Curriculum Overview Year 1 Autumn 1 Global Warriors

Topic Summary

How can we make the world a better place for all?

Global Warriors encourages children to think about our environment and gain a greater understanding of the world we live in and the challenges we face. The children explore the enquiry question ‘How can we make the world a better place for all?’ Together we will explore how we can repurpose our lifestyles, using our natural curiosity and determination to build a new respect for the environment we live in. Our learning will be focused around ‘the 4 R’s (Recycle - Repurpose - Reuse - Repair).

In the topic we will be teaching the children the following key concepts:

  • Indentity - How do our beliefs help to shape our identity?

English

We will be using these texts as inspiration for our writing, using our knowledge from our daily phonics lessons to segment the words we want to spell before using our sound knowledge to support us writing them. We will focus on writing captions and labels before building our confidence to complete and write sentences. We will learn our sentence rules and develop our handwriting skills.

Throughout the lessons there will continue to be lots of opportunity for listening to books and talking, this will help the children become fully emersed in the texts we use and learn new vocabulary.

Maths

We will begin our year 1 Maths, by looking at developing a strong number sense within 10, looking at counting on and counting back as well as finding one more and one less. We will then begin to look at addition and subtraction within 10, focusing on rapid recall of our number facts as well as seeing the connection between addition and subtraction.

Science

Our focus for Science this half term will be the human body, we will be naming and identifying different parts of the body. Then we will be exploring the 5 senses through a range of different experiments, thinking of which body parts these relate to. We will encourage the children to ask questions, developing their curiosity and enquiry skills.

Geography

We will be looking at human and physical Geography, thinking about what features we have in our school grounds as well as within our local area of Wansbeck Road. After taking a walk, we will create a map of our journey before looking at how Wansbeck Road has changed over the years.

PSHE and RE

In PSHE, we will be looking at how all families are different and the important part different people play in our lives. We look at how we have things in common with each other, as well as differences. Our similarities and differences make us all special within our diverse communities.

In RE, we will look at how Christians express their belonging to their faith. We learn how Christians welcome new people into the church through a baptism ceremony.

Music

In Music, our focus for this half term will be to participate in creating a dramatic group performance. We will start by listening to the ‘Menu Song’ and begin to develop our ability to sing this song from memory. We will also play classroom instruments to accompany this song and compose and devise a dramatic group performance using a range of props.

We will also introduce the children to the first of our musicians. This half term, we focus on music by the band Coldplay and think about how the band are 'global warriors' with their efforts to generate their own power during their concerts.

Art

This half term we will be focussing on sculpture and using the most famous statue in the North East as our inspiration. We will look at the Angel of the North’s artist Anthony Gormley and look at how it was built and constructed before exploring different materials from which they could create a model. Our final piece will be designing and creating a sculpture for our local area.

Computing

We will take our first visit to the computer room, we will look at how to turn on a computer and log on. We will also focus on our digital literacy, thinking about how we can keep ourselves safe whilst using computers. We will also look at why we use passwords and how to create a good strong password.
