After three years of drought in Pyrenees mountains, skiing has been challenging. Despite the lack of snow, the resorts remained open, and the groomed slopes provided better-than-expected conditions. In March, the drought ended, bringing much-needed relief to the mountains. Cerler, Baqueira-Beret, Boí Taüll, and Grandvalira offer world-class skiing with distinctly unique experiences.
In January, Cerler received minimal snowfall, and the resort had to produce artificial snow to maintain the most popular runs with groomed pistes. On day two, the resort experienced a light dusting of snow, resulting in windy conditions with low visibility. The Aragonese town of Benasque is an excellent place stay, boasting charming architecture and great shopping opportunities.
The north facing resort of Baqueira-Beret with 167 km of skiable pistes, usually has the best conditions for skiing in the Pyrenees. The impeccably groomed slopes offer excellent connecting points to the Beret and Bon Aigua sectors. Nearby Vielha has excellent restaurants a lively après-ski scene.
Despite being a relatively small resort, Boí Taüll has some of the best skiing for all levels. On this long weekend, the resort got dumped with as much as a meter of snow at the upper elevations making avalanche risk high. Hiring a ski monitor was a great way to ski amidst very difficult visibility.
The final ski trip of the season took place just after a week of snowy weather at Grandvalira in Andorra. The conditions could not have been better. With 215 skiable kilometers of terrain the route from the Canillo sector to the Pas de la Casa sector was probably the most intense of the season and absolutely glorious.
