Fall Fashion

Graphic created by Blake Peek & Clara Hansen
Clara Hansen and Blake Peek

This article offers outfit inspiration for the upcoming season. Discover fresh ways to update your style and make a statement this fall.

Sweaters

You can never go wrong with a cozy sweater, especially in fall. Sweaters can go with almost anything, and will be a solid choice for your everyday wardrobe. You can style them with a variety of items such as jeans, skirts, shorts, and more. They can also pair a very complex or fancy outfit and make it more casual. Above all, sweaters are just appropriate and affordable.

Graphic created by Blake Peek & Clara Hansen

Scarves

Scarves are not only an article of clothing that will keep you warm, but they can also elevate your outfit to the next level. There are multiple styles of scarves and various ways to wear them. As shown in the collage, you can wrap them in multiple layers. An alternative option would be to make your own scarf instead of buying one.

Graphic created by Blake Peek & Clara Hansen

Pants

For your pants, you can never go wrong with a basic pair of jeans. Another idea would be to wear a colorful skirt and match it with a basic top. Since we are going into colder weather, you will want to wear more pants instead of shorts. If you wear a skirt, a good idea is to wear tights underneath, so you have a little bit of a layer and it's still cute.

Color Palette

Fall fashion is all about neutral colors, but sometimes people struggle to figure out which colors complement each other nicely.

Remember that not all pant colors will complement each other. Yes, it may have gone with your outfit yesterday, but it might not today. To help you with this, Blake and I have created this color palette, so you will not have to worry about mixing and matching outfits.

Fun & Easy Hairstyles for Girls

Gabby Hartung

It can be very fun to style your hair, whether it’s curling your hair, braiding, or even just putting your hair away from your face in a ponytail.

All those can be very fun to do, but it's crucial to keep your hair healthy and clean.

Tips for Brushing

When you are brushing your hair, it is very important to be gentle. Using a lot of force may rip out your hair and make it very frizzy.

Tips for Washing

Washing your hair everyday can dry out and damage your hair. While it is important to keep your hair clean, washing it too much is not good.

Fun Places To Go Downtown

Noelle Armstrong

In this page, I will be talking about fun places to go in downtown Ellensburg, and why I think you should go there!

D&M

D&M Coffee

D&M is a great place to go after school if you want to grab a good drink, food, or even work on your schoolwork. D&M has 3 different locations:

  • 325 North Pearl Street
  • 204 South Water Street
  • 1709, #2 Canyon Road

Hayday Bake & Brew

Hayday Bake & Brew

It is a charming little coffee shop that serves a variety of drinks, pastries, food, and more! It has seating downstairs, upstairs, and outside! To top it off, it has a relaxing and homey vibe.

Again, it is the perfect place to relax, get your schoolwork done, or just hang out with friends! Hayday is located at 215 West 3rd Ave.

The Sweet Spot

Sweet Spot Ellensburg

The Sweet Spot is one of my favorite places to go because they have so much! It is the perfect after-school spot to grab a treat, and then go across the street to Unity Park. They specialize in candy, ice cream, drinks, pastries, and more.

The Sweet Spot is located downtown at 114 W 4th Ave, Suite 102.

Ellensburg Floral

Ellensburg Floral is a shop located right next to Maurices that sells a wide variety of high-quality items. They sell home decor, flower bouquets, cosmetics, clothes, and more!

Ellensburg Floral is located downtown at 120 East 4th Ave.

Maurices

Maurices

Maurices is a cute and fun place to go if you are thinking of buying clothing, accessories, or footwear. The store probably has the BEST service I have ever experienced! You can do one-on-one shopping with the workers there, or even schedule a time when you can shop after hours with your friends, like a private party! They also have TONS of sales! A downside for the boys is that they only sell girls' clothing…

Maurices is located at 116 East 4th Ave.

