Everyday Heroes Nursery, autumn term, week 10

This week in Nursery, we’ve been thinking about the people in our lives and community who help us. Using busy pictures to spark conversation, the children shared what they already knew about different helpers and talked about what they’d like to find out next.

We began by learning a little about police officers, firefighters, and doctors. The children loved taking on these roles through imaginative play, using costumes and props to act out all sorts of emergencies — from putting out imaginary fires to helping people who had “collapsed,” and even catching burglars who had stolen the play food!

All of this role play linked beautifully with our key story this week, which was unveiled during our Read, Play, Connect session.

'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers, about a penguin who needs help.

A big thank-you to all the parents (also very much our everyday heroes!) who joined us to help their children engage with the story and take part in the related activities.

Penguin painting and counting.

We really love reading and treasure our time to browse books together. Every Monday, the children visit the school library to hunt for inspiring picture books to enjoy and share.

Our writing and maths skills are progressing well. This week, we’ve been focusing on horizontal and vertical lines — the basic building blocks for learning how to control a pen for writing and for creating simple patterns in maths.

A highlight of the week was our cricket session. The children showed great listening, teamwork, and determination — the same qualities we’ll be celebrating over the coming weeks as we learn more about our everyday heroes.
