At Long Custom Building and Remodeling, we believe that exceptional results begin with a thoughtful, transparent design and planning process. Before we ever lift a hammer, our team guides you through a series of organized phases designed to ensure that every detail—from layout and selections to budget and timeline—is aligned with your vision and expectations. This document provides an initial overview of each phase of our Design & Planning Process, giving you a clear understanding of what to expect along the way. While each project is unique, these phases outline the general flow of work leading up to the final contract, when all design decisions and material selections have been made. Each phase includes customized timelines and milestones specific to your project, allowing flexibility as your design evolves. Our goal is to create realistic expectations, promote clear communication, and make the journey from concept to contract as seamless and enjoyable as possible.

PHASE I

We want to get to know you, your project, your likes and dislikes. Tell us everything. Our Design Team will walk with you step by step through the design process and will take the time to understand your needs and what your goals are for the project. Don't hold back!

Deliverables:

  • Site visit or visit in our office for initial discussion with designer. Pre-production manager may attend based on the scope of the project.
  • Survey of Space (If visit is on site)
  • In depth conversation related to design needs for the project.

Your Design Homework:

  • Before and after this meeting, please send inspiration photos related to the project.
  • Questions and concerns regarding the design.

Estimated Timeline: Within 2-3 weeks of introductory meeting.

PHASE II

Time to get your ideas on paper. We listened and now it's time to make sure it works. Function first! The Design Team will explore all of the options that fit your needs and make sure it all still works in the space. This is your opportunity to truly make it your own.

Deliverables:

  • Drawings with listed dimensions and measurements
  • Conceptual layouts and design options
  • Preliminary design review meeting

Your Design Homework:

  • Review the conceptual layouts.
  • Send the Design Team questions and concerns related to the drawings.
  • Choose the layout you would like to work with and let us know.

Estimated Timeline: 3-4 weeks

PHASE III

The Design Team has determined your style and are putting together the final pieces. At this point, you have chosen the layout you would like to work with. The Designers fine tune it while selections are being made to complete the visual story.

Deliverables:

  • Finalized layout and design details
  • Initial selections list

Your Design Homework:

  • Begin to review selections for your project.

Estimated Timeline: 4-8 weeks

PHASE IV

The drawings and selections have been made! This is the time for you to review your project. We want to make sure you love everything that is going into your space.

Deliverables:

  • Final selections sheet to be approved (via Buildertrend)
  • Confirmed design drawings to be approved (via Buildertrend)

Your Design Homework:

  • Approve your final selections.
  • Approve your final drawings.

Estimated Timeline: 2-4 weeks

PHASE V

After final reviews of everything, the Design Team works closely with the estimating team. All of the details and costs for the project are added and finalized for you to review.

Deliverables:

  • Detailed project estimate·
  • Contract released for client preview via Buildertrend

Design Homework:

  • Review the contract for your project.

Estimated Timeline: 2-4 weeks

PHASE VI

You did it! The design has been completed. Once the contracts are finalized and signed, everything is handed off to the production team and we can officially begin to build your approved designs.

Deliverables:

  • Team meeting with client to review and revise contract as needed
  • Signed contract
  • Estimated project timeline
  • Transition to production team

Your Design Homework:

  • You are done and now it is time to let your project unfold before your eye.

Estimated Timeline: 1-2 weeks

Next Steps

After this phase, your project transitions into Pre-Construction Planning—where logistics, permitting, and site preparations begin—followed by the Construction Phase. At every stage, our team remains focused on delivering an elevated experience and a finished space you’ll love for years to come.