Claim Clothing

Claim Clothing

Claim is a super cute shop that sells:

  • Tops: Camis, tanks, blouses, graphic tees, sweaters, and sweatshirts
  • Bottoms: Jeans, skirts, and shorts
  • Dresses and one-pieces: Maxi dresses, mini dresses, jumpsuits, and rompers
  • Outerwear: Jackets and vests
  • Shoes: Boots, booties, sneakers, and sandals

It is a little bit on the pricey side, but all the stuff they sell is super cute and high quality. Claim also only sells girls' clothing.

FALL SONGS

Luna Godinez

The weather is getting colder, and we’re transitioning from summer pop to indie fall. Here, we have a playlist of songs that will set the mood for fall, and some tips on how to build your own.

Fall Songs Playlist

(All songs are available on Spotify / Apple Music )

  1. Sweater Weather - The Neighbourhood
  2. The 1 - Taylor Swift
  3. Lacy - Olivia Rodrigo
  4. Stick Season - Noah Kahan
  5. There is a Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths
  6. No One Noticed - The Marias
  7. 505 - Arctic Monkeys
  8. Best Part - Daniel Ceaser Ft H.E.R
  9. Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now - The Smiths
  10. Lovers Rock - TV Girl
  11. Apple Cider - Beabadoobee
  12. Heavy - The Marias
  13. Let The Light in - Lana del Rey
  14. Eyes Without a Face - Billy Idol
  15. We Fell in Love in October - Girl in Red

How to build the perfect playlist?

Know the theme for your playlist.

When you're writing a playlist or making a list of songs, you need to have a theme in mind, for example, what genre (pop, indie, rock, etc.)? Also know what 'vibe’ you're going for. Do you want more happy, pop songs or sad, slow ballads.

How many songs are you going to have?

Quantity is very important when making a playlist, because you may not want a 2-hour playlist if you only listen to a couple of songs. Know how long you want it to be and know when you’ll be listening to it.

Pick your favorite songs.

While making a playlist, you might put some songs you don't really like, but they seem like they'd look good. But later, when you're listening to your playlist, and you just keep skipping all of the songs you just thought looked good, it just becomes a waste of time, so pick all the songs you know you won't skip!

Name and cover.

Another key to a perfect playlist is the name and the cover. Think of what name goes with the tracks, and a good picture on the side.

Creating a perfect playlist isn’t a difficult task, just keep in mind these details that can elevate your song mix. Have your favorite tracks, pick a good title, and a theme. Hope you like these songs and that these tips help with your next playlist!

Drawing Tips & Tricks!

Greta Smith

Have you ever been frustrated with trying to draw a dolphin that ends up a bit like a giraffe? We’ve all been there, trust me. Even artists weren’t born with magic realism powers. There aren't any super secrets we keep from you; it's shading and design! Practice is the #1 thing that helps you improve at any time. So, without further ado, let me present the things I use all the time to make my pencil art look nice, realistic, and pretty!

FRAMEWORK

You can't make a drawing without a proper base! At joints, I use circles/ovals, and the lines connecting can be curved or straight. Draw this lightly so it is easily erasable. Don't press into the paper.

OUTLINE

Now you can start tracing the skeleton to bring it to life! For now, draw lightly; you may want to make edits later.

DETAIL WORK

This means facial expressions, and maybe some fluff! Take your time and stay drawing lightly until you're sure it's what you want.

SHADING

One of my favorite parts! Before you jump right in, ensure you've completed the first step and have a guaranteed outline. Now, use the side of your pencil to add depth and texture. Use your finger to smear if preferred.

Cool! You created a pencil drawing using quick strategies that real artists use all the time! Using these techniques is a good skill to have if you are interested in drawing.

Thank you for reading. Now you can use these skills all the time!

Morgan Volleyball

Maxine Beam

Volleyball bursts with energy and excitement, drawing in fans and players alike. To join the action, Morgan volleyball players bring a positive mindset, sporty attire, and shoes that allow them to move with ease. To learn more about how Morgan volleyball players became successful in volleyball, keep reading.

