This week we completed our art lessons by creating abstract memory boxes based on the evacuation of children during World War 2. Some of us decided to recreate images about what life was like for children who had been evacuated to the Countryside and others chose life in the cities. We used our knowledge of 3D Sculpture and layering to aid the effects of our work. Where would you have preferred to have been living?
In English we took on the role of either a mother, child, father/soldier or Government worker during World War 2 and discussed the different viewpoints of Evacuation. Should children have been evacuated or not? We used our talk tactics and sentence stems to build on what each other said. Extra information was added in to the conversations to see if anyone would change their mind and some people did!
We used these discussions to help us complete our balanced arguments in our writing lessons.
We also used Drama for Learning to become a class of children who were being evacuated. We all had to complete our luggage labels, collect our suitcases and get on the train to Beadnell. On the train we opened our suitcases to see what our mother's had packed for us. Luckily some of us had jam sandwiches! When we arrived we were taken to the village hall and picked by the local villages. Some of us were happier with our new families than others! We used this to start to write our letters to our mothers from our new homes.
We were really happy to hear from our friends in Mallorca this week about a project they are completing about Peace. You can see their corridor above. We decided to join them in making our own Peace Cranes which are now hanging in our classroom too.
Well done to everyone for their excellent assembly this week and thank you to all parents who attended. Congratulations to our star of the week and those who acheived a Golden Book award too!
