HOUSE OF DAHL

A RESTORED AND RENOVATED HOME AT NUSFJORD VILLAGE & RESORT

JANUARY 15, 2025 . . .Norway’s rich seafaring history comes alive at Nusfjord Village & Resort, a traditional fishing village in the Lofoten archipelago perched on a picturesque harbour where soaring fjords meet the salty breeze and dramatic seas.

With a total of 26 cabins at the resort, the most exclusive accommodation is the House of Dahl – which was built in 1926. The former home of Hans Dahl, one of the original owners of the village, has undergone an extensive restoration and has reopened in December 2024. Preserving authenticity has always been a hallmark of Nusfjord and the renovation of the house was carried out with elegant design and amazing attention to detail. The private retreat is situated within the village and its slightly elevated position offers exceptional views over the sea and harbour from every window.

Dahlgården can accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 elegant bedrooms all with en-suite baths. An elaborate dining room, a comfortable living room, an inspiring library, a charming balcony and a dedicated outdoor area are yours to enjoy. Before guests lay their heads to rest, they are treated to a bedtime story of Norse folklore placed on their nightstands every evening.

The house also has a library collected by Mr. Dahl– books are in Norwegian and range from historical and cultural depth with titles like The Kon-Tiki Expedition (1948), World War II, and Norwegian wildlife. Literary Classics include renowned Norwegian authors like Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and Trygve Gulbrandsen. For popular fiction Dahl read names like Sven Elvestad, a Norwegian journalist and author who was popular for writing detective novels and Canadian writer Mazo de la Roche, best known for her Jalna novels, one of the most popular book series of her time in the 1920’s. Even if you can’t read Norwegian, holding a book and turning a page still has value to admire the collection.

For chess lovers, a set sits atop the old chess table that has an inscription that reads: 'Sig. Simeoni Amilcare in Stazione San Pier D'Arena Liguria'. Hans Dahl, the owner, made multiple trips to Italy to sell stockfish, and this inscription is likely linked to his business activities. Italy, including Liguria, was a key market for Norwegian stockfish, and the inscription may reference one of Hans Dahl's business contacts or trading partners. This discovery confirms the direct historical connection between the table and the stockfish trade from Nusfjord to Italy. Trading dates back to medieval times due to the ace techniques used by the Norwegians to preserve fish for very long periods.

Rates and availability: Opened in December of 2024, the house of Dahl can accommodate up to 10 guests and is bookable year-round. Rates begin at 30,000 NOK per night. Included is a Champagne welcome, breakfast daily at Restaurant Karoline and complimentary access to the Nusfjord Arctic Wellness.

HERITAGE AT EVERY TURN

There is no doubt the spirit of the hardened fishermen who set out to sea still lives on in the village. You’ll find heritage at every turn and in the buildings that make up the Nusfjord experience where five protected buildings are under the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage. The traditional fishing boat Elltor is docked at the centuries old wharf and is ready for excursions where the captain regales guests with ancient stories of Norse myths and legends that have been passed down for generations.

Traditional architectural practices are still respected and some of the buildings are maintained as cultural exhibitions while others have been transformed. Landhandleriet Café was the office of the hamlet owner himself, Mr. Dahl. The old general store dates to 1905 and has preserved its original interior, taking you back in time from the moment you enter. The Landhandelen Café now occupies all the rooms, but the first room within the store itself was once the office of the "væreier" (fishing village owner). From this vantage point, he had a clear view of the harbour, closely monitoring the arrival of boats laden with fish, while also keeping a meticulous eye on the store's sales activities.

In the old days, Oriana Tavern functioned as a former whiskey cellar – you will still find food and whiskey, as well as rustic pizzas in a comforting environment. At the heart of the resort lies Salteriet, a former fish salt house turned art gallery that displays contemporary works by Nordic painters, ceramicists, sculptors, and all manner of artists and craftsmen. On the ground floor, curated exhibitions of art in all genres are shown. On the second floor you can experience exhibitions in collaboration with The Queen Sonja Print Award.

ACCOMMODATIONS: RORBU OR FISHERMAN’S CABINS

History extends itself to the other accommodations at the resort and is comprised of a total of 26 authentic and rustic fisherman’s cabins or ‘rorbu’ with original timber walls that bring modern and cozy comforts for today’s travelers. In addition to the cabins in town, a truly off-the-grid Isolated Fisherman’s Cabin sits on the island of Strøymøya - created for those who appreciate being in a remote area, with a rugged environment, combined with certain spectacular views along with creature comforts.
