Campbell Law Alumni Association to host virtual CLE on Tuesday, Feb. 4
The Campbell Law Alumni Association plans to host a virtual two-hour CLE from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, Assistant Dean of External Relations Megan Sherron '10 has announced. The presentation, which is sponsored by Chaplin and Associates Inc., will offer one hour of ethics credit and one hour of general credit Continuing Education Credit (CLE) from the North Carolina State Bar. This CLE is offered FREE to Campbell Law Alumni Association members as well as Campbell Law faculty/staff and students. The cost is $50 for all others. Learn more at this link.
Campbell Law Dean J. Rich Leonard publishes ‘The Grandma Stories’
Lawyers Mutual Consulting & Services (LCMS) Press has announced the publication of “The Grandma Stories” written by Campbell Law Dean J. Rich Leonard. Growing up in Welcome, North Carolina, Leonard spent much of his childhood on his grandparents’ farm. As a child, he was enchanted by stories of his mother and her siblings on the farm during the Great Depression. “This is a quirky set of stories set on my grandparents’ Davie County dairy farm decades ago,” Leonard explains. “It grew out of bedtime stories I told my children over the years, which they labeled ‘The Grandma Stories.’” And while the stories, which range from comical to nail biting to triumphant, that make up the book are primarily aimed at children, Leonard adds it also appeals to a wider audience. “I have found it has a surprising resonance for folks who grew up in rural areas sometime ago,” he said. Mary Accardi chosen as ‘Unsung Hero’ by N.C. Lawyers Weekly
Mary Accardi has been chosen as an “Unsung Hero” by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly. Accardi has served as the paralegal and office manager for the Gailor Family Law Litigation Clinic since its opening in August 2021. Accardi has been a cornerstone of the Clinic, providing unwavering support to clients during some of the most pivotal moments in their lives. In the magazine article, Accardi credits divine intervention for pointing the way to her career as a paralegal. A graduate of Meredith College, Accardi returned to her alma mater to earn a paralegal certificate and eventually found her way to Campbell Law. Accardi says her greatest source of pride comes from the students she impacts. “I am moved to my soul when former students stay in touch,” she said. “It confirms that I may have, in some small way, made a difference.” Learn more at this link.
Richard Waugaman III '12, other alumni named among 'Leaders in the Law' by N.C. Lawyers Weekly
Clinical Professor Richard A. Waugaman III ’12 has been chosen among North Carolina Lawyers Weekly’s most recent “Leaders in the Law” along with several alumni. Leaders in the Law are members of the bar who have made important contributions to the practice of law in the state and to the local legal community and/or the community at larger, according to the publication. Also chosen among the “Leaders in the Law” are Chad W. Essick ’06 of Poyner Spruill, Jennifer Jernigan Slusser ’98, who serves as Johnston County Attorney, and Gene Bradley Tanner ’07 of Parker Bryan Family Law. Campbell Law alumna, student co-author book about prenups
A Campbell Law alumna and a third-year student have co-authored a new book about prenups. Gailor Family Law Litigation Clinic Staff Attorney Carlie Spencer ‘20 and Olivia Reiff ’25 recently published “The Prenup Girl’s Guide to a Successful Marriage.” The book is available for purchase on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. According to the authors, the book ensures prenups are not just to protect your assets, but “to help you and your partner have a successful marriage.” According to Spencer and Reiff prenups “are for anyone who wants to enter marriage with eyes wide open and a plan in place.” The book works to bust myths and attack the stigma against prenups. In the book, the authors describe prenups as a “personalized financial security blanket.” Many are under the impression the prenups are only for wealthy individuals, however Spencer says, “By busting these myths, we hope you see prenups for what they really are: a smart, loving way to protect yourselves and each other.” Learn more at this link.