Participation

Participation is the heartbeat of Morgan volleyball. When players step onto the court, their energy and effort lift not only their own game but also that of their teammates. Volleyball is a sport built on trust and teamwork, where every pass and volley depends on everyone being involved. If a player chooses to sit out, skip practice, or leave others out, the whole team feels the impact—including that player.

Trust

Relying on teammates to make the perfect pass or the right call during a game is often harder than it seems. In volleyball, as in life, trust is a precious virtue for them. It is something they must work hard to earn, yet it can vanish in an instant. Building trust may take time, but once they have it, the rewards are truly invaluable.

Attitude

A positive attitude on the volleyball court fuels the players' mental toughness, sharpening their focus, easing nerves, and building resilience. This energy strengthens team bonds and sparks both personal growth and collective victory among the team.

Morgan Bulldogs speak

Gabby Hartung, a seventh-grade A team player, said, “You should always believe in yourself, not just during volleyball but in life in general.” She also said, “ If there had to be one bad thing about volleyball, it would be when someone doesn't pay attention.” Finally, Gabby said, “I anticipate my favorite activity during the season will be making good plays and volleys."

Piper Deherrera from the eighth-grade B team said, “One thing that I don't like about volleyball is when people don't call the ball, because it becomes chaos and rarely ends well.” She also said, “I think that my favorite activity during the volleyball season will be away games or volleys.” Finally, she said, “Do your best, and even if you don't make the team, you'll always know you tried.”

We invite you to try out for the Morgan volleyball team next year or to come and watch some games! The team is excited and ready for the season, and we hope to see many of you at our games. We look forward to seeing lots of you at tryouts next year!

Advice for middle school relationships

Photos by Brynley McDaniels & Hailey Thomassen
Brynley McDaniels

For middle school relationships, be sure to start off strong. Get to know each other. Be honest with each other. Be kind to each other. Don’t let your friends pressure you into dating someone that you're not interested in, and remember to maintain other friendships and interests. Have boundaries, be honest about your feelings, and be prepared to end relationships that make you uncomfortable or are unhealthy.

Who should make the first move?

When you like someone who likes you back, go for it. I suggest that if you're a girl, make the first move, don’t wait for the boy. It sounds really weird, right? Every girl says that you can’t do that. Well, I say otherwise. Anybody can make the first move, whether you're a girl or not.

Do middle school relationships usually last?

Middle school relationships generally do not last for a long time, with many ending quickly due to the different thoughts in the boy's or girl's mind. These early relationships are more for learning how relationships work than for finding a lifelong partner.

Also, if you do have a crush or a boyfriend or a girlfriend, I suggest not telling anybody that you are dating or who your crush is, because if you want it to be a secret and you tell someone, it can spread like wildfire.

The boy's point of view on relationships

Photos by Brynley McDaniels & Hailey Thomassen

I went around and asked a few boys what their thoughts are about middle school relationships. Here are the questions and their responses:

Should hanging out with your bf/gf be awkward, and why?
  • Rhett Catlin- “No, it should not be.”
  • Noah Newberry- “Not awkward because you should be close.”
“What are your thoughts on people dating in middle school?”
  • Trent Moreland- “7th to 8th grade is the best time to date.”
What advice would you give to a boy who likes a girl?
  • Deacon Kanyer- “Shoot your shot if she is hot.”
  • Trenton Brost- “Shoot your shot.”
  • Noah Newberry- “Aim before you get her.”
  • Clay Breinholt liked the idea of “Will you be the 6 to my 7?”

The Girl's point of view on relationships

Photos by Brynley McDaniels & Hailey Thomassen

I also interviewed three girls about their thoughts on relationships in middle school. Here are the questions and their responses.

“What are your thoughts on people dating in middle school?”
  • Luna Godinez- “7th and 8th grade, yes, but maybe not 6th grade.”
  • Dilja Cos Knudsen- “Don’t date til high school.”
  • Zaylee Woodiwiss- “It's fine when you're in 7th or 8th grade.”

Thank you to the students for agreeing to these interviews.

