Maths

We will be learning;

To 20 and Beyond

Build numbers 10-20

  • Use 1:1 correspondence to count groups of 11, 12, 13
  • know the composition of 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 eg 11 has 10 and 1
  • Count back and forward from different starting points, know which number comes before and after a given number and place numbers in order.
  • Count verbally beyond 20
How many now?

Addition

Working within 10 to add more. Know that the quantity of a group can be changed by adding more and use stem sentences. Eg First there were 6, then 2 more were added, now there are 8. There are 8 altogether.

Finding out how many were added by missing out the then part of the stem sentence eg There were 5 children on the bus, then we don’t know how many more got on, but now there are 8 children on the bus. Use real objects such as 10 frames and counters to work out the missing number.

Subtraction

Working within 10 to take away. Know the quantity of a group can be changed by taking some away and use stem sentence. Eg, First there were 8, then 4 were taken away, now there are 4, there are 4 left.

Manipulate, compose and decompose

Select shapes for a purpose- when building and making shape pictures children to use stem sentences such as “ I have chosen a ____because____” “This one doesn’t belong because____” “I need a ____ to complete my picture”

Rotate and manipulate shapes- Learn about how shapes will appear when they are rotated. Use jigsaws to help see shape rotations.

Explain shape arrangements- Use positional language vocabulary such as next to, in front of, behind to explain where shapes are in relation to each other.

Compose and decompose shapes- Learn that shapes can be combined to make new shapes. Learn that shapes can be separated to make new shapes.

Copy a 2D shape picture- Explore shape pictures and copy them, describing the shapes they are using.

Find 2D shapes within 3D shapes- Build structures using 3D shapes and talk about the 2D shapes that they can see.

Literacy

We will spend 3 weeks on the text “Mr Gumpy’s Outing” and will learn to retell the story using words and actions. We will innovate the story by changing parts to make our own version and then retell our new version using words and actions.

Using the story “Handa’s Surprise” we will learn about similarities and differences between life in this country and life in Africa.

We will continue to write for different purposes writing simple sentences that can be read by ourselves and others using known phonics sounds and red words.

Phonics

We will learn these digraphs (2 letters that make 1 sound) and trigraph (3 letters that make 1 sound) and write words with those sounds;

We will learn these red words (words than cannot be sounded out and have to be learnt by sight)

There is no phonics assessment this half term. As we move onto the yellow colour expected level books you will notice that the amount of text and red words has increased. Please help your child to learn all of the red words in their wallet by sight to help with their reading fluency.

During our daily handwriting part of phonics we will continue to learn to form letters correctly and will now move on to writing sentences using the weeks taught sound and red words.

PSED

Jigsaw - Relationships. 1 lesson per week

  • My Family and Me! - Identify jobs some of the jobs I do in my family and how I feel like I belong.
  • Make Friends Part 1 - I know how to make friends and stop myself from feeling lonely.
  • Make Friends Part 2 - I can think of ways to solve problems and stay friends.
  • Falling out and Bullying - I am starting to understand the impact of unkind words. I can use calm me time to manage my feelings.
  • Being the best friends, we can be - I know how to be a good friend.

Knowledge and understanding of the world

We will learn about the season Spring by going on a Spring walk within the school grounds and;

  • Explore the natural world around us.
  • Describe what we see, hear and feel whilst outside.
  • Understand the effect of changing seasons on the natural world around us.
  • Refer back to prior learning about the seasons and build upon this.
  • Recall a familiar route to be able to draw a class map.

Through a topic on animals we will be learning to;

  • Identify why habitats are important to animals
  • Identify some animals from specific habitats
  • Understand hibernation and its purposes
  • Discuss why some animals are suited for different habitats

Expressive arts and design

  • Painting - Develop colour mixing and paint Spring pictures.
  • Drawing - Drawing different animals and drawing animal patterns eg zebra strips.
  • Designing and making - Make and test boats using tin foil and junk modelling.
  • Music - Learning to sing new songs and to play more than 1 note on the glockenspiel in time to the music.

RE

PE

In preparation for sports day on Thursday 22nd May we will learn and practise the events as part of our weekly PE lessons.

Outdoor Learning

The children will have access to our outdoor learning environment every day and in all weathers! Please make sure they bring a coat to school every day and have a pair of wellingtons that stay at school.

The children will be developing language and communication as well as learning to work as a team, taking turns and negotiating plans using the outdoor resources. We will be using not only our outdoor area but schools’ extensive grounds including the wilderness area.

How you can support at home

As discussed during your parents evening meetings last term your support with hearing your child read at home is crucial to them developing fluency. Please aim to read their new book at least 3 times a week, if not more and remember to write in the reading record.

Continue to use the digraph and trigraph flash cards and red words in your child’s wallet to help your child quickly recognise them in their books.

Please make sure your child has their book bag in school every day.

We are working hard at school for children to be able to independently write simple sentences using correct letter formation as this is a requirement for achieving the writing early learning goal by the middle of June. We will provide paper and some caption pictures for you to use at home. Examples of simple sentences are;

Tools in a shed. Fish and chips on a dish. I can see a boat.
