Overview: Why Infographics

We have been living in the Information Age so deeply and for so long now that it may be difficult to perceive how the world has changed. Traditional economies used to be based on tangible products, commodities, and services like cars, wheat, and hospitals. But, now, information-based industries are at the center, so that decisions about producing cars, wheat, and health services are increasingly driven by data.

Perhaps the most universal, essential skill in the world today is the ability to use information technologies to solve problems. This requires you to first locate information, then analyze it, and then apply it. We now have never-ending galaxies of data—it’s overwhelming. The world needs people who can help others make sense of all of that information—which is why data visualization and infographics are increasingly important.

Infographics simplify and focus complex data to make information easier to access, understand, and ultimately act upon, and Adobe Express with Firefly offers an ideal way to start learning about data visualization by making infographics.

The infographic remixable template in this module is designed to sample three common forms of data visualization: tables, graphs, and illustrations. In fact, the template demonstrates a natural progression in the representation of data from a table to a graph to an illustration. Infographics often combine different kinds of data representation in one package, as demonstrated in the template and completed sample in this module.

Making an infographic in your coursework can help you better understand and retain content, can make for a more engaging and creative learning experience, and can develop essential communication, analytic, and technical skills. Once you make a first infographic or two, you will find increasing opportunities to apply your new “info-talents” to larger, additional projects.

The overall purpose of this sample project is to help students develop critical thinking and visual communication skills by exploring an issue and delivering their findings in the structured, concise format of an infographic. Using Adobe Express, students will create an infographic that visualizes data and information in a variety of ways such as tables, graphs, illustrations, timelines, iconography, and lists.
