overview
Lake Tahoe, one of the largest and most iconic alpine lakes on Earth, is facing a growing crisis. Plastic waste, microtrash, and other pollutants are threatening its crystal-clear waters and delicate shoreline ecosystems. This summer, I’m setting out to make a difference. I’m Claire Hewitt-Demeyer, a professional snowboarder, filmmaker, and lifelong environmental advocate. Over the course of several days, I’ll kayak the entire 72-mile circumference of Lake Tahoe using a human-powered pedal kayak to clean up trash from remote, hard-to-reach areas, raise awareness for lake conservation, and document this journey of healing and purpose.
This expedition isn’t just about cleaning up, it’s about connection. Following shoulder surgery after a demanding winter season, I’m using this time to heal both physically and mentally while giving back to the place I call home. Along the way, I’ll share the story with my community through engaging social media content and a short documentary film designed to inspire environmental action and highlight the power of human-powered exploration.
