Each year on April 26, the global innovation community comes together to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day, a time to reflect on how creativity, innovation, and IP rights drive progress and enrich our lives. This year’s theme "Feel the Beat of IP" celebrates music as a universal form of creative expression that brings people together and plays a role in so many areas of life — from emotional wellbeing to cultural identity.

Music is a powerful force that transcends borders and connects cultures around the world. USF Professor Ya-Hui Cheng's recent book explores these global ties through the lens of Chinese popular music, uncovering how sound reflects cultural identity and social change. Her copyrighted book, which illustrates how Chinese popular music is intertwined with folk traditions and the global pop soundscape, has been recognized for its outstanding contributions to the field.

When most people think of tech transfer, music, books and copyrights might not be the obvious connection. But this year’s World IP Day theme shines a spotlight on how intellectual property supports the music industry—safeguarding the contributions of songwriters, composers, performers, and authors. At USF, Tech Transfer has helped protect and advance a wide range of music-related innovations, from The Comet’s Tail jazz CD produced by the USF Center for Jazz Composition and Chuck Owens, to an Intelligent Music Therapy Platform designed to support respiratory health. These examples reflect the power of IP to amplify creativity and extend its impact to diverse audiences.

Established in 2000, World IP Day was created to raise awareness about the importance of protecting creative works—ranging from music and art to literature, symbols, and inventions. For USF, it’s an opportunity to join the global celebration of intellectual property and its impact, while showcasing the university’s contributions to innovation, economic growth, and cultural advancement.
