5. Coraline
From the twisted mind of Neil Gaiman, Coraline follows a young girl, unhappy in her life, as she discovers a parallel universe that seems almost perfect, except for the buttons sewn onto everyone’s eyes. This movie, surprisingly, is based on a true story (which you can read about here). It includes themes of death, belonging, and family, all executed through amazing art and story. While Coraline is occasionally seen as scary or disturbing, it is beloved amongst those who love allthings spooky.

6. The Shining
Brought to the screen in 1980, this psychological thriller, horror, and mystery movie has become one of the most well known horror flicks. It depicts an author staying in an abandoned hotel with his family as the winter caretaker, as he is slowly driven insane, and eventually, murderous. This movie chooses not to focus as much on jump scares or gore, and relies more on depicting the characters’ psychological deterioration. That, paired with the ongoing feelings of dread and suspense that haunt audiences throughout the duration of the movie, have helped The Shining become one of the scariest horror movies.
