Taking Action
For us, taking action is about getting involved to make a difference – and having fun while doing it! Byron students have been very busy this year…
Hats off to our Eco Ambassadors! The Primary team earned Plastic Clever School status while Secondary students participated in a tree-planting event on Penteli with Oloi Mazi Boroume (We All Can Together).
Our Primary students adopted Martha the bear through ARCTUROS and Phoebe, a blind turtle at the Sea Turtle Rescue Centre in Glyfada, and they have been supporting their development closely.
Our Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and Breast Cancer Awareness Month fundraising and awareness campaigns in aid of Greek NGO Alma Zois have moved into their third year, with €1,500 raised for the latter alone. A further €1,100 were raised for Ormos Psychiatric Shelter and the Attica MITERA Child Protection Branch by our Primary leadership team, who then bought and delivered gifts personally to these children in need.
Key Stage 3 led the Christmas Charity Appeal for Pallini Food Bank, delivering the goods personally in aid of 200 disadvantaged families. Our Sixth Form teams continued our tradition of gaining fun volunteering and work experience at the St Paul’s Harvest Festival and Christmas Bazaar. Meanwhile, our Year 6 teams in their hi-vis jackets rescued over 1,300 unsold fruits and vegetables during their Friday visits to the farmers’ market for KEA Hara, an NGO supporting people with special needs.
In further new firsts, our EAL students took the impressive initiative to organise a drive for the ITHACA homelessness charity, collecting and delivering 35 care bags to its immediate-relief and mobile laundry centre. Our Key Stage 4 leaders led the ‘Treasure Boxes’ project in aid of refugee support organisation MiAZo. Not to be outdone, Sixth Formers volunteered at Humanity Greece’s soup kitchen, in which they sourced, prepared, and served meals to homeless individuals – meaningful and exciting partnerships we hope to repeat!
Finally, a shout-out to our wonderful school nurse Mr Stavros for organising our first-ever blood donation event on the school site, supported by TZANEIO Hospital. This had the added impact of uniting students, staff, and parents with presentations and a blood donation-themed art competition.
