The Baker Blast NOVEMBER 12, 2023

Above:This week, counselors visited Mrs. Burt, Mrs. Seidl, and Mr. Fahnestock's classrooms to lead a lesson with students. They are visiting with all social studies classes during the month of November. Students learned the role of a school counselor, how to connect with their school counselor, the importance of confidentiality, and other school resources.

In addition, counselors shared common trends related to mental health and well-being while demonstrating strategies to achieve a more balance perspective and get help in critical situations. All students were asked to identify at least two trusted adults in their life as having a connection to supportive adults is an important factor in being able to ask for help during difficult times.

Counselors will be meeting individually with students that need assistance identifying trusted adults and students requesting individual appointments.

THANKSGIVING BREAK

Please note that this will be the last Baker Blast before the holiday break.

As we approach the Thanksgiving season, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude and extend my warmest wishes to each and every one of you. It has been a great start to the school year. We are near the end of one of our longest stretches without a break in the calendar. I am truly thankful for the continued positive energy, strength and resilience of our entire school community.

From November 22nd to November 26th, our school will be closed, allowing our students, staff, and families to celebrate this special time with loved ones. Thanksgiving break provides an excellent opportunity to explore new hobbies, delve into personal interests, or engage in community service to give back to those in need. During this break, I encourage you to engage in activities that bring joy and relaxation.

Whether it's spending quality time with family, reconnecting with friends, or simply taking a moment for yourself, let us all embrace the spirit of Thanksgiving and gratitude. I wish you all a restful and rejuvenating Thanksgiving break, filled with love, gratitude, and cherished memories. May this time off provide an opportunity for reflection, rejuvenation, and reconnection, preparing us for the promising return on Monday, November 27th.

With warm regards,

VETERANS DAY

This weekend we celebrated Veterans Day

THE HISTORY OF VETERANS DAY (Information provided by Veterans Affairs, www.va.gov)

World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” – officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

DIWALI: Festival of Lights

Happy Diwali to those of you who are celebrating!

Citation from https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/pages/article/diwali

Diwali, or Dipawali, is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. This festival is as important to Hindus as the Christmas holiday is to Christians. Over the centuries, Diwali has become a national festival that's also enjoyed by non-Hindu communities. Buddhists in India celebrate Diwali as well.
