Settling in Nursery, autumn term, week 3

It’s been a great week in nursery, and we’re really starting to see the children settle in and feel at home. We have a truly special group this year: kind, thoughtful, and already showing fantastic listening skills. Parents, take a moment to give yourselves some credit, your children are an absolute joy to work with!

This week, our focus has been on the phrase “I can do it myself,” encouraging the children to be a little braver and more independent in their daily activities. We shared the story 'Everybody Poos', which explores how babies grow into children who can use the toilet independently. From there, we extended our conversations about independence to other areas: using a knife and fork at mealtimes, putting on coats, playing without direct adult involvement, and patiently waiting their turn—for example, when waiting for a biscuit at snack time.

Looking after the babies and learning how to look after themselves as 'big kids'.
Practising using a knife and fork correctly.
Cleaning up after themselves.
Trying their best to put their own coats on.

Another highlight this week has been the children’s fantastic attitude toward writing. Many have been eager to see their work displayed on our writing board, and have been choosing to practise their special letters during free play. A big thank-you to all the parents who supported this at home after seeing the Seesaw activity—it really makes a difference!

Taking pride in their early writing skills.

I’ll leave you with a little snapshot of our play this week. During this first half term, the children are busy building friendships, learning to share, and developing the skills to solve conflicts when they arise: important foundations that are all practised through play.

Thank you for reading, and for all your continued support. We’re so proud of how much the children are already learning and growing, it’s shaping up to be a wonderful term!