Campbell Law students receive Teague Campbell’s 2024 DEI scholarships
Not one but two Campbell Law students have each received Teague Campbell’s 2024 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Scholarship in honor of Charlotte W. Clark. Elizabeth Sharpe ’27 and Elissa Garcia ’27 were awarded the scholarships at a luncheon the firm held on Jan. 23, 2025, according to Associate Director of Financial Aid Lisa Clark. “Both ladies were very impressive, and it was hard to select just one, so we added a second scholarship to reward both of them,” explained Christine Parr, director of Human Resources at Teague Campbell. The $2,000 scholarships Sharpe and Garcia received are in honor of Clark, who was dedicated to serving her community and exemplified the firm’s mission, according to the firm’s website. Campbell Law is looking for a few good judges for national trial competition March 6-9
Campbell Law is co-hosting the 2025 Regional Tournament for the national American Advocates for Justice (AAJ) Student Trial Advocacy Competition (STAC) on March 6-9. The other co-hosts are Milberg Law and the University of South Carolina. Each year, AAJ hosts the STAC, showcasing top future trial lawyers. This tournament is one of the premier trial advocacy competitions in the country, and the winning team members are awarded a scholarship and invited to join AAJ at its annual convention in July. With 16 teams – two from Campbell Law — set to compete in person in the Regional Tournament, the competition will be held in the Wake County Courthouse beginning Thursday, March 6, and continuing through Sunday, March 9. Assistant Professor Krista Bordatto writes two law review articles
Campbell Law Assistant Legal Research and Writing Professor Krista Bordatto has written two recent law review articles. The first, an article for the University of New Hampshire Law Review entitled “Public Trials and Plain Error,” 23 U.N.H. L. Rev. 65 (2025), which she co-authored with Santa Clara Law Associate Clinical Professor Stephen E. Smith, was published on Jan. 10. Another article, entitled “The Sexual Violence Epidemic vs. the Uniform Code of Military Justice & Feres Doctrine,” is forthcoming for publication this spring in the Gonzaga Law Review. Bordatto teaches Legal Research and Writing I and II. Her scholarship emphasizes the disparities that exist within the Armed Forces legal justice system and their relation to the civilian sector. Bordatto began her legal career as a litigator, focused on labor and employment, civil and appellate cases. She earned her law degree from St. Thomas University College of Law (magna cum laude), a Master of Science in Couples and Family Counseling from St. Thomas University and B.S. in psychology with a minor in English from the University of Oregon. Judge Tom Murry ’07 sworn-in as judge of N.C. Court of Appeals
Campbell Law alumnus Judge Tom Murry ’07 was formally sworn in as a judge of the North Carolina Court of Appeals during an investiture ceremony held at the historic North Carolina State Capitol on Thursday, January 16. Murry won Seat 12 on the Court of Appeals in November 2024. Murry has said the primary goal of anyone who wants to serve as a judge is to be viewed as fair. He added his experience as a state prosecutor is very important for the work the appellate court does. The ceremony for Murry was attended by justices of the Supreme Court of North Carolina, judges of the North Carolina Court of Appeals, as well as Murry’s family, friends, and colleagues, according to a press release sent out by the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts (NCAOC). Colonel Michael J. McCann presented Murry to the Court, and Chief Judge Chris Dillon of the North Carolina Court of Appeals administered the oath of office. School of Business hosts 2025 Economic Forecast Roundtable
Campbell University’s Lundy-Fetterman School of Business hosted a panel of leaders from across North Carolina to discuss the state of the economy and where it’s headed in 2025. The event was held at Campbell Law on Jan. 2. The “2025 Economic Forecast Roundtable” was co-hosted with Business North Carolina magazine and moderated by the magazine’s Publisher Ben Kinney. “The event went off very well,” said Dean Kevin O'Mara. “I estimate we had well over 100 people attend. The February issue of Business N.C. will feature an article on the roundtable.” Dr. Michael Seibert, director of the business school’s Graduate and External Programs, helped organize the event, which had its largest turnout yet, O’Mara added. Campbell Law to host N.C. Court of Appeals oral arguments on Feb. 17
Campbell Law will host a session of the North Carolina Court of Appeals beginning at 2 p.m on Monday, Feb. 17, in the Boyce Courtroom. The presiding judges for this session will be made up of Campbell Law alumni — Judges John Tyson ’79, Donna Stroud ’88, Toby Hampson ’02, Jeff Carpenter ’03 and Tom Murry ‘07, Dean J. Rich Leonard has announced. Campbell Law students are encouraged to attend the proceedings to view the presentation of two cases – one criminal and one civil, Leonard said. The cases presented for this session will be COA24-373 State v. Ducker with Hampson, Stroud and Tyson presiding and COA24-440 Cooper v. Berger with Carpenter, Murry and Tyson presiding. Advocates for each case will present their oral arguments before the Court, which will review each case thoroughly before issuing judgments. Advocates will then have the option of appealing the ruling to the North Carolina Supreme Court. Learn more at this link.
Campbell Law Student Bar Association Golf Tournament
The annual Campbell Law Student Bar Association (SBA) Golf Tournament is fast approaching, and will take place on Friday, March 21. The tournament will be held at Eagle Ridge Golf Club with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Ticket prices are $30 for students, $50 for family, faculty and staff, $75 for alumni and $100 for attorneys. The tournament will have four (4) players on each team. If you are a single player without a team you will automatically be assigned to a team with other single players. There will be holding a longest-drive competition as well as a closest-to-the-pin challenge. There will also be prizes for the first place team, second place team and third place team. All proceeds will go to the Campbell Law SBA, which is the governing student government body over law school students, and is responsible for planning a wide variety of law school events and providing funding to all student organizations on campus.