Fall crafts

Graphic by Abbiey Rabel Fulp
Abbiey Rabel Fulp

These are three fun and easy fall crafts.

Painting Pumpkins

Painting pumpkins is a fun, mess-free alternative to traditional pumpkin carving. You can find affordable paint supplies at the dollar store or Fred Meyer, but I recommend the dollar store for its wide selection of fall-themed items at lower prices.

To get started, you’ll need a pumpkin, either real or fake (fake pumpkins will last longer). For paint, avoid watercolor and opt for water-based acrylic paints, which provide vibrant colors and easy clean-up.

String Pumpkins

String pumpkins may take a bit more time, but they're a creative and charming addition to your fall decor, perfect for adding a small, festive touch to any space.

To make them, gather a balloon, glue, pipe cleaners, and string or yarn. Start by inflating the balloon and hanging it above a pan or outside to protect your surfaces. Dip the string or yarn in glue, then wrap it around the balloon. Let the string dry completely before carefully popping and removing the balloon. Finish by attaching a pipe cleaner as the pumpkin’s stem.

Painted Rocks

Painting rocks is an easy way to add a personal flair to your locker or room. To start, gather smooth rocks, acrylic paint, and a brush. First, wash the rocks thoroughly. Next, apply a coat of white paint to create a bright base. Once it's dry, unleash your creativity by adding designs, patterns, or quotes.

Finish off by sealing the rocks with a clear topcoat for protection. Enjoy the vibrant addition to your space, or gift it to friends!

Advice for My extroverts and introverts here at Morgan Middle School!

Dani Linares

Whether you love being around people or enjoy spending time alone, everyone can succeed here!

What is an extrovert?

An extrovert is energized by social interactions and external stimulation, often appearing outgoing and sociable.

What is an introvert?

While an introvert is drained by social situations and prefers solitary or quiet activities, they find energy in reflection and internal thought.

Advice for Extroverts

If you're an extrovert like me, you may have heard people say you're too energetic or extra. But who cares?

Express yourself, show your light, and be happy- don’t let anyone bring you down. Be crazy, be unique, be yourself, and don’t change. Show everyone your strengths.

Some people may dislike you because they are jealous of your outgoing nature, but if others try to bring you down, get back up.

Advice for introverts

If you're an introvert, embrace your own pace. No rule says you have to make a huge group of friends quickly. Focus on building connections and forming meaningful friendships.

Take your time. After school or social events you may feel drained because social interaction requires a significant amount of energy. Don’t feel guilty for needing alone time to recharge. This helps you be your best self when it matters!

Whether you are an extrovert or an introvert, just remember to be yourself and focus on yourself.

  • Page Count: 541
  • Rating 4.5 stars

Review

After reading this book, I found an author and series that could rival my past opinions on books. I went from reading science fiction to exclusively reading this series and more of this fantasy genre.

The Mistborn series follows a team of criminals single-handedly trying to overthrow a millennium-long dictatorship ruled by the immortal (and ironically named) Lord Ruler.

This book was so lore intense I frequently had to stop reading to contemplate the effect the words on the page in front of me had inflicted. This book also had the best form of magic out of all the fantasy novels I’ve read.

Despite all of my praise, the reason this book did not score a complete and probably well-deserved 5 stars is that this author has somehow managed to write better books than this (see the Stormlight Archive book 4, The Rhythm of War). Yet despite that, this book is the perfect beginner novel for any reader diving into the cosmere (the universe in which this book takes place).

If you like to read and you can spare the time to read this masterpiece, then by all means, this book should become your top priority.

Book 2: Mysterious Benedict Society

  • Author: Trenton Stewart
  • Page Count: 512
  • Rating: 4 stars

Book Review

The Mysterious Benedict Society contains the adventures of 4 extraordinary children who must save the world from “The Emergency”. These four children are Reynard “Reynie” Multoon, George “Sticky” Washington, Kate Weatherall, and Constance Contrare. These four are all orphans, and after undergoing some mysterious tests, they are introduced to the genius Nicholas Benedict. These children then go on to save the world.

