Kia ora e te whānau, it was awesome to see so many of our families at last week's assembly. The assembly was full of student performances and it always means so much more when there is a great audience to perform for. We also got to celebrate Max's achievements from a robotics competition in the holidays where he received two medals. The assembly finished with some songs and dances where everyone got to join in including Mrs O and some of our parents!

Lateness
This term we have noticed an increase in the number of students arriving late or 'just in time' to class. It may not seem like much, but this can start the day off on the wrong foot for kids. A day starting badly can lead to a day ending badly as little things can have a tendency to snowball for young people.
Arriving at school by 8:45 allows students to settle into the day, complete their arriving in class routines, connect with friends, and start the day feeling good. Arriving late can make your child feel awkward and socially anxious because they feel like “Everyone is looking at me.”
Regular lateness can contribute to higher levels of stress and anxiety for both your child, their siblings, and you. You may find yourself yelling or being grumpy just to get your child to school which means your relationship with your child is often on a back foot. Or it might be easier just to ‘give in’ which can lead to empowering their lateness.
Making that extra effort to get to school 10 minutes earlier can have such a positive impact on the day for both you and your child.
Mitey Update
Nukumea Primary is a Mitey school. Mitey is a Sir John Kirwan Foundation initiative and is an evidence-based approach to teaching mental health education in schools. You can see Mitey in action here.
Mitey is provided free to all schools and relies on the generosity of our communities to support its great work. The East Coast Bays Football Club is holding a charity weekend on 22-23 August 2025 to raise awareness and funds for Mitey. Sir John Kirwan is speaking at the clubrooms on the Friday night which you are all welcome to attend. On Saturday there is a charity game day and an online auction. Check out the details at https://ecbafc.nz/mitey-and-sir-john-kirwan-foundation-charity-weekend. It would be wonderful for our community to come out in support of Mitey!
Semester 2 Basketball Underway
The Semester 2 Basketball season has started with Nukumea having two teams. The Nukumea Nets are Year 1 and 2 players, and the Nukumea Knicks have Years 4, 5 and 6 on their team. Both teams train at school on Monday afternoons and then play their games later in the week at Stanmore Bay Leisure Centre.
This week we are giving a special shout out to our Nets team who had a super close game, losing by 1 point in their first game of this competition. Congratulations to Spenser and Melody who had their first ever games of Miniball for Nukumea!
Have a great week and stay healthy amongst all these winter bugs going around!
