Hen Club update

We have introduced our chick 'Bia' to her new home and she has been busy getting acquainted with her new flock. We are looking forward to 6 more hens joining our Byron Bay High School Agriculture Plot in August. The students are taking on more responsibility in caring for young chickens.

Bee Club

The Beekeeping Club is busier than ever! They are trialing new Bee products to share with our local community from beeswax wraps, to candles, and crayons!

Steve Fowler, local beekeeping guru and owner of NR Beekeeping Supplies has kindly donated multiple days of training to our beekeeping club and 3 poly hives.

The students spent the first incursion of Term 3 learning how to move colonies into their new hives from their old ones.

We have lots of honey jars being prepared for sale from our recent honey extraction.

Open Boys Soccer

vs Kirrawee High School

Last term, in a thrilling display of schoolboy soccer played at the highest level, our Open Boys Soccer team hosted Kirrawee High School on a cold and windy afternoon. In a tightly contested final that showcased skill, determination, and tactical discipline from both sides, the stakes were high, with a place in the final 8 in the State on offer for the winning side.

The match kicked off with intensity from the outset, as both teams looked to assert dominance early. The opening minutes saw end-to-end football, with midfield battles being hotly contested and each side probing for opportunities.

Kirrawee struck first, capitalising on a swift counterattack that somehow eluded our traditionally tight defence, sending their players into raptures. However, typical for our boys, we responded with composed resilience, our equaliser coming from a perfectly executed free kick by Cooper B, ensuring we were back in the game. Before the half was out, Kirrawee managed to take the lead, as we headed into the break, the scoreboard read 2–1 in favour of the opposition.

The second half continued in the same vein, with both teams displaying exceptional ball control, sharp passing, and relentless pace. Both teams pressed hard, testing the goalkeepers on several occasions, but neither were able to break through. Our star keeper, Nash M, brilliantly saved a penalty shot, giving Byron some much needed belief. Our boys never gave up, and continued to attack, only for Kirrawee’s defence to hold strong, and the opposition sealed the win with a clinical third goal midway through the second half.

Despite the 1-3 score line, the match remained balanced throughout, with both teams showcasing why they had earned their places in this stage of the competition.

Our school is incredibly proud of the Byron Bay boys — not just for reaching the final 16 of such a high-level competition, but for the way they played with heart, determination, and true sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Represented by students across four year levels, they consistently displayed skill, teamwork, and resilience in every match. Just as importantly, their conduct on the field was outstanding; they represented Byron Bay with integrity, respect, and pride, earning praise from officials and opposition teams.

The entire school community congratulates them on a remarkable campaign.

Celebrating Indigo's Rugby success!

Photo and story courtesy of M Simpson

Congratulations to Year 12 student Indigo S on her selection to the NSW U18 girl’s Country Rugby Union squad. Indigo travelled to Queensland 2 weeks ago to play in the Australian Junior Rugby Union Championships with the team, achieving solid wins over Queensland Country and South Australia.

After a narrow loss against NSW City, the team is looking to rectify this result this weekend in the NSW Championship match in Newcastle.

Indigo will also be heading to the Santos Festival of Rugby in September in Narrabri where the girls will be back on the field playing alongside the Australian Wallaroos, the NSW Waratah women, and up against the other U18 girl’s state teams. She thanks the school community for their ongoing support in assisting her to participate and achieve at this level.

The deadline for all orders is Monday 28 July (Term 3 | Week 2).

Our Year 11 Student Design Team have worked hard to produce 3 great designs for students to choose from:

Important whole school reminders

Sick Bay Procedure

What happens if your child is feeling unwell at school?

With the winter cold and flu season upon us, it is very important that students who are feeling unwell advise their teacher and go to the Sick Bay.

If your child isn't feeling well, our First Aid Officer will phone or text you to come and collect them. In this case a parent/carer (or one of the nominated Emergency Contacts on file) will need to come into the school Office to collect your child in person.

It is vital that the correct procedure is followed enabling our First Aid Officer to monitor your child and prevent the spread of infection to other students and staff.

A reminder that students are NOT permitted to use their phones while at school and messaging their parents directly is not our procedure. Warnings and detentions can be issued to any student who is using their phone whilst at school.

We thank you for your assistance and for working with us to keep our community safe and well.

Student timetables

Students in Years 7-10 have received their new Semester 2 timetables

Your child's timetable is very important. It tells them what classes they have each day - where they need to be and when. By looking at their timetable they can also work out what books and equipment to bring to school, and the names of their teachers for each subject.

Students need to bring a copy of their timetable to school every day.

What can your child do if they have lost their timetable?

If your child loses the printout of their timetable we encourage them to independently:

  • Visit their Year Advisor in their faculty staffroom to request another printout.
  • Log into their Student Portal and access the online version through the 'Edval' tab - they can do this at home or in the school Library (see instructions below).
  • Visit the timetable checking screen on the counter at the office - students will need to scan their student card to access this service independently.

NOTE: Due to the morning workload on the counters and phones, our office staff CAN NOT help your child access another copy of their timetable before the bell goes. It is recommended that students have a look at (and print out where possible) their timetable online before coming to school.

Accessing timetables online

Timetables are available for viewing online through the student's Department of Education Student Portal, via the 'Edval' tab. This can be done from home or at school.

If accessing the portal from home, simply Google 'Department of Education NSW student portal'. Your child will enter the username and password that they use at school.

Year 10 are off to the Northern Rivers Careers Expo

Next Tuesday 29 July, in Lismore

Year 10 students from Byron Bay High School have the opportunity to attend the annual Northern Rivers Careers Expo in Lismore on Tuesday 29 July, from 9am to 1:30 pm. Parents and carers, if you haven't already registered your child for this excursion, please check your emails for the consent and payment link.

Students will leave BBHS on a chartered bus at 9 am and return to school for Periods 4 and 5 (timetable DAY 2). They are to bring the necessary books and equipment for these classes.

** Any Year 10 students NOT attending this excursion will attend regular classes at school **

The information gained from the expo will help students to make informed choices regarding their Year 11 subject selections, plus help them to find out more about future career and education pathways to give them the best start in their future careers.

It is important for high school students to start thinking about career options from Year 10 onwards. At the expo, they will be able to enjoy small workshops, engage with career advisors at stalls and take-home information goodie packs.

The expo is extremely beneficial for all Year 10 students, and they are encouraged to attend. Exhibitors will include:

Apprenticeship organisations, Career Pathway advisers, employers from across many different industries, university and tertiary education institutions, training providers, and volunteer organisations.

Please contact Ms Sergi (Careers Advisor) if you have any questions.
