walk
Sam S and Ms Chorazyczewska took a lovely refreshing 2mile Wellbeing Walk today in Richmond Park. They enjoyed the space and being within nature, seeing the blossom starting to show and a beetle going about it's day!
World Book Day Assembly
Mrs Eynon held a world Book Day Assembly on Tuesday for us and the theme this year is "curl up with a good book". She spoke to us about some of the staff's favourite books and why reading can be so beneficial. It was the perfect thing to kick us off for the main event which was on Thursday,.... (see below)
World Book Day
We had a very enjoyable and sunny World Book Day! Students came in either their comfortable clothes or a book character, with some themed lunches and a game.... They had to choose mystery books from their opening line, then open the envelope and read the first few pages to see if they liked it! This activity was all about encouraging students to try something new. We all enjoyed learning about new books, characters and even food!
Breaking the Grid: Year 8 Channel David Carson
Our Year 8 artists stepped away from the "perfect" and launched headfirst into the world of David Carson, the godfather of grunge typography. Known for his work with Ray Gun magazine, Carson famously threw out the rulebook of graphic design, prioritizing emotion over legibility. Our students experimented with:
- Deconstructed Typography: Slicing, dicing, distorting letters using a combination of hand drawn and digital fonts
- Expressive Layering: Combining found textures with bold, overlapping imagery.
- Intuitive Design: Learning that sometimes, "messy" is a deliberate and powerful choice.
The results are raw, energetic, and a brilliant reminder that in art, rules are often meant to be broken

Royal Academy Young Artists' Summer Show
We are incredibly please to say that Nina in year 7 has had a piece of her artwork selected for the Royal Academy Young Artist's Summer Show this year. The piece chosen it titled 'Catnip' and shown below. Huge congratulations Nina!
