First Friday at Printmakers at the Tannery will feature woodblock prints by PATT member Frank Trueba and quilts by guest artist Pam Rocco.
Frank Trueba will be showing recent work replicating Gee’s Bend quilts by way of mokuhanga or Japanese woodblock printing. Mokuhanga is a centuries-old Japanese woodblock printing technique that uses water-based inks, carving tools, and Japanese paper. In addition to the 14 quilt prints, Frank will also exhibit some other recent work.
Pam Rocco, a Santa Cruz quilt maker, will be exhibiting a number of actual quilts. After graduating from U.C. Berkeley in 1968, she joined Teacher Corps and was assigned to Appalachia. She lived in Jackson, KY., which was, and still is, a center of traditional quilt making. Years later, at a quilt exhibit at De Young Museum in San Francisco in 2006, she was inspired by the work of the many fine quilters of Gee's Bend.
Both artists will be present First Friday evening to answer any questions you may have.