This book is part of a series, but it is the first and best of its kind. This book did get boring at times, but if you push through it, you'll be rewarded with a very satisfying ending (maybe with a cliffhanger). This book did lack total engagement, but if you have some free time, you should check this one out.

Book 3: The Giver

  • Author: Lois Lowry
  • Page Count: 179-256 (depends on print size)
  • Rating: 5 stars

Book Review

This one-of-a-kind fictional masterpiece is a must-read for anybody, anywhere, at any time. WARNING: Book may cause uncontrollable outbreaks of philosophical thoughts and joy.

The Giver takes place in a future where nobody feels anything at all, and where sameness rules. Jonas is a 12, is in his last year of traditional school, and is ready to be assigned his job. Unfortunately when the time comes to receive his job, something unexpected happens. Eventually, Jonas learns the ways of the past and discovers feelings. Bearing his burden, he leaves the society.

This book has won the John Newbery Award and is just an overall fantastic book. Please read this book; it's available at the Ellensburg Public Library, the MMS library, and in bookstores.

Get Out and Enjoy Fall

Mrs. C. Clark

As the weather gets cooler, people start to spend more time indoors. However, the fall weather in Kittitas County is typically warm and mild, so there's nothing stopping you from enjoying the great outdoors for another month or so. Sometimes it’s hard to figure out what to do, so here are some great ideas to help you get outside and experience the fall season.

Take a hike

This is a great way to see the changing leaves and other beautiful sights while getting great exercise. Umtanum Falls and Manastash Ridge are popular local hikes. To find information about hikes, look online or ask someone you know who hikes a lot.

Bike around

Biking is a great option for getting to commitments instead of taking a car, and is also pretty fun. Another plus of biking is that you can bike basically anywhere, like a meet-up with friends downtown or at a local park.

Take a walk

There are lots of interesting sights you can see in Ellensburg. It’s even more fun if you invite a friend or family member to walk with you. If you want to feel more in nature, you can go to Irene Rinehart Park, which is just a short bike ride or drive from downtown.

Run

Running is a great way to boost your mood, see interesting things, and get great exercise. Lace up those shoes and hit a trail! Bonus points if you take your dog (or your neighbor's dog) out with you.

Cross country is a team of individual athletes who run long distances. This year, there are over 60 athletes participating in cross-country.

The Cross Country team will hold its first meet on Thursday, September 25, at Rotary Park. I interviewed some of the kids on the team to see why they were doing cross country.

7th Grader Obi Carr says, “I did cross country because I prefer running over most sports.” Obi says he will try to shoot for at least 8-9 minutes in the upcoming meet.

Artist

Keath Osk is a Filipino singer-songwriter and multimedia artist who became popular on the app TikTok, Twitter,Instagram, and Youtube. They currently have seven characters that are voiced by Keath themselves, and have many songs. Keath is currently going on a tour. All their main characters have a song of origin, Keath sings the song on stage before actually releasing them to the public. These songs can be a new way to learn about folk music. Fun Fact! They’ve been on a build board for one of their newest singles!

The Larks

The four main characters are Peregrine, Cole, Clemente(or Clemmie), and Kingsley. Four young folk singers, ages 9-12, who call themselves ‘The Larks’. They wear masks that represent mythical beings called ‘The Harkers’. They perform songs and focus on visual storytelling.

These children have deep meanings in their songs but are easy to pass, but you get it once you pay close attention to the lyrics.

The Harkers

The Harkers are what the children’s masks represent. The Storyteller, Yarrow The Bellringer, The Enkindled, and The Croon.

They are all represented by the four main characters. The Harkers don’t know each other nor have they ever been seen together, or near each other. They all go where they’re needed the most, they share their stories from wherever they are at the moment.

The Storyteller: The Storyteller is a friend of the past unburrowing before by warble and string.

Cole: Cole is one who is more quiet. They are more like a rabbit, they are shy and tamed. But, on stage they are loud and more confident.

The Bellringer: The Bellringer chimes in with the future serenading serendipity.

Clemente: Clemente is one who is more gentle. They are soft spoken and can be very kind and gentle. You may never see them without a smile, they are polite and

The Elkindled: The Elkindled encourages equilibrium courting cadence among the untamed.

Kingsley: Kingsley is an outgoing child. They are often loud and childish, their personality is much more playful than the other children in the group considering they are the youngest of them all.

The Croon: The is a tempest

Peregrine: Peregrine is more quiet than the others, they are well maintained and much more serious. Peregrine isn’t more mature than the others but is more serious and dishonoring stillness, daughtering disharmony.

Little details

Cole and Clemente are actually in a relationship. In the world Meadowlark, genders don’t exist. It was said by Keath that you can call them whatever you want but later changed it to just they/them. Keath’s personal pronouns are they/it. If you are interested in watching or following them, you can find them on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, or Youtube! They go live on Instagram and post a lot on TikTok!

The release of Hollow Knight Silksong

Caden Irish

Before Hollow Knight: Silksong

Silksong is a highly anticipated sequel to the hit game Hollow Knight. Originally a DLC, Silksong is a 2D platformer that puts the player in control of Hornet, a spider-like, half-sister to the knight, the main character of Hollow Knight.

Silksong was announced seven years ago, on February 14, 2019, and was released earlier this year, on September 4. It took seven years because the team behind Silksong, Team Cherry, consists of only three people working on it.

Silksong’s release

When Silksong was released, the demand for it was so high that it crashed Steam, the Nintendo eShop, the PlayStation Store, and the Xbox Store.

TheGamer, recognizing Silksong’s success, published an article stating that the game “underpromised and overdelivered.” Many games had pushed back their release date because they knew that they couldn’t compete with Silksong.

Silksong is a very budget-friendly game, only costing $20.

Fall Hikes

Mrs. C. Clark

It may not officially be fal yet, but the cooler weather is definitely here! The warm and mild fall days make planning outdoor activities a must.

One must-do outdoor activity that everyone should have on their fall calendar is hiking. Hiking is a good way to get exercise while having a great time looking at wildlife, plants, flowers, and other beautiful sights. You never see the same thing twice, and the satisfaction of peaking a ridge or mountain after a hard uphill climb is hard to beat.

It’s sometimes hard to find a good trail that isn’t muddy, but for a few short months during the fall, every trail is ready to be conquered. Here are three hikes that are perfect for this time of year.

Umptanum Falls

  • Difficulty: easy
  • Length: 3 miles
  • Bonus: waterfall at the end
  • Time to drive: 25 minutes

This trail is a local gem, with lots of wildlife, vegetation, and of course, a waterfall at the end. It’s also very close to Ellensburg, with only a 10-mile drive between you and the trailhead.

Ginkgo Petrified Forest Trail

  • Difficulty: easy
  • Length: 1.5 or 2.5 miles
  • Bonus: petrified wood and petroglyphs
  • Time to drive: Around 35 minutes

Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park is an area by Vantage with lots of petrified wood (as the name suggests) and petroglyphs. The interpretive trail has the option of a 1.5 or 2.5-mile loop showing 22 different types of fossilized wood. It's about a 30-35 minute drive east along Vantage Highway to the trailhead.

Mount Si

  • Difficulty: challenging
  • Length: 8 miles
  • Bonus: incredible views
  • Time to drive: 80 minutes

Mount Si has beautiful views in the spring. However, there are 3100 feet of elevation gain in only four miles, so be sure to bring lots of water and be ready for a challenging hike. It takes about 80 minutes to drive to the North Bend area where you'll find the Mount Si trailhead.

Even if you don’t choose to do one of these hikes, make sure to get outdoors and appreciate the fall weather while it lasts. It will be over before you know it!

For even more hiking trails, the Washington Trail Association hike finder map has lots of good information.
